Mediocrity at Hoth

By FourDogsInaHorseSuit, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So this weekend I went to the Hoth system open and went 3-4, with the following list :

ARC-170: · Braylen Stramm (25)
· R2-D6 (1)
Operations Specialist (3)
Alliance Overhaul (0)
· Swarm Leader (3)
A-Wing: Green Squadron Pilot (19)
Juke (2)
Chardaan Refit (-2)
Autothrusters (2)
A-Wing Test Pilot (0)
Snap Shot (2)
A-Wing: Green Squadron Pilot (19)
Juke (2)
Chardaan Refit (-2)
Autothrusters (2)
A-Wing Test Pilot (0)
Snap Shot (2)
A-Wing: Green Squadron Pilot (19)
Juke (2)
Chardaan Refit (-2)
A-Wing Test Pilot (0)
Snap Shot (2)
-- TOTAL ------- 99p. --

I really liked how these defensive a wings preformed with auto thrusters and home, but the problem is they have no offense. The Arc hits like a truck and with two firing arcs you can usually get a good shot in, but with just one agility it melts really fast.

I really want to put auto thrusters on that third green squadron pilot, but I also don't want to lose the synergy of both operations specialist and swarm leader. (With the added perk of am ept at ps 3 allows for full use of swarm leader and Juke.)

So what do you all think? How can I have my cake and eat it too?

A-Wings are fun, but for competition they just don't have the offence.

Some thoughts:

  • The ARC-170 is good but Op Specialist isn't that useful IMHO. I'd turn it into a StressBot with R3A2 and Rear Gunner. Does Braelyn have an EPT???? Don't think so... it would have been illegal with it???
  • A-Wing juke is good in theory, but the 2 red offence will reduce the squads potency. I'd think about trading out at least one of them for a proket Jake (VI + PTL + GC/AT) - you need prokets for better damage out put.

If you love A-Wings you may be better going with a 5 wing Snap Shot/Crack swarm. That's a thing, but not sure if top tier.

I'd say maybe go three ship build and have one named A-Wing, an ARC-170 StreeBot and a plus one - maybe K-Wing. U-Wing is a good blocker.

Something I threw together: http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/?f=Rebel Alliance&d=v4!s!207:-1,184,69:41:26:;86:27,73:7:25:U.18;234:-1,161,-1,75,198:47:-1:&sn=Awing plus plus

Mike, the R2-D6 gives a pilot with pilot skill over 2 an EPT slot so yes it works as the OP built it.

OP

Mike is correct though. There isn't enough output form the A-wings, to assist the Arc with surviving long enough reliabily. The interesting thing about the ARCs is they want wingmen who synergies work with their own abilities. The A-wings lack a bit in that department. However if you have fun that's all that mattered.

I think your 3 a wings with juke is just fine, but shave it down to crack shot and do norra, who can be surprisingly defensive and still hit like a truck

A-Wing: Green Squadron Pilot (19)

Crack Shot (1)

Chardaan Refit (-2)

A-Wing Test Pilot (0)

ARC-170: · Norra Wexley (29)

Push The Limit (3)

· C-3PO (3)

Or replace norra with a Lothal Rebel with autoblaster hera fire control and chopper. Also hits like a truck and for sure takes effort to kill

Thanks - yeah just noticed that.

There is synergy with the wingman though. Juke synergies with swarm leader + equal or less pilot skill

Also snapshot with operations specialist. They effectively get a free push the limit by focusing and evading every time against high agility ships.

If you want to run the a-wings with a swarm leader ship then the best option I have found is 3 GSP with PTL and Juke along with Jess Pava. All PS3, Jess gets rerolls from the neighbouring GSPs and she can attack after the a-wings so they get the benefit of Juke. You could also run with Juke and Snap Shot a-wings as well but I just prefer the PTL/Juke so I have the focus or TL for a bit of attacking mod
