Roak vs. Torkil - HWK vs. HWK

By j_man_04, in X-Wing Rules Questions

What happens when Rebel Roark and Scum Torkil attempt to use their abilities on the same ship? Does the initiative bid get the advantage? Or do they cancel each other out? Or, does Torkil use his ability at the end of Activation, only to have the ability overruled by Roark at the start of combat?

Roark Garnet - At the start of the Combat phase, choose 1 other friendly ship at Range 1-3. Until the end of the phase, treat that ship's pilot skill value as "12".

Torkil Mux - At the end of the Activation phase, choose 1 enemy ship at Range 1-2. Until the end of the Combat phase, treat that ship's pilot skill value as "0".

The start of the Combat phase is strictly later than the end of the Activation phase. Roark can undo Mux.

Thanks! I edited my initial post with that possibility right when you were responding. However, just playing along, Mux says the PS stays 0 until the end of the combat phase. Why should Roark be able to override Mux's ability? I would like to find a reference within the rules that leads to this conclusion, if possible.

FAQ 4.3.1 p. 5: Altered Pilot Skill

"If several game effects alter the pilot skill of a ship, only the most recent effect is applied."

Got it. Thanks. Works for me!

I'm thinking of flying Roark along with Zeb in the TIE to get economic use out of the Captured TIE card, so this may be something I encounter. Just wanted to tap in so I'm prepared if/when it happens.

Enjoy your hwt HWK on HWK awktion.

We had an escalation tournament last saturday that I started with a tlt lothal rebel with docked zeb, then added VI/Captured TIE Ahsoka, then ptl/kanan/tlt sabine, then roark with tlt and engine (and nien numb). Basically, try to keep everyone at range 3 all game with the ability to boost on all your ships, and ahsoka letting someone boost at the start of combat. And roark in the final round to make SURE no one can shoot ahsoka if I don't want them to, or else let someone shoot first. Sadly I had to drop before the final round so Ididn't get to actually play roark :(. The second and third rounds went fantastic though

Instead of using Zeb, take Rex- PS 12 untouchable while decreasing attack power. In epic, taking a CR-90 up to PS 12 is phenomenal.

I'm not sure I'm following. In order to assign the Suppressive Fire condition, I have to attack, which breaks the Captured TIE card.

You don't take Captured TIE on Rex.

How else would you make him untouchable?

You wouldn't, the poster who suggested that was wrong to do so.

Thanks. I was just making sure I wasn't missing something.

Okay... @Astech said "Rex- PS 12 untouchable while decreasing attack power."

I ask, how is he untouchable when Captured TIE gets dropped after assigning the Suppressive Fire Condition.

@thespaceinvader said that was wrong to suggest that.

So, what am I missing?

See my edit comment. I'm just messing with you. :D

Consider my hat tipped. I was like, what the heck. What obvious rule did I overlook? Am I that dumb? haha

Dang it. I posed at 12 am, and this is what I get. I should have said "Rex is untouchable until he fires"... Once he's behind the lines of the enemy it's super hard to turn around and attack him.

Ha, all good. Interesting idea. That'll take some practice to keep it close enough to the HWK for the ability to trigger during combat.

I mean, it's really not. Turrets exist.

And, you know, wasting Roark making the guy who's designed the make your enemies attack him, not attack, and not to get someone actually attacking, doing it at PS12 is a terrible idea.

Using Roark on Rex is good, but you do it to MAKE him attack first.
