The Auzituck Gunship should have a hull value of 0.15

By Kdubb, in X-Wing

While I am in love with the Scurrg and don't really mind the Tie Agressor, I.. really don't care for the Auzituck Gunship. I made some comments about this to my brother-in-law (former player of the game), and after reading the wookiepedia article on the ship which details how this ship is literally made out of wood and sap*, in a fit of hilarity, we discussed the prospect of a spaceship made of wood and sap fighting alongside ships composed of military grade titanium alloy. It was only a matter of time before he decided to "crunch the numbers".

Here's what he had to share-

Since the X-wing hull is made of titanium alloy (assuming titanium comprises a majority of the alloy ratio), the ultimate tensile strength of an X-wing's hull could range from 434 Mpa (63,000 psi) [100% titanium] to 1400 Mpa (200,000 psi) [titanium beta C alloy]. Unfortunately there are no hard numbers on Wroshyr wood (type of wood from the wroshyr tree of Kashyyyk) which is the main material of the Auzituck Gunship; assuming that Wroshyr wood is as strong (or marginally stronger) than the strongest hardwood found in the US, the Black Locust wood has a tensile strength of 70 Mpa (10,180 psi). Using basic ratio to find the relative hull value of the Auzituck Gunship (70/1400= x/3); the hull value for this "gunship" should be 0.15."

After discussing this further, we realized there was no way FFG could have gotten this wrong because this game is perfectly thematic and is a 100% perfect simulation of the Star Wars universe. How else could we explain that awful villain Fenn Rau using his vaunted attani mindlink at nearly all times, X-wings only seeing use by the greatest pilot in the universe Biggs Darklighter (the only one able to make them usable according to lore), and the rebellion's greatest star fighters the K-wing and VCX-100, as seen in their trench run of the Death Star, appearing in most every competitive rebel list? Considering all this, we took some time to figure out what we had gotten wrong. We eventually realized there was a big factor we had failed to take into consideration...

That must be some really, REALLY strong sap.

*Yes, seriously. Look it up. When I read that sentence, horror fell upon me as I was pretty sure FFG was introducing a ship featured in the Holiday Special. And just fyi- yes,I understand Star Wars isn't really applicable to the real world at all, and if you haven't caught it yet, this is all in jest. But still... the fact that this thing is made out of wood and sap really drives me nuts for some reason.

Your first mistake is assuming that space wood cannot be harder than earth wood.

*face palm*

A discussion such as this taken seriously would be as dumb as those discussions that take place trying to explain how star wars star fighters maneuver in space as if their purely fictional "space" has any set standard comparable to our universes space.

In other words... I'm aware.

Wait until the Ewok glider comes out with Attack 4.

Interior. Not hull..

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Auzituck_anti-slaver_gunship: "The interiors were made from wroshyr trees, with sap serving as glue."

It's also from SW:Rebels, not the Holiday Special.

So basically any G forces and inertial changes what so ever and the interior is simply pulp. But the exterior will live on ...

Tonle Sap, to be exact. Auzituck looks like a Giant Mekong catfish as well.

You said "Space Wood" & "Earth Wood" :D

Sorry, my inner 12 year old is acting up again. :)

note that wroshyr trees require Pneumo-hammers in order to get something as simple as a spike through it. that is, a Pneumatic hammer. aka a Rivet Gun wood that can support kilo-tonnage of tree stretching kilometers into the sky.

it basically would have to be as tough as the strongest metals.

I think that might break the concept.

One Point Ship

There are stronger woods here on earth. There's one from South America, I think, that will dull carbide saw blades. Where it grows, the soil has a very high silica content which causes the wood to be ridiculously hard on saws.

Iron Wood from Australia is supposed to be the strongest wood on earth.

You are forgetting about the force. It's what holds the Wookie Spaceship together.

Of course it would not work with wood only! :)

Perhaps the sap is covered all over the ship which helps it from the laser blasts. These aren't bullets. Maybe the sap absorbs the blast a bit better than that weak titanium stuff mens razors are made of.

Star Wars has inertial damping and artificial gravity...

Pretty sure that wood is on record resisting some degree of turbolaser bombardment, there is no thing on earth even remotely comparable.

You're ignoring the most important question about the sap. Is it tasty? Can we eats it?

It is actually a narcotic, so yeah you can eat it and get high.

Yeah, we don't even have turbolasers to shoot at our wood.

Wookiees have some pretty big hard wood.

Sure, and if we are going to be nit picky about it, inertial damping is just that ... damping. Doesn't mean that it eliminates all inertial forces ... it just lessens them for the pilot to survive some of the moves made ... initiate a severe enough move where the dampeners don't compensate correctly and ... SPLAT. Now the pilot is swimming in pulp ... or is pulp ... or both ... :P

Well yes. BUt wood is significantly more tough than squishy meatbags, so if your damping is failing hard enough to kill your pilots, you really don't have to worry about your interior decor.

Nope. Ships have inertial compensators for the interior. Otherwise, Han would be pulp every time he made the jump to hyperspace or pulled a few maneuvers.

Ack.

Tyler Durden: Oxygen gets you high. In a catastrophic emergency, you're taking giant panicked breaths. Suddenly you become euphoric, docile. You accept your fate. It's all right here. Emergency water landing - 600 miles an hour. Blank faces, calm as Hindu cows.

Apparently, Wookiees use gum.
