Why you never fly fortress (unless you really want to lose)

By Marinealver, in X-Wing Battle Reports

So here is something I wanted to try out as something that could be neat and gimmicky but was too afraid as all those that did so WERE FOREVER SHUNNED BY THE X-WING COMMUNITY FOR COMMITTING HERESY, but with everything changing and I am no where near going to any competitive regional or tournament event, I tried this build in X-wing night. So go ahead and hate me, it would be good practice if i ever decide to go into a career of politics.

  • Lando Calrissian
    • Expertise
    • Gunner
    • C-3PO
    • Smuggling Compartment
    • Tactical Jammer
    • Inertia Dampeners
  • Warden Squadron Pilot
    • Extra Munitions
    • Twin Laser Turret
    • Cluster mines
    • Proximity Mines
    • Bombardier
    • Experimental Interface

100 points.

My opponent was flying Rey/w Finn & Kennan and a pair Snap-Juke Greens

So my idea was to fly in a corner and surround myself with mines using Lando EI and Bombardier. Just to see how it works. The plan was to deploy cluster mines then EI to Bombider a Proximity mine in front of it. Naturally I let my opponent know ahead of time about this shenanigans so he knew want to expect so I didn't tick off any players with cheesy tactics.

any attack on this station would be a futile gesture

My opponent deployed straight across from me having been warned about my intentions to fortress. I deployed with the K-win about 2 bases and flush with the YT-1300 which was in the corner. My first move was a 2 hard right and drop a cluster mine. Lando hit the inertial dampeners In hindsight I could have EI and bombider a proximity in front of the Cluster mines, but that would stress me out and I thought my opponent was going to make a b-line straight at me and I wanted to have my fort up by turn 2 instead of turn 3. So doubling my efforts I didn't take the stress so i could hard 2 and finish construction.

However my opponent instead went all the way around the rocks and debris clouds I placed as a to sort of funnel them in. The K-wing bumped into lando with the Hard 2 right, Lando did a green 1 straight which couldn't clear the K-wing as I have foreseen but cleared the stress and pass a free action to the K-wing, which deployed Cluster mines EI then deployed proximity mine in front of it with bombideer. My opponent still worked his way around the table to hit a gap between the table edge and the first set of cluster mines. He also noticed that the K-wing was too close to the board edge, and that once the Falcon moves or is destroyed the K-wing will fly off the edge.

begin your attack run

So the pair Snap juke -Awing get into the trench but my opponent wasn't exactly able to get Rey in there as well. Once an A-wing was in range he took a pot shot at lando and still land a hit. K-wing was out of range for TLT. Rey was able to knock off the rest of the shields. The Snap Jukes got in close and as predicted Lando moved and the shields were obliterated by snap shots. Lando was able to fire back and got only 2 hits (through expertise). The A-wing spent an evade to cancel all hits triggering gunner which made 3 hits, and one was evaded. Rey who was also closed in dealt several hits to Lando. Another turn, another shot of snap juke with the A-wings actually inside the line of cluster mines and Rey just in front of it (my mistake of not deploying a proximity mine the first turn shown) dealing Lando a Stunned Pilot crit, the one crit to destroy all fortresses. Still Lando was destroyed before the crit took effect by the A-wings, the K-wing got revenge on one of the A-wings with TLT. Next turn of maneuvers, warden squadron pilot flew off the board.

So looking back, I should have deployed both mines turn one, then turn two work on bumping to make the fortress operational, turn 3 double deploy the last set of mines, turn 4 Battle station fully operational and my accession to Sith Lord complete. Also I should have deployed the K-wing up to Range 1 so that I would have had room to hard move and not end up off the table edge. Still with all the upgrades that take the pain from overlapping or stressing yourself out, we have both determined that Fortress Builds still will not work, especially with a meta that is so damage heavy.

So how do you like me now?;)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but why would they attack you ? final salvo you have 5 dice and they have 7.

Unless you have at least 10+ in final salvo or at least are rolling more dice I don't see the point in fortressing

Good point, but we also wanted to see how this will work out. Yeah in a tournament this list will probably never be attacked and will lose to final salvo every time.

So another reason why you should NOT fortress.

If I remember correctly, according to the rules reference a ship can only drop 1 bomb per round.

You have one K-Wing and the Falcon has no bombs. You can only "drop" one bomb/mine per turn no matter how many opportunities you may get.

Ah, so it would have taken 3 turns anyways to set up and I couldn't have set up the first two.

I thought you could do the same action as long as it wasn't the same upgrade card, but yeah you cannot drop a bomb and a mine. Although if FFG is worried about balance they could reverse that on an FAQ. The Firespray could use all the help it can get.
