Best for competitive play

By Rogue 4, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Okay, so if money was no object, what it the best way to play this game?

I am a SUPER competitive person (but not a jerk) and I want to play this game. So, what should I buy, what team should I build and run (please don't say what I like, what is the best out there now)?

Give me a list of the best out there, what is your opinion on what is broken (or can be abused legally for now), what are the best command cards to run, etc. etc.

If I showed up to a regional, nationals, or worlds what will I see and how to go against it?

Make me the best player you are.

Thanks.

Go.....

No offense but there's a few problems with your questions:

  1. You're asking for a ton of info here. More than can reasonably be answered at once or even in one thread.
  2. If the meta was solved to the degree you suggest, the game wouldn't be as interesting.
  3. Playing to learn this stuff is kind of the point of the game. Player skill is a huge factor and the best way to improve that is to play.
  4. There's already lots of discussion on many of questions you asked on other threads here.

So my advice would be to join other threads and ask appropriate tangential questions. If you really just want to see the 'best' lists, look for Regional Results threads and see what won. Worlds is in just over a month (May 4th & 5th) so you'll get a big list dump of great lists after that too.

Nick is right: net-decking will only get you so far. I've found that two people can pilot the exact same list, but have drastically different results.

It seems that many of the best lists require a significant degree of finesse and savvy timing in order to work well. For a while I had a really hard time winning with the new Jedi Luke...but then I learned some key things about how to run him, and now he's dominating my games. Same piece...different pilot (or perhaps different piloting maneuvers).

So yeah...just play and practice. See what works and what doesn't. Watch the video recordings of tournament matches (especially finals and semi-finals), and try to figure out why the players made X move instead of Y. If they are good players, then they probably make relatively few mistakes, and so you can gain a lot of insight from analyzing their games.

Thanks for the input.

I was trying to see some links to videos, blogs (people still write those?), or other web articles to brush up on some things. I need help with some command deck making skills, but here are some lists I have come up with so far using a deck builder.

Rebel: Jedi Luke, Alliance ranger, eRebel Trooper, Leia Organa, C-3PO

Scum: eHK Assassin Droids, Trandoshan Hunters, Bossk, Shyla Varad, Temporary Alliance, C-3PO

Imperial: Kayn Somos, eSnowtroopers, eStormtroopers, eHeavy Stormtroopers, Cross training, Vaders Finest

Thoughts on these? I will be playing them a lot, and will take advice on some mainstay command cards for any of these list, but appreciate your input. Thanks!

Another popular alternative here is to go with elite Aliance Rangers and drop Leia for gideon and r2-d2.

Trandoshans and eHK's tend to be high on the "overcosted for what they can do" scale. You might want to consider adding gideon here and regular hk's. Focused regular HK's hit like trucks, still. In lieu of the trandoshans, a popular choice right now is elite Weequays.

Kayn is mostly viewed in the same respect as eHK's/Trandos. Just costs too much for what he does. The most popular eSnow lists typically go eSnow, eStorm, eStorm, Royal Guards, upgrades. The worlds winning list was eStorm, eStorm, eHeavy, Agent Blaise, officer, officer, rule by fear, zillo technique, cross training, targeting computer on heavies. I think that's right. The eHeavies are much much better when you can hide them with blaise to ensure the blast 2/ ~ +2 goes off more reliably.

I understand the competitive drive. I've won a couple of regionals, for what its worth concerning my advice. As for the worlds list, from my post history you can view my regionals report for how they play. That said, this was pre-jabba's realm, so you might consider the value Terro or elite Jets bring. If i were to play a trooper list at a tourney tomorrow, it would still be this one.

Thank you so much for the input! I really appreciate it.

I will post a command deck soon to go with each of those and would love feedback! Thanks again

One tip that I often suggest to newer players with regard to squad-building is this: As much as possible, try to focus your deployment cards around a few traits (Trooper, Hunter, Brawler, Leader, etc), rather than many different traits. That way you'll have a much easier time using all of your command cards and you won't have 'dead' cards in your hand after you lose a single group.

For example, it is usually probably better to center your squad on Hunters (Greedo, Vinto, HKs, Weequays, Shyla) or Creatures (Bantha, Rancor, Nexu) or Troopers (Imperials mainly) or another trait, than to try to combine Hunters and Creatures and Troopers. Or if you do have several different types of groups that don't share 1 or 2 common traits, then you'll need to make sure that you carefully choose command cards that are use-able by most of your key figures...with the result that some of your groups just won't have any command card help during the game. (Take note that "Filler" units such as Hired Guns or Alliance Smugglers don't typically need command card help anyway, because they're usually not doing the heavy lifting.)

Yes, this is a general rule and there are exceptions. Try to think of this advice as training wheels: it's there to help get you started, but once you've got a good sense of things it'll become intuitive enough that you won't need to worry about it so much anymore.

Yeah, I see this now since trying to build a CC deck for my Rebels. I came up with this:

A Powerful Influence (Jedi)

Assassinate (Hunter)

Battlefield Awareness (Leader)

Call the Vanguard

Camouflage

Counter Attack (Brawler)

Disorient

Element of Surprise

Focus

Heart of Freedom (Rebel)

Hit and Run

Mitigate

Planning (Leader)

Take Initiative

Urgency

It's not too bad spread out. What am I missing here, or what do I need? Thanks

Assuming you're playing the rebel list you linked above originally:

Son of skywalker is the best command card in the game. Probably want that one for sure.

Negation is pretty big for stopping take initiative against you and has relevance against the other 0 cost cards that keep coming out that are powerful.

I'd drop the Powerful Influence and Counter Attack cards to fit the two I recommended. The rest looks great.

eRangers, Jedi Luke, eEcho base troopers, C3PO, Gideon amd R2

And I switched those command cards you suggested. I will try this Saturday at a tournament.

I am going to post a command deck for those Imperial troopers soon.

Thanks again!

These command card might fit better for you:

▪ ASSASSINATE [3] -
▪ BLITZ [1] -
▪ CALL THE VANGUARD [2] -
▪ CAMOUFLAGE [1] -
▪ ELEMENT OF SURPRISE [0] -
▪ FORCE RUSH [0] -
▪ HEART OF FREEDOM [2] -
▪ MITIGATE [0] -
▪ NEGATION [1] -
▪ PARRY [0] -
▪ PLANNING [0] -
▪ POSITIONING ADVANTAGE [0] -
▪ SON OF SKYWALKER [3] -
▪ TAKE INITIATIVE [0] -
▪ TOOLS FOR THE JOB [2]

IMO, the 'best' list in the game now is a list based around Jabba, Temporary Alliance, Gideon and/or C3P0, 2x Elite Weequays- finish off to taste.

I used this list today in a tournament and went 3-0. I learned a lot, and next weekend I am switching Leia and the Echo troopers to test that.

eRangers, Jedi Luke, eEcho base troopers, C3PO, Gideon and R2.

First game I went against Grand Inquisitor, Heavy stormtroopers, Stormtroopers x2, Snowtroopers, Jet troopers, and an Imperial Officer.

I got the Jet troopers first, took out some other troopers of different variety here and there and had enough VPs at the end to win.

Second game was interesting. Jabba with Crumb, Boba Fett, and 2 elite Ugnaughts, and 3 regular Ugnaughts.

That darn Junk droid was annoying, so I killed all the Ugnaughts. Boba and Jabba were a beast. We played the map where you talked to all the patrons, and I did so I had enough VPs. Luke was dead at start of round 2.

Third game was against eWeequays, eTrans Hunters, HK droids, the big Aqualis dude and the whip girl.

I lost an Echo trooper and 2 Rangers and wiped out most of his guys. He only had a weequay left.

nice job!
