Table Top Simulator

By General Veers, in X-Wing

You can't flip the table in Vassal....

Also, if you play on TTS please treat yourself by spawning the IPod and going to "Children's Song". There you will find a song called "At the Fair" or something like that. Just hit auto replay and enjoy.

So I guess my question is, how do I get either one? I think I'm leaning towards Vassal, but TTS sounds good too. Is there a site to download them?

I suggest you use the magic of google to find them. It's really not difficult ;)

Thank you for your wisdom. :D

Also is either platform playable on a smartphone? Or is there any other way to play Xwing on a phone?

I doubt either is. Benchmark https://xws-bench.github.io/bench/ might be but its AI is godawful.

You know you can disable that on TTS, right?

I do agree though, it's stupid as hell that this feature is (was? I think I recall them having changed it a few patches ago, but I'm not sure) enabled by default.

I should have been more clear lol I am entirely pro table flipping! You can always reset it anyways.

I highly respect haslo's opinion on the subject, MORE THAN MY OWN, despite being the one who has shepered the x-wing vassal module since wave 3 (inclusively). He has a lot of experience with both platforms, outstripping my own by far on TTS.

I did try out TTS during the xmas 2016 sales. I play several board games and wanted to check them out on this platform. I couldn't resist the urge to of course try the X-Wing module in there. I didn't test it longer than an hour. I knew I could become better if I had known the basic ins and outs of TTS itself with other, simpler games, first, which I eventually will have if I find time to play other games on it.

My quick impressions with an hour of fudging around with FFG forum user Klutz:

-I understand tying dials to ships and what it gives as an advantage, but it sucks being FORCED to do it every time, for every game, for every ship. I like the option of direct movement on vassal. There is one (or used to be one?) on TTS but it involves typing acronyms you have to semi-learn by heart, which is what it is.

-Being forced to lock down every little thing is another step in which you fight off the interface's natural urges, meh

-There's no easy way to find the latest and greatest, centralized tutorial guide for TTS. You can find a lot of deprecated ones scattered around on reddit, youtube, etc. It took a while to be convinced we had the right 'downloaded table' for it.

TTS takes about 5 minutes to figure out. Vassal I've had downloaded for the last year and have made multiple attempts to try it but couldn't put the time into doing it because it took too long. Whereas TTS all I do is copy a squad from my Squad Builder, load up a room on the server, upload the squad, layout my dials, save them to each ship (oo, type in "sd", very difficult...) and that is it. All set to go. Every action I need is one click on the dial. No trying to remember what Keys do what.

Its so simple you don't need tutorials. Just ask someone that walks into your server room and they help you out in a matter of minutes. I've done it a dozen times with new people. Didn't even have a mic either.

That must be it, I'm a technically challenged moron.

I'm not saying you are. I'm saying give it another try. I know Vassal is dear to your heart though.

P.S.-Sorry if I came off as a jerk

Doesn't Vassal take the same steps, except maybe one less (saving dials to each ship)?

Vassal you load up a room, upload your squad... Wait for opponent... Begin game?

and you can pretty much do anything in vassal from a right click menu if you so desire

Interesting to see the different points of view. I found TTS to be much more user friendly, though I acknowledge that both have had some improvements with newer versions. Also, graphics are a plus in my book

It seems that a lot of people stick with Vassal over TTS because that's where a big part of the community, but I must say I have never had much trouble getting a good game on TTS... maybe one day there will be a switch...

I'm thinking about getting this, anyone know if this is still in use enough to get games weekly?

Vassal just seems way to complicated for me, but would like to give it a try though

Yeah, pretty much every time I start TTS, there's at least one open room of X-Wing (and few closed ones). People doing open rooms or advertising on in-game IRC seem to find an opponent pretty fast. So it is still in use and its still being worked on.

Not trying to convert anyone - *just* for X-Wing, Vassal probably will be good enough if you don't care for visuals and tabletop game feel. But if you do play TTS or want to play board games online (pretty much every known one is on the workshop already), X-Wing is there too.

Correcting some misinformation:

  • centralized guide and knowledgebase exists there: https://github.com/tjakubo2/TTS_xwing/wiki
  • if you played one or two games and something still feels super clunky or anything takes more than real-life equivalent (really, list building shouldn't take more than 60 seconds, whole setup another 60s and you're ready to play, whole game can be done with button clicking) - you're most likely missing some important functionality, *ask* instead of just complaining
  • no content is missing, sometimes new ships lack 3D models and are done as flat tiles until someone skilled does them, but cards and playing avaialbility should be near instant, *report missing stuff* because that's an oversight

I just installed TTS a couple days ago. Was much simpler to learn than Vassal was. The new Unified Mod has made TTS easy. I've played a few games already and they just FEEL better than Vassal. There have been open rooms every time I've logged on.

Yeah with the newest mod now handling instant list spawning, bumping, auto movement and actions, easy undo, and easy range rulers, I've very much enjoyed the TTS experience. It's a completely different beast than 3 months ago.

Tabletop Simulator is more intuitive. It's just the real game pretty much except in a virtual environment. If figuring out how to assign the automatic dials is too much for you, then you can always treat your dials as decks of cards and memorize the simple movement commands. br1 for bank right one speed, tr3t for turn right 3 speed talon roll, xrb for barrel roll right all the way back, etc.

Bomb dropping is automated now, and the game will give you a text notification when a ship has overlapped an asteroid.

Steam has sales all the time and even if you're impatient the $20 it costs his well worth it. The community is friendly and will be more than happy to help you learn TTS. People have even made promo cards in the game.

You might want to look at the TTS version of Armada, it has full scripting, ships move on their own, have built in range finders, etc. It is kind of neat to see it all play out.

Can someone link Xwing and Armada downloads for TTS and for vassal. And their main set-up helps?

I also like TTS more and find it more user friendly. I tried Vassal first last year and felt like was using some 90s program with the horrible/primitive interface. It is 100% precise, though, which I guess is a plus even if it doesn't actually represent how IRL ships end up moving. Both have automated bumping, automated list building, instant movement by pressing 1 button, undoing commands, etc. Main difference is the graphics and the fact that it's hard to get the perfect camera angle in TTS, which I guess is just like IRL.

Also, it updates just as fast, I think. I actually saw the reddit announcement for TTS wave XI before the Vassal one. Think many of you just aren't even bothering to check what's going on with both games.

It costs less than any of the ships in the game, this forum isn't exactly poverty scene since X-wing is a very expensive game. It is technically infinitely more than $0, but you get what you pay.

Not sure about Armada, but as far as X-Wing goes:

Vassal: http://www.vassalengine.org/wiki/Module:Star_Wars:_X-Wing_Miniatures_Game
Info: http://xwvassal.info/
Slack (#vassal channel): https://xwingtmg-inviter.herokuapp.com/ (there may be some other preferred medium, not sure)

TTS (Steam workshop): http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=862644552
Info: https://github.com/tjakubo2/TTS_xwing/wiki
Discord: http://discord.gg/WHKXDBD

They both have easy game setup. TTS is paid but offers bajilion other tabletop games for free from workshop and is in 3D (pro/con depending on you, also more demanding on hardware).
