This game could have been better if it stopped at Wave 2

I was thinking about this last night. What if every new ship that came out also came with a bonus 2 pilot cards for a previous ship of the same faction to help keep them caught up. Some examples:

Lancer with 2 Firespray Cards

Tie FO with 2 Basic Tie cards

T-70 with 2 T-65 cards

They do, sometimes.

Guidance chip was for other ships rather than TAP, as autothrusters and several other cards, also improvements for a different ship than the released one.

Actually my idea was new pilot cards included, but started a separate thread for it :)

Being a huge SotE fan, I'd say stop after wave 5.

+Gunboat ofc ;)

I'd be interested in knowing what a meta limited to Wave 3 ships would look like (all upgrades available, just limited to the ships from Waves 1-3). Fat Han would be a big deal, I imagine - the Han/Jake list from Top 4 of Worlds would take some beating.

I can imagine adding the Rebel & Imperial stuff from Wave 8 to that, but it's pretty much spot on that you could draw a line under Wave 3 ships and I'd be pretty happy.

This is ridiculous.

C'mon, is an obvious troll thread, but... Who cares, it could be fun anyway.

This is Shadow345's weekly steaming pile.

Vader, Soontir, Palpshuttle

4 x TLT Y

The game would be dead by now if it stopped at wave 2. People can only play the same few lists for so long before getting bored and moving on

I never would have played it.

As a scum player, I definitely have to disagree with the premise of the OP.

Later releases made the theme feel too diluted.

Future expansions should have just been upgrades and pilots.

Considering that I play only scum, it has to be..."interesting", for me -_-

Just to wave two might have worked if it had been supplied with a good variety of scenerios and campaigns, but there would still be troublesome combos and the absence of fan favorite characters and ships would have limited the player base.

If we broaden the premise of this thread to "there should only be canon ships in this game," you'd really only need to drop 10 ships from the game (12, counting upcoming releases):

E-Wing
TIE Phantom
StarViper
M-3A Interceptor
IG-2000 Aggressor
Kihraxz
K-Wing
TIE Punisher
G-1A Mist Hunter
JumpMaster 5000
Scurrg H-6 Bomber
TIE Aggressor

Counting the upcoming Auzituck Gunship, 20 of the ships — plus all five epic-only huge ships — released since Wave 3 are canon. That's not too bad, really.

If we'd only gotten canon ships, we could imagine the waves looking something like this (taking some liberties with release timings not quite lining up they way they did in real life):

WAVE 4
Z-95 Headhunter
TIE Defender
YT-2400
VT-49 Decimator

WAVE 5
Most Wanted
Hound's Tooth

WAVE 6
The Force Awakens Core Set
T-70 X-Wing
TIE/FO Fighter

WAVE 7
VCX-100 Ghost (with Attack Shuttle)
TIE Adv. Prototype
Protectorate Starfighter

WAVE 8
ARC-170
Special Forces TIE
Shadow Caster

WAVE 9
Sabine's TIE Fighter
Upsilon Shuttle
Quadjumper

WAVE 10
Auzituck Gunship
U-Wing
TIE Striker

Scum & Villainy would be woefully underrepresented, though. It takes the biggest hit by removing Legends-only ships: 8 Scum ships to 15 Rebel ships and 13 Imperial ships would exist in the game, not counting huge ships.

In case you guys haven't noticed...

Shadow345 posts a blatant troll topic like this about once a month.

But I kinda agree here except that he stopped one wave too early.

Fat Han ruling the meta?!?!?!

You would have been better off stopping at core:P

That's what's great about the distribution model -- you just buy what you want! Do you want to play with Episode IV trench run ships forever? Only buy and play with those! You decide the games you want with the purchases you want! It's fantastic!

Actually, he has a good point. Wave3 was one of the better points in the early game. I was gonna say I wish there was the Transport, but then you'd have to add the other epic: Cr90. And C3PO.

Also, the transport added mostly EU pilots, and really its the OT stuff I like the most.

We should make a fantasy Wave3 variant of Xwing! =)

You can add the Transport, it came out a month before the CR-90. And it had Jek, Wes and Hobbie! Those are all Episode 4 X-Wing pilots, IIRC.

Disagree. I can certainly see the strain that the more rapid release schedule has put on playtesting but there is not a single ship I wish I didn't have, but then I play and love playing Epic.

Not to be a downer, but the new stuff tends to be just slightly more competitive, efficient.

Just for kicks: What Wave3 and below ships are still in contention for tier1 meta at this moment? Tier2?

I'd argue Ywing with TLT and or Stressbot style cuz Paul Heaver takes it.
Biggs in T-65

T2:
Bwing - in the mass rebel and control variants
Awings?? - some has to help me here.
Soontir and Carnor are used, and should be good in the meta again.

Not in contention:

Lambda got wiped out by Palp nerf, Commonwealth and Palp Aces aren't taken anymore.
Firespray - total dud
Falcon - although used, not heard of much.
Tie fighter - finally got power creeped.
Vader - hasn't been used recently. (Though I think he could be T2)
Tie Bomber - not relevantly used in competitive play so far.

That's actually not as bad as I thought.

Very true. I was not assuming you would be playing at a game store but with like-minded friends at home. If you thought the game should have stopped at wave 2 and you went to a store, you would have to play against all the new stuff you don't like and wouldn't be able to play with your own restrictions.
