Shooting at ships when Heavy is engaged by Heavy

By Tvboy, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

Hi, so I played in my first tournament today (well, first in a couple of years) and a really great time, but there was a situation where I had an x-wing and Jan next to an opponents ship which were both engaged by a TIE Defender, then a Jumpmaster moved up to engage both of my squadrons, and because we all now had Heavy via Intel it was ruled by both the TO and a very well known player that my squadrons, including Jan, couldn't shoot at his ship anymore because they were engaged.

Not sure if this was correct because of the wording on Heavy, and I didn't want to drag out the discussion since I'm still new and just attacked his squadrons. Would like to know for the future since Intel is an important part of my fleets bomber strategy so I can ignore their fighters and attack their ships.

Normally, Engagement means:

1) You cannot Move.

2) You cannot shoot ships.

However, heavy removes that Restriction

And Jan makes every enemy within Distance 1 of her Heavy

Shoot ships.

The ONLY time it screws you up, is when the enemy is able to move into a position where they Engage your bombers , but at the same time, are not within Distance 1 of Jan.

But even then, all you need to do is then move Jan, because Jan cannot be locked down by Squadron Engagement... The only thing that specifically stops an Intel equipped ship from Moving... Is Instigator .

Okay, so I was right then that Heavy Fighters can't stop my fighters from shooting at ships, even if my fighters are also heavy?

And Jan should never be stopped from shooting at ships by other fighters right?

Correct.

All Heavy on YOUR fighters does, is allow the enemy to Move and Shoot Ships if they wish.

And correct with Jan. Jan will always be engaged by Heavy Fighters, as as soon as they engage her, they are heavy... Even if She is engaged with Fighters and instigator, she is able to shoot at ships (by the FAQ). But Instigator will stop her from moving.

While we are on the topic let me insert a stupid question I've had answered a dozen times and still don't know which way it is, what if the heavy squad has escort?

Escort's wording:

"Squadrons you are engaged with cannot attack squadrons that lack escort unless performing a counter attack."

So a heavy xwing still keeps you from shooting at Jan (heavy squadrons still engage, that is relevant for escort and grit). But you can still shoot at the ship, ignoring Jan and the xwing.

Exactly..

Escort only comes into it when you answer "Squadrons" to the question "Are you going to Attack Squadrons or Ships?"

IF you shoot at Squadrons, you must prioritise an Escort Squadron that is Engaging you.

If you're shooting at Ships, because you or your buddy next toyou is Intel and all of the enemies have Heavy, Escort or not, then Whatever. Escort does not kick in unless you say "Ima Shoot me Some Squadrons!"
