How many resources?

By LetsGoRed, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

I enjoyed the thread that asked how many characters people run, but for me I tend to find myself at about 28-32 in just about every deck I build and that hasn't really changed from when I started playing a couple years ago. What has changed in my decks, but I'm not sure for the better, is the number of resource type locations (either resource providers or reducers) I run. When I started, the FFG new player guidelines recommended 15 in a 60 card deck I think I pretty much always hovered around that (maybe dipping down to 12-13 but offsetting it with recruiters or gold providing characters) in most of my CCG decks. Over the course of the LCG era, I've seen the number of resource type locations in my decks drift down, often to around 10 or so and, in turn, I've put more of an emphasis on gold when weighing a plot's merits. However, I'm not sure this shift has been for the better. I'm curious what other people see as the resource "sweet spot" and, for the older players, if there have been changes in their philosophy about this b/w CCG and LCG.

Like always, i think it´s necessary to discuss the basic stuff first. - So, what´s a resource ? -

I think most players will agree that a location that provides +x gold is considered a resource, but do we consider cards like lannisport steward as a charachter a resource or both of them? And what about the summer raven or an event like support of the kingdom. And would you consider a one time card effect like summer sea as a resource, or even more difficult are cards like a fistful of coppers, which does nothing else than to transfer the income of one round to another round. And last, are "cards" considered to be resources, in other words is card draw rateable as a ressource?

If it breaks down to how many either +x gold locations and reducer locations you run, i´m usually running 11-12.

I still pretty much run all three seas in my decks as they are just too useful not to include. I also like to include 2of the fiefdoms, the 0 cost gold locations are the "reduce a character by 2" location. There are few cards that provide 2+ resources, but I add those when they are available. But I try to keep the total number of "resources" at 10 or so, though character based resources serve two functions, and thus can add to that total.

I would prefer to run 12 -15 resource locations, as suggested by the generic how-to manual. However, I can never find more than 12 resources that I want to run, sometimes it is closer to 10. I wonder if this is due to a smaller resource pool in LCG? Also, the fact that the Greyjoy starter only has one copy of each locations means my Greyjoy decks run less resources than any other house...

On most of my decks i run ussualy 1 Chamber, 3 seas, 3 fiefdoms, 3 crossroads, 3 basic 0-cost +1 locations = total of 13 income locations. Sometimes it varies by deck cause in Shadow decks I run also Kingdom of Shadows and sometimes I throw in some of the one per deck reducers. Also it varies if I have deck focused more in neutrals or if I need more influance. But mostly it is 12-15 locations.

Also have to agree with jmccarthy that in my Greyjoy deck I run less locations since I have KotS only twice so I have one less fiefdom, and 0-cost +1.

In most of my decks I run the seas (3x), chambers (x1), 0 cost gold producers (x3), fiefdoms (x3), the 2 gold cost, 2 gold reducer for characters (x1), and between 1-3 crossroads (depending on the deck). So, it looks like I normally run 12-15 resource locations in my deck. In Lannister, I will also have some gold producing characters in the deck, so they will have a bit more gold than my other houses.
