Vassal Freshman Spring 2017 [NA SECTOR]

By Green Knight, in Star Wars: Armada Organized Play

So as someone guilty of exceedingly long games, I would like to express that I'm unlikely to pursue Vassal tournaments in the future, not because I haven't found it enjoyable or because I think I'm playing slow or anything.

Put simply the internet connection from my desktop is dubious at best, one of the joys of living in Australia, exacerbated by our specific set-up. Now I play as fast as I can, and for the most part this fleet does not require very long periods of thought, but as people can attest, I was just having frequent connection drop outs and lagging generally. The lag added imperceptible amounts of time, but which over a full game of Armada I'm sure add up. The drop outs however added drastic amounts of time.

It's really unfortunate, and I really want to thank my opponents from the two first rounds for being exceedingly patient.

On this note @Dorrin314 - what's up! Hopefully connection won't be so sh*tty and we can have an enjoyable game. I hope you have voice chat because I love talking.

Let me know when you're free.

I understand that one player get a bye when you have an uneven number. But i know it this way that the last player get the bye. Or at least someone who has no win so far. And not the top players. In this case it ruins the chances for Pain to win. Or better, it is not in his hands anymore to play against the first player and win on his own.

It is the same as giving Capt. Weather the bye. It makes no sense.

As i said, i just find it strange (as in never saw it this way).

I believe Pain was the lowest ranked player, Green Knight has just already given him the points which makes him currently second.

Good point. A MOV of 140 is not really possible with a score of 16.

It is the 8-0 MOV 140 from the 3rd round.

It is just confusing, because it looks like Pain has a score of 16 without the bye.

Cryodex automatically adds in the bye points.

What you are seeing in the standings is the bye result already added into Paindemic score. He only had 8pts after round 2.

Round 2 complete - well done people!

One player have opted to withdraw: @emsgoof , leaving us with an odd number of players for the final round. Let me know if someone else is thinking about dropping; that way we can avoid one player missing a game.

While some players are clearly out of the running for 1st place, the fight over the top 4 slots is going to be pretty intense. Only a few points differentiate the top players (with one notable exception).

The deadline for round 3 is Thursday, April 20th.

I've head reports of some very long games (6+ hours) in the previous rounds. That's too long for one game of Armada. Since this is the 3rd round you're all more experienced now and should be able to play a game at a reasonable pace. Make a plan, stick to the plan. Do not overmeasure or overthink. Play, like you would on the table. I guarantee it will be more fun. According to my own standards 3 hours is more than enough, especially if running a voice chat.

Good luck with the final round!

Yes, noticed this as well. It is just confusing to show the standing with byes already added.

All is fine, all is great *heading back to the EU sector*

This is one of those "Don't Like what is said but I hit the Like button anyway because I understand" posts.

This is very unfortunate. We need somebody to get you a better connection!

Also, with reports of very long games...I promise that...unless Ard and I are playing...games do take a bit longer with text chat, but are actually quicker with voice. Remember to factor in setup times and cleanup times. That is EASILY 1/2 hour at the beginning of every tournament, where i'm getting all by cards, ships, and tokens ready.

Once you get VASSAL down pat, it is really pretty quick. The experienced players can usually finish a game in less than two hours.

Even when it is a little late, i have some statistics from the EU and NA sector lists i want to share:

Average Fleet Points:
NA: 394,86
EU: 395,29

Average Squadpoints:
EU: 83,86
NA: 74,79

Average Ship activations:
EU: 4,79
NA: 4,57

Average Squadron number:
EU: 6,00
NA: 4,79

Min. number of ships:
NA: 2
EU: 2

Max. number of ships:
EU: 8
NA: 7

Min. number of squadrons:
NA: 0
EU: 0

Max. number of squadrons:
EU: 10
NA: 8

I find it quite interessting, that the EU sector has such a higher number of squadrons and as well the higher number on ship activations (even when 4,79 and 4,57 are nearly the same) in the lists.

And i am really surprissed to see such a low averge number on squadron numbers in the lists.

Haha it's more I don't think it's fair to the people playing me to burden them so unduly. Just because my internet sucks doesn't mean others should have to suffer!

A bye? Boo. :(

If I can find the time, I'll play you as well as @Hystarr Paindemic. We'll have to see if my schedule permits though, since my university is ramping up for final exams at the end of the month.

If you can, sure, thanks, but don't sweat it if you can't.

For those who are interested:

@itzSteve (Madine) vs. @Mattorium (Ozzel) is on for Wednesday the 12th at roughly 5:30-6p PDT. That's US west coast time for all you time challenged people. :D

In a bit of counterprogramming, Admiral Motti will be conducting a fleet exercise, pitting his newest Star Destroyers Manticore and Gryphon under the local command of @GiledPallaeon against the brand new Interdictor and her consort Corrupter under the local command of @Hystarr , also Wednesday 4/12 at 8:30pm EDT.

EDIT: In a turn of events indicating more sophisticated programming on these forums than I expected, tagging yourself does not result in a notification.

Will this force reshuffle of the matchups?

I think it just means he's replacing Moodswing as Q-DOWg's opponent, but I think @Green Knight will have that sorted quicker than me.

That's too bad he's out, but it's great to be back in! (I need all the practice I can get)

I'm fine with playing @Q-DOWg again if that's how it works out.

CABIN ALTERT!

Like any proper Norwegian I'll be spending the extender Easter weekend up in my mountain cabin.

I have internet, but will probably be busy hiking/skiing/stuffing my face, so if I don't reply you know why...

For some strange reason the program also messed up matches 1 & 2. Dunno why; I've fixed it now.

Thanks to @Dorrin314 for catching that one.

In GiledPallaeon vs @Hystarr final score was 157 to 365, respectively, for an MoV of 158 and a 8-3 in the favor of Hystarr. We played his Fleet Ambush

As is typical for me in third rounds of tournaments, I tried to get fancy with my footwork, and instead of a dead Corrupter , I got a dead Gryphon , which spiraled into an annihilation of my fleet, leaving only a Comms Net flotilla fleeing the exercise. Well played to Hystarr, we both learned a lot. I got my weekly reminder to pay attention and to not miss a beat (*cough QLT *cough). The tournament was great fun overall, I'm looking forward to the summer tourney.

And my squads were near perfect in hitting for damage along the way....Poor Bossk and Rhymer paid the ultimate price along with my Victory II. We got the ISD twins, one of the Gozanti twins, and the lonely Raider to keep them company in the depths of space though. Was a nail biter for a while there @GiledPallaeon that is for sure. I did not capitalize well on my set up with it being the 1st time playing fleet ambush. HA. Mistakes were made. Ships were blown up. Fun was had. ?
