2nd Best TIE

By Darth Meanie, in X-Wing

So, I've been flying the Defender awhile, so that I can win a couple of games now and again. I am thinking it is time to set it aside, in favor of something else. Given that I play Epic, and Squints are Eyeballs are likely doomed, so what is my next best choice if TIE to build 4-6 to a list? I'm leaning towards TAPs or TIE/sfs.

What does the hive mind say?

TIE/SFs are a great way to get 3 reds + 6 HP + FCS into lists, and they're great fun. Especially if you line up the dream shot of having 1 ship in both arcs at range 1!

I came into this thinking you were only looking for the second-best TIE Fighter pilot (as the best is clearly Wampa).

In which case, your answer is Night Beast with Mk 2 engines.

Since you're talking Epic, I'm thinking you should give the Advanced another go. Maarek in particular can murderize epic ships.

Epic?

A Gonzati carrying 4 squints is a lot of fun.

TIE Advanced with AC and TIE/Sf are the most meaty from the spammable ones.

For Epic specifically, Advanced TIEs with Accuracy Corrector and Cluster Missiles would be my choice of non-Defender spam ship. Failing that, why not go with the classic TIE Fighter? Especially when you can throw in so many truly mean pilots with plenty of generics for cover.

Sometimes we play 300 points sans Huge ships. But Maarek could be on of my "heroes." Otherwise, I fly squads of generics cuz too many pilots with special abilities in a list will then get forgotten in the heat of battle.

The question I have is what are you looking for them to do with your other ships, and how many are you looking for?

A mass of Strikers with Crackshot would be good for taking care of enemy fighters due to sheer output of attack dice.

5x TAPs with your choice of missiles is pretty hilarious. You can run them all with Prockets and chips for 100. I've done that in regular 100/6 games and had the great pleasure of murderkilling a Decimator in a single turn, but epic would let you at least run a bunch of them with Concs and chips. Heck, you could run Barons and be a proper nuisance.

I also ran some TIE Bombers and you can delete sections of Epic ships in one turn that way.

What Epic ship(s) do you normally use and how do you run it

6x TIE Bombers with Lightweight Frame, Shuttle title, Tactician, and a smattering of Fleet Officers and Operations Specialists. Make them Gamma Vets and chuck in PTL for the giggles.

It's not the best list you'll make, but it'll confuse the hell out of your opponent, and you can be **** sure at least one over-invested ace isn't getting an action for the rest of the game.

Hahahahaha, awesome.

Generally, I want them to be the dogfighters of the list. I will run support ships (shuttles) or specialized ships (bombers) to complement them. I generally have them compose about 1/2 of my list (i.e., 150 pts of ships).

If I may use a WWII analogy, I'm looking for my P-51 escort.

clearly the only option is 12 academy pilots ;)

If the /ln is your P51, the /fo is your P51B. Get yourself a Merlin engine and start shifting.

Of course, that probably means the /sf is the P51D, and that's clearly the beast...

If you're playing Epic, get those TIE Bombers out . Loaded for bear with Proton Torps and extra munitions. Make big things go boom.

TIE Special Forces! A Quickdraw / Backdraft list would be awesome. Then fill the other 4 slots with Pilots like Zeta Leader and Omega Leader etc. Go Full on first order and run an Upsilon shuttle too!

Im not sure of the synergy but a challenge is always fun and if you're setting aside the defenders you obviously want to be challenged more. Show them the dark side with your First Order ships! Bring down the Republic! :P

Definitely an SF, it can take Hyperwave Comms which is actually kinda useful in Epic!

I was just looking at TAPS again today, The Inquisitor is really strong for 25 points and can fit within your idea. (TIE to build 4-6 to a list)

I'm a big fan of the TAP, I've been flying the Inquisitor pretty much non-stop since his release but in a post-Kylo world I think he's going to have to take a bit of a leave of absence.

It is still harder than you think to make ordnance work sometimes. . .but they make great secondary ships!

TIE Bomber

Scimitar Squadron Pilot, Homing Missiles, Extra Munitions, Long-Range Scanners (23 points)

This loadout is cheap enough to fit into a 5-6 ship list. Just adding one is fine. You can always get one missile off. Extra Munitions keeps it a threat so your opponent has to keep shooting at it. If they don't, you get to shoot the second missile and the ship becomes a 23 point U-boat to give some perspective.

The strikers with lightweight frame can take a few hits, and can lay down some serious red dice in groups. You can fit several in a list too.

Yup I was also going to suggest the Tie Strikers they have surprising good maneuverability with adaptive ailerons.
