This game could have been better if it stopped at Wave 2

Very true. I was not assuming you would be playing at a game store but with like-minded friends at home. If you thought the game should have stopped at wave 2 and you went to a store, you would have to play against all the new stuff you don't like and wouldn't be able to play with your own restrictions.

And my prev list is including heavy proxying. If you're running say tie advanced without raider fix. you're in for a bad day. Trust me I tried.

Bombers will make a comeback with wave 11, perhaps Tomax Bren w unguided, lwf and crackshot. also Deathfire.

Bwing is obsolete, sadly.

Xwing has Biggs and tier 2 Wes.

Vader is at least tier 2. Try him with prockets. Hits like a truck.

Falcon with rey and finn is played and in a good place. Kills certain lists.

Lambda Palp is still ok, just not op anymore. But defenders too got nerfed, thats why commonwealth in total rather disappeared.

Summing up: who cares about the meta? Long live Porkins!

As a potentially useful thought experiment. If a store ran an event that allowed any and all upgrade cards but only ships from wave 1-3, would you be interested? Would there be anything that could compete with a well-flown TIE swarm?

Wave three ships with Chaardan, Tie/X1, Integrated Astro, BTL-A4 etc. sounds like a whole lot of fun to me. BUT, Fat Han and Tie Swarm are probably the only truly competitive lists.

This is the only type of tournament I'd be interested in!

Wave 1-3 with Outrider replacing HWK (sorry Kyle).

next wave should have been scum intro with the rest of the Bounty ships: Hounds Tooth, IGGY, Punishing Seat and Misty, with Most wanted as the aces style pack that introduced the Z-95.

Wave 5 would have started the 5-6 ship waves.

E-wing

HWK (scum and Reb)

Phantom TIE

TIE Defender

Starviper

Khyraxz

Wave 6: Rebels and SWG

Ghost with Attack shuttle

Wookiee Gunship

Decimator

TAP

Lancer

Scyk

wave 7: TFA

T-70

HOTR

Batwing Upsilon

FO

SF

Quadjumpah

Wave 8: More rebels and R1

u-wing

Stolen TIE

*TRN Transport*

TIE Striker

*Guri's Stinger*

Fang Fighter

Wave 9:

ARC

Z-95

TIE Aggressor

TIE Punisher

Skuurg

And so on, with aces packs and Epic boxes sprinkled throughout. I guess the K-wing would have to be in there somewhere, but not before the Missile Boat. And of course GUNBOAT needs its on aces style box with 4 models all painted with different schemes, the classic red stripes, basic gray, blue stripes and albino space cow white. This ultimate gift box will be the first thing after wave 3 and will also be released with all 4 color schemes in individual packs.

oh and Hammerhead Corvettes, Star Jewel, Marauder Corvette, Dornian Gunship, IPV patrol ship, Skipray Blast boat, ect...

Fixed that for you.

Excellent players are what makes this type of game great...

^_^

I started in Wave 3, and I think that was my favourite era to play too. This said: It was wave IV and the Big ships that even piqued my interest to get the wave 3 stuff so... that.

You can always play games based on time periods.

Early Rebellion (A New Hope)

  • X-wings
  • Y-wings
  • U-Wings
  • A-wings
  • HWK-290
  • Falcon
  • VCX-100
  • Attack Shuttle
  • Z-95
  • Tie Fighter
  • Tie Bomber
  • Tie Advanced
  • Tie Advanced Prototype
  • Labmda
  • Tie Striker
  • Firespray

Late Rebellion (Return of the Jedi)

  • X-wings
  • B-wings
  • Y-wings
  • HWK-290
  • YT-1300
  • YT-2400
  • A-wing
  • ARC-170
  • K-wings
  • Tie Fighter
  • Tie Bomber
  • Tie Advanced
  • Lambda
  • Tie Striker
  • Tie Defender
  • Tie Phantom
  • Tie Punisher
  • VT-49
  • Tie Interceptor
  • Firespray

What would be better if FFG had a system where the older ships could be easily updated, rather than the well too bad SoB's, we have already printed it so we wont change it now system that we have. There are a lot of older wave ships that could be tweaked and made up to scratch, but we have crazy power creep where as the older ships are dust collectors in our nerd room, never to see the light of day until a Veterans or Aces pack is released.

I'm not a fan of the new rules and cards. It's just becoming to complicated.

It does seem interesting that the new wave seems to be poised to throw out some efficient generic spam lists. I think QuAudzituck Gunships and 5 Scimitars with Lightweight Frame and Unending Rockets look pretty potent. Have to wait and see.

I'm just NOT about to run out and buy 5 copies of the Aggressor and 3 more Tie Bomber Expansions to be able to play it. The missing generics in the Imperial Aces/Veterans packs is infuriating. I have four Tie Bombers but only 2 Scimitars... C'mon!

New versions of old cards. I mean - we already have power creep, what's the harm in doing that with the same names? A Battle of Yavin box with an X-Wing and a Y-Wing, with cards that are balanced against the current meta? I don't see what the problem would be. It couldn't be that these ships would be identifiably better than the ships in the, still available, old core set. This is already the case. The ships from expansions are better, just compare the Jumpmaster to the X-Wing. @Stay On The Leader called it 'recycling', I think, and some version of that is most likely inevitable.

I want more ships, and upgrade cards, and Campaign Games, and AT ATs and a freaking awesome Nebulon B.

But our love is to OTS ships. Adapt and Improve. We deploy lots of ABXY. Fewer Protectorate Marvel Ships or UPS IWSYTDS firing 4 Reds and white turning (F*** you Lambda).

So I understand your opinion. But I want MORE X Wing.

If all current cards are allowed, waves 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 are all super balanced. I'd say waves 1-3 for a "movie" tournaments, and 1-5 for an "EU" tournament. All the ships in those waves have a unique play style:

TIE Fighters - swarms.
X-wings - Biggs and Wes
TIE Advanced - Vader, Juno.
Y-wings - TLT, Bombs.
Interceptors - Soontir, Carnor and RGPs.
A-wings - Chaardan, Snap/Crack shot and Juke.
Falcon - Fat Han and Rey/Finn.
Firespray - Scum Boba + Kath is strong.
B-wing - Jousting, Tactician, etc.
HWK - TLT, soon Synced Turret. Scum HWKs are very strong too.
Lambda - Palpatine, Kylo or Hux.
Bomber - Stress Rhymer, Tomax, Extra Munitions and soon Unguided Rockets.

Phantom - Always strong, now vulnerable to a lot of autodamage.
Defender - Post-nerf, TIE/D could be good in a wave 3 meta.
E-wing - Corran, that's all there ever was.
Z-95 - Scum ship, Homing + Scavenger crane.
Outrider - Super Dash + Autoblaster blocker.
Decimator - Kylo, Palp, HSCP+Gunner.

I'll be recommending to my FLGS to do a waves 1-3 ships only tournament after this Saturday's 125 pt 1 Ace only game.

Yeah I'd like to organise a Wave 1-3 tournament as well. I think it will 'feel' really good to see those ships the only thing on the table.

You can add the Transport, it came out a month before the CR-90. And it had Jek, Wes and Hobbie! Those are all Episode 4 X-Wing pilots, IIRC.

Wes and Hobbie are Episode 5 pilots actually, in the case of Wes, he's actually Wedge's snowspeeder gunner.

Hobbie was in the Rebel Alliance during the Battle of Yavin (in both canons and Legends), yet he wasn't flying in it. He was at Hoth as well though.

The expansions MUST keep coming until they get desperate enough to go back to the Legends continuity and bring me the Rogue Shadow. And maybe a Gunboat for the Cult of XG-1, but I'm more interested in adding the Rogue Shadow, preferably with imperial and rebel versions of Starkiller, Juno and PROXY, plus of course General Kota for Rebels only.

Let's make it an official format: The OT Wave 1-3 Format. All upgrades are allowed, only ships from wave1-3.

Any concerns?

Sounds good to me. Posted to my local groups FB page. See if there is any interest. Some potential questions:

  1. HWK or no HWK? I loved me some Dark Forces back in the day but not sure it fits.
  2. TLT? I think it's OK personally. Rebel Y-wings can't fly all over the place with green three hards so they won't be as difficult to track down.
  3. Edit: Just realized, that Scum Y-wings would technically be legal. I'd say no go for Scum.
  4. Most complicated idea but I think it might be fun. Bonus MOV for each different ship type in your list.

Just let the HWK in. Its wave1-3. Whatev. I like the ship too. Too few ships and it gets stale too.

Yeah, no scum. Sorry, wave6 pilots.

Nah, no extra rules

Same goes for half of the Astromechs and most of the early EPTs, sadly.
