Kylo Bren Special

By PT106, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I flew this at Naboo without using Targeting Synchronizer for rerolls and managed to get into day 2 including winning over top-8 player round 6 and losing to a top-8 player round 7. I think that with the recent FAQ change it may present an interesting option for Imperials. Thoughts?

I had a very similar list in mind, though with a cheaper shuttle with TS. I suppose with Backdraft with Adaptability she and Bren are at the same PS, so Backdraft shoots, rerolls Dice with TL, gets TL back, Bren shoots and can use TL? That's... Genius.

My list was this, but I think yours might be better:

TIE Bomber: · Tomax Bren (24)
Crack Shot (1)
Extra Munitions (2)
Proton Torpedoes (4)
Lightweight Frame (2)

Upsilon-class Shuttle: Starkiller Base Pilot (30)
Fire Control System (2)
Targeting Synchronizer (3)

TIE/sf Fighter: · "Backdraft" (27)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Fire Control System (2)
Lightweight Frame (2)
Special Ops Training (0)

It's even worse than that: vs PS9 - Backdraft shoots, gets target lock, Bren uses it to send torpedo to a target. Vs lower PS - both Backdraft and Bren grab a target lock, shuttle focuses. Then there are two strategies: Backdraft shoots first to weaken shields so Bren crit will land on the hull or if I'm going for raw damage Bren shoots first, if the roll fizzles, he uses Backdraft target lock to reroll and get that perfect 4 hit torpedo shot otherwise Backdraft uses TL himself and grabs it again with FCS. Now Upsilon shoots his 4 dice primary with focus and target lock from Backdraft. This way the opposing ship is usually eliminated before they even have a chance to figure out what hit them.

I may steal your list...

Feel free and if you do, don't forget that Kylo can coordinate bomber into target lock before 5K or coordinate ioned ship into barrel roll. Also do practice formation flying with the list (I did it before Naboo and it helped me a lot) and don't be afraid to bump Tomax as TS helps you there ;)

I like that idea, opens up system slot on Ups for other things like adv sensors, reinforced deflectors, etc. instead of FCS

I feel that FCS on Upsilon is a trap as with its dial it is very hard to keep a same ship in the arc for multiple rounds and you're making yourself very predictable while trying to do it.

Thanks man, that FCS and Targeting Synchronizer combo is killer. I'm super worried about Backdraft popping early, but whilst he's in play... Ooft

The way I see it, you may have to use focus defensively on Backdraft so he won't be killed in first two rounds of combat (esp with shuttle pulling crits away). This means that Thomax will unload everything and given that you PS-kill a lot of stuff with alpha strikes first two rounds, the opponent may not have enough firepower to pop him.

If Kylo takes a crit with draw their fire, does he get to assign his condition token? I'm assuming not as he wasn't the target of the attack?

No, he doesn't (It would be too powerful otherwise)

God it'd be a beaut though. It's going really well tonight, though I need to learn distance control with Tomax a bit more I think and I'm looking forward to Unguided Rockets to see how they are.

I tried an alternate shuttle, Stridan with Systems Officer and Pattern Analyzer. It was decent for action economy but the shuttle isn't as much as a terrible threat you don't want to shoot. I want to try Stridan again though I think.

Also need to practice more with the targrt lock sharing as I made a few incorrect decisions on shooting order. Great list though man

Edit: thinking back some more I felt Tomax was a touch too squishy, so I want to try giving him lightweight frame. I'll drop the shuttle down to Stridan to provide extra actions (and 4 red Dice!).

Backdraft is interesting, I've flown her a few times and made the mistake of always turning out of fights to shoot from the rear arc but I think it's a bit of a trap as you then take a long time to get back into the fight. I think the rear arc should be used in the first pass maybe but really shines when enemy ships are trying to chase her down. Definetly need more practice though.

I might swap the torpedoes to plasmas as well, to grt pattern analyzer on Stridan, though suppose the mini focus effect you get with proton torpedoes is quite strong. Hmm

Had fantastic fun with the lost today. I've gone down to plasmas on Tomax, with lightened frame, and Stridan with Collision Detector and pattern analyzer so it's much more of a support ship (but hits like a brick). Still not sure of o prefer Kylo and draw their fire though.

Anyway I got the sweet double on arc the same ship with Backdraft today. This means you can add a crit when shooting out of the front arc AND add a crit again when shooting out of the rear. My rear shot was pretty nice...
