General gripe about game stuff..RPG coins...wtf

By Velvetelvis, in X-Wing Off-Topic

I have been trying to find metal coins to use for RPG games. supposedly their are several places that make them.

the best ones are in England , shipping them here(America) looks challenging.

the American ones are generally terrible or the companies that make them were in kickstarter mode years ago and the website still shows them in `pre order` status.

Why are stupid fake coins so hard to get? UUUGGGHHHH

You mean like fantasy currency? Draw some elf ears on George Washington.

I've generally found a lot of them at cons, but when I look online for them they always seem so much more expensive.

I refuse to use the plastic coins in talisman. I must find good coins

Have you considered ceramic coins (similar to poker chips)?

Never heard of them! Curious indeed. Going to nose around .

Thankyou!

A short google search found me these:

Top link looks the most promising, bottom link was once a kickstarted project, now in full production: they even have metal credits for sci-fi!

Here's a Tavern Starter from the top link for $39.99

And here's what seems to be the best bang for your buck:

55 fairly shiny coins for $25.00.

Also I wouldn't worry too much about mixing coins that don't match. Medieval coins were all about the value in the metal of the coin, from what I understand it was common to trade in currencies from many different ares, and even chop the coins into slivers if there wasn't change - pieces of eight and all that. Merchants used touchstones and scales to measure the purity and weight of the valuable metal; they seldom cared where it was minted it unless it was simple copper, or the coin was for some reason more valuable than its weight in gold.

You could make for a realistic mix by tossing in rpg coins from different sets, cheaper ones, more expensive ones, etc - let your adventurers sort them themselves. Heck you could even haggle with the players over prices for nice gear if you like. ;)

I think a mix would be best. I'm still on my mission.

Found another place online that seems to have ffg syndrome.... Everything I want is out of stock.

It's a curse I tell yah!

Problems have interesting ways of solving themselves.

So, I went to get coffee.and had a wild idea to swing into an actual coin store and see if they had any leads.

The fella said.."well no nothing like that. But...Why not use real coins?" And points me to a giant bucket of foreign coins...Many of which are gold colored...All of which are exotic and to me have a perfect fantasy vibe. They are all different sizes and patterns.

And ....4 for a dollar.

I'm stoked to go home and do all of the frowned upon coin cleaning methods and see if they shine up just a bit.

If anyone else wants coins to up the quality of your game components Definetly look into a coin shop.

Bonus to the story...He had giant coins with star wars characters on them. Bought all of them to give away on game days.

If you want sets of cool fantasy-looking coins the Scythe boardgame has some. It's not worth buying the game just for the coins, but you can buy them separately, and it's worth buying the game anyway because it's a great game.
