So what if the evade token worked at all ranges?

Now again, core mechanic and as of now I am certain that the evade token is good enough. But I was thinking what if the ranges for evader were changed too

  • close range: reroll 1 attack die
  • mid range: cancel 1 attack die
  • long range: reroll and/or cancel 1 attack die

Now I can see why this wasn't done as many ships have only a single red in their firing arc and shooting at smaller ships with evade that also had red dice would be futile. But what if say those ships with evade only had black and blue dice (sort of like the Raider).

anyways what brought this up was that I realized none of the squadrons had evade tokens (for obvious reasons). But again this won't be happening unless there was Armada 2.0 so what are your thoughts on it?

Yeah, I was also considering how would it be if instead of just a straight up hit points squadrons had a single defense token to spend. (Such as TIE Fighter's have Evade and X-wing has Brace).

To address the squadron point specifically though--it would be cool to have a "soft" defense like that on a unique squadron... A close range reroll like a Mothma evade. I don't see them adding a unique token to the game just for that, but could see an ace with an evade or two and Mothma's text as a special ability, maybe. I like it.

In fact... That's what cloak should've been. Instead of in defense token form, you just always get to reroll one die when defending.

perhaps it moreso needs to be written as:

close: reroll one dice from a squadron attack

medium: reroll a dice from a ship

long: cancel a dice from a ship

mon mothma could be buffed to do exactly as she does now but also canceling the squadron dice at close which could put her to more use when compared to reeikan who often overshadows her at defence

I'm just trying to imagine how the AFM II evades the squadron attacks at close range. Jump - jump - jump - little Frigate!

Hello! Did you want to bomb that frigate? Attack those squadrons? Do you need to take out a key enemy ship or your entire fleet is effectively finished in the course of a single turn?
