Podcast of Five Rings

By Daidoji Reiji, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Hey All-

Daidoji Reiji here; some of you from the RPG and old Southeastern US CCG circles probably know me.

Some good friends of mine and I all started a podcast whose title pays tribute to the hobby that allowed us all to meet- L5R. We will likely talk about that plenty as news continues to roll in from Fantasy Flight come April 19th. Not only are we going to cover L5R and other card games, we'll also be talking video games (featured heavily in this first episode), anime/manga, film/TV, and technology, each of us bringing a new topic to discuss each week. These are all things we have a good bit of interest in and have come together on as a group.

We hope you'll listen to us rambling a little while, and if you enjoy it give the show a follow or subscribe on your podcast service of choice, or if you prefer a video version we have one on YouTube as well. The Tao says "Every journey begins with a single step." We hope you'll join us as we take ours. Whether it is filled with fortune or disaster, we'll have laughs nonetheless.

Thanks for your time - Reiji (Obsidian)

Hey all,

We just put out a new episode this morning, and we are back to an L5R topic for almost 35 mins of the podcast. This time we are talking about our dislikes of the game and the setting, with mostly a setting focus.

You will get to hear me be a bit salty about a certain seafaring clan, as well as our discussions on Shourido and its place in Rokugan. Hope you all will check it out!

Link to the YouTube vid is here, and all of our other places to find us are in the first post.

Hello Everyone,

Leading up to the news tomorrow,m we decided to talk L5R yet again in our latest episode of the podcast. This time, we kept strictly with the RPG- our favorite type of L5R game to play and why. It could be a style, setting, era, or big bad that we particularly enjoy. Hope you RPG fans will give it a listen, link to the YouTube is here.

I hope this Podcast gets better after today's reveal. After listening to a 20 minute whinefest on how video games are rated, I was finished.

This week we talked our thoughts on the majority of what was revealed of the LCG, as well as discussing some of the AMA questions. To say the least, we like what what we see for the most part! Released the episode early so people could listen over the weekend if they so choose.

Link to YouTube vid is here, and you can listen on iTunes or Soundcloud if you prefer those platforms. Just search Podcast of Five Rings.

Not surprised none of your videos have more than 100 views. If i want to listen to badly produced ramble i can just stay inside my own head. Next.

Spider won. Pack it up, start over.

lol

@Dovla, no need to be so aggressive.

I do have to agree though that the quality makes it hard to listen to.

We'll see what we can do!

Discord does something to the sound quality, I'll likely try messing around with each person recording audio independently and mixing it together in Audition from there. Should improve things!

Try skype instead

I would try to focus down to a few topics, instead of being all over the gaming universe.

You can typically do 1-2 things well or every topic briefly and poorly.

For instance, if you concentrated on FFG's LCG line and and their minis games, you would have focused, informed content, assuming the host & co-host prepare and know what they are talking about.

I listened to the first episode, hoping it to be more focused on L5R than it was, and didn't really care for it being all over the place. I prefer listening to podcasts that focus on as few as subjects as possible. One is preferable.

I gave it a second chance with the sixth episode, mostly because I was expecting it to be more focused on L5R due to the recent news. This episode was much better but didn't make me want to subscribe. Mostly because I know that this podcast covers a wider range of topics that I don't really care about. I might check out more episodes when the game gets released or there is other major news about it but will probably turn them off quickly if it looks like there won't be a strong focus on L5R.

I mean... the name of the podcast IS Podcast of the Five Rings, right? ;)

To be fair Sparks, we took inspiration more from the title of Musashi's "Book of Five Rings" than we did L5R itself.... thus the five general categories (rings) our topics fall under. Us happening to all meet through L5R (and be japanophiles) just happened to be the icing on the cake for the podcast name.

I can understand if people don't care for the format, though; it gives each of us a chance to bring something to the table somewhat equally rather than having to weed out two of our topics every week. Which is another reason I only post the episodes in which we discuss L5R here, since other topics might not fall under people's interests. We have time codes in our YouTube vids, for people who just want to hear or only care for one part. So we're not going to toy with the format, and we all totally understand the podcast isn't palatable for all tastes; and that's a okay! We do it for fun, and not everyone is going to have fun or enjoy listening to our ramblings.

We will strive to improve the audio quality though, and will be talking more L5R as even more stuff rolls out. I think the more people we have discussing the game we all (most of us : P ) care about, the better it could be for the new iteration of the game.

Based on feedback from the audience, we've begun breaking down the episodes on YouTube into parts. This way, people who only want to listen to certain sections can do so without searching for timecodes. Part 1 can be found here.

Full episodes are still up on iTunes and Soundcloud for those who enjoy the whole podcast at once, and a video will also go up on YouTube Friday that has the entire cast as well.

For this video, we talk about the details in the recent article "Crafting a Dynasty." Hope you all give it a listen!

Here is the first part of our new series called Monthly Modules! The first few episodes, which should release once or twice a week throughout May, involve the old first edition mod "Lesser of Two Evils" converted to 4th edition rules and played on roll20. Will this band of (mostly) scummy Lion samurai be able to help the governor Yasuki Nori with his peasant problem?

Here's our thoughts on the news from the article "The Conflicts of Rokugan." Looking forward to the conflict example that will come out later this week.

Also, stay tuned for tomorrow, where I will post the part of the episode in which we all take Strange Assembly's new "Which Clan Are You" quiz.

I look forward to useful discussion of problems identified with the current iteration of the quiz. :)

I love that you guys did the quiz! It was a fun thing to point to when new players came along back in the day. And I can do it again now! :D

I think you did a good job (IMO its the best L5R quiz we've had so far), even if some of the answers are a little transparent for people familiar to the setting. However, that will probably happen with any L5R quiz anyone makes unless it involves dozens of questions to balance stuff out. Something akin to the old D&D quiz that actually stats you as a character (maybe when we have an even better understanding of the new rules, there can be one that makes your results into a card?).

It's definitely great for people new to the game or unfamiliar to the setting though, and as Sparks said something to point people on the fence about who to play towards. Here's a youtube vid for those who prefer that format.

Part 2 of our RPG Lets play of the 1E mod "Lesser of Two Evils" is up. Watch/listen to me forget to let the PCs know something important and have to rewind time a little, and our scummy Lion squirm as they try to figure out what is going on with the peasants.

Episode 9 Part 1 is up on YouTube as well as iTunes and Soundcloud.

I think FFg really, REALLY wants me to play Phoenix in the new set; they look so fun.

Here's part 3 of our Monthly Module featuring the old 1e mod "Lesser of Two Evils." Let the dungeoning and fighting begin!

In this video, we discuss the first ever FFG L5R LCG fiction "Her Father's Daughter." We talk likes and dislikes, as well as the normal bit of wild speculation.

Part 4 of our L5R Monthly Module is live. Our gang of scummy Lion continue to make their way through the mysterious temple.
