I have started limiting my purchases to ships that "speak" to me as it were.
Which is still a more inclusive criteria than one would think.

Thus, I really like that I never need to do anything in X-Wing. I repaint a few for fun, then those become my aces among the generics.
Oh yeah, I've been doing this a long time and I grew up in the age of old school Warhammer, I've painted ridiculous quantities of models. When people don't repaint, I totally get it. Not everybody can, and of those who can, not everybody wants to, and that's totally fine. I recognize that my need to repaint is all on me. I love seeing repaints but I don't judge anybody who doesn't. Worst you'll get from me is a gentle encouragement in that direction.
Always remember the golden rule: if you're having fun, you're doing it right.

There are iconic/popular builds and ships I've yet to fly; I've two Aggressors but have never flown them, still haven't flown The Ghost (that might change today) or a Jumpmaster. I tried (pre-FAQ) Emperor and didn't like it, felt "gross".
I tend to be kind of OCD about my play area and setup, how cards are arranged, the order of pilots left to right, where my token box is to my right, how maneuver templates are arranged, etc.
Heh. I have all my surplus target locks and focus and etc etc etc in a box on the shelf. I'll never use them, I know I'll never use them, but still, all my new target locks and focus and etc etc etc go into that same box. Pretty soon I'll probably need a second overflow box.
I have a lot of popular builds I never fly. I play casual and I don't want to play things that feel degenerate. I want to win, but I want to win with builds that are fun and interesting and aren't going to make my opponent question why they're playing this game. I only played the Emperor once pre-FAQ, now that he's fixed I'll probably bring him a lot more often. (That said, the Jumpmaster has a lot of fun and interesting builds that aren't awful. Give it a try. Just maybe avoid Manaroo.)
One blood donation at a time..... just not my blood.
Buying: Only TIEs. And never more of any ship than there are unique pilots for it.
Playing: Unless it's a tournament, I try to limit myself to one Unique pilot. And usually completely avoid movie characters(which, fortunately, basically just means no Vader for me).
Edited by DarthEnderXI'm kind of nuts so my goal with collecting is to have a painted ship to represent every unique pilot in the game (and generics too for small base ships) which means I just picked up my 3rd Ghost and 8th HWK-290 lol
I have a thread detailing what I've had painted so far over in the painting sub forum!
As far as playing, I usually end up doing three player which we do as a sort of draft, where players bid on random ships that come up to a squad max of 60pts with mixed squadrons of all factions.
So definitely kinda weird haha

That sounds like such a fun way to play.
I used to get them all. But now that they are reprinting cards I'm thinking that way of thinking is now flawed. We all get caught up in something only to find it changing and becoming something else. Do what makes you happy and have fun with it
I used to do scum only, but now I started buying some expansions just for upgrades, and thus started flying a bit of all 3 factions. My main idea is to gather enough of a ship to be able to run as many as i want in a list, the only exceptions I Have to that idea right now are I only have 2 houndstooths (houndsteeth?), 1 shadowcaster, 1 firespray, and 3 quadjumpers ( wanna run hugs from thugs, quads x 5 ). I Don't want to gather the max number of ships i could run in 100 pts, but enough that I am willing to run, otherwise I'd have 4 jumpmasters, and 7 M3As
I'm new to the game but I can't see myself buying a lot of stuff ![]()
I have two X-Wings and U-wing, and I'd like to add a 3rd X-Wing. Also A-Wings are my favourite ship so I'd like a group of those next.
After that I might switch to building an Imperial squad, maybe with bombers.
I know this is crazy to say, but I don't like a lot of the ships. I love the ones I love and don't care much for the rest. Weirdly I don't like a lot of the large base ships at all, so far I much prefer a squad of smaller and quicker ships.
I come from games where everything was in units and armies so I still find it hard to accept the idea of flying 3 or 4 completely different things without any theme. I don't think I'll ever go to the winningest lists or anything like that.
I started with a rule of never owning all the ships in the game, because I knew if I ever had a complete collection I would have to keep it complete by buying everything. Then the plastic-crack addiction hit...
I held out on buying an E-Wing (the last non-epic ship I didn't own) for a long time. Then I won a Corran Horn alt-art and caved in and bought one. Now I technically still satisfy my rule because I don't have a Corvette, but I'm not fooling anyone (especially myself).
For list-building, I hardly ever play Rebel for an odd reason: Rebel v Rebel battles seem weird to me thematically so I avoid playing them so it doesn't happen in my games. Imperial v Imperial, sure (coups, power struggles, defections). Scum v Scum, easy (turf wars, betrayals, etc). But I find it hard to imagine why Rebels are killing each other.
I go for the taste, those X-Wings and Tie-Interceptors are really delicious ![]()
No i just buy what I like for all factions, i don't care if it is original, prequel, new or comic/video game stuff if I like it i buy it once or twice.
Personally going in small, starting with a Rebel/Empire core for casual play, then I'll throw in a base scum faction. Overall plan to go for the unique ships I like the style of so I imagine I'll have only a handful of ties, and a ton of rebel and Scum in the long term. Then again, I'd prefer the YT-2400 over the Falcon, XD. and the HWK-290 and Arc-170 over the A-wing and B-wing. But I imagine I'll wind up with quite a few singles, and I can stick to the ships I like. Can't wait for the Scurrg.
I only buy rebel and Scum ships
I only use official ffg tokens
I do not fly disney canon ships or uniques
In the past I've been buying enough for Imperial and Rebellion Epic squads. Plus I used to get at least two if each small S&V with one Large.
Until recently I refused to buy any of The Force Awakens ships. I wanted all my ships to be "galactic civil war" relevant ships. But then the quad jumper came out... and I bought one. Then I saw a bunch of videos with the upsilon and TIE F/O and TIE special forces.... and then a Rey falcon paired with a Jan Ors hawk destroying people... so I broke down and bought all the force awakens ships shortly after lol
I like to have at least 2 of each small ship as well usually more though depending on the model. The only large ship I have two of is the Aggressor for running bro bots and of course the old / new falcon.
Edited by Phoenix5454I have different buying habits depending on my thematic interpretation of ships/factions.
Rebels I just buy whatever looks interesting, and, being a motley group of freedom fighters, I'm just fine with flying squadrons in which there are no two ships alike.
For the Empire, and scum for that matter, I tend to buy one each of those things which I see as "command ships"; that is, pretty much any large ship (with the exception of the IG-2000, which runs best in pairs), as well as certain ships that seem thematically like they should be fewer in number. TIE Adv. Prototype, Starviper, Special Forces TIE, etc. A lot of the other small ships I like to have in at least pairs, so that I can feel visually satisfied with a pair of matching escorts, though larger numbers can be fun too. 3 Defenders, 3-4 Protectorates, that sort of thing.
Simply put, my buying is guided by what I want to see on my game table.
I get one of each, 2 if it is supposed to be a cheap ship that is better flown in pairs. But lately since I have plenty of ships one of each seems to fit my style better. Can't do too many crazy gimick lists as some of those require 4 ships but can still do quite a number of them.
