Opportunist Vs. Expertise (Token Theft)

By Epixca, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I'm flying Token Theft, for those of you who don't know what that is, it is Palob, Kavil, and usually Guri. If I give Kavil Opportunist, he will roll 5 dice with Blaster Turret; if I give him Expertise, he won't have to stress himself, will have focuses for the attack, and will only roll 4 dice. Which one is the better option? I'm leaning towards Opportunist, because it goes well with Palob, but now I'm just not sure.

I wouldn't rely on Palob being able to steal all of an opponent's tokens; Expertise for me is the more reliable on the first shooter of the round.

But really, it's very tough not to just use Mindlink in Scum lists at the moment.

Yeah, with both Palob and Guri in the list, mindlink seems like a really strong option.

I would use expertise! I assume you will have the title to hang on to a few focus for Defense and firing the Blaster turret and thus I would prefer not to ever use a focus to modify an attack. Just my opinion

Also, don't touch Blaster Turret with a barge pole it's terrible. Twin Laser Turret all over.

Having faced Opportunist Blaster Turret Palob, I'd go with Blaster Turret on Kavil. But that focus requirement could get you, so watch it. Dorsal Turret is cheaper, and may be a more reliable alternative. It's still 4 dice at range 2, which is plenty scary.

Actually, on second thought I'd choose Expertise if you take Blaster Turret because dice mods > more dice. Honestly, you should give Dorsal Turret a try.

So you are saying Dorsal + Expertise. Sounds cool. I love Blaster Turret on Kavil for this reason: Spend focus, R4 gives TL, fire with 4 dice, maybe a 5th with Opportunist. You know. But you seem like a respectable person, so Expertise is the way to go?

Blaster Turret and R4 Aggromech no longer work together like that. Blaster Turret has you spend the focus token before there is a defender so there is not yet a target on which to acquire a target lock with R4.

Sadly that combo was an early casualty of attempts by ffg's FAQ crew to soft nerf triple U-boats last year.

However! I would like to note that if you are non-tournament and your opponent does not object then there is no reason to stop using the old Aggro+Blaster Kavil combo in casual games :)

Actually, I think Opportunist + Dorsal Turret is the way to go. Kavil gets 3 dice at range 2, and keeps his focus for offense. Opportunist gets him 4 dice at range 2, 5 at range 1 (outside of arc), which is pretty awesome for a 3-point turret. Eat your heart out, TLT!
