Firefly - Custom Epic Expansion Pack

By Bullox, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

Hello all.

My 3 favorite ships in all of Sci-Fi’dom are the Millennium Falcon, Serenity from Firefly and the Klingon Bird-of-Prey. X-wing already has the Millennium Falcon of course.

Here is my Firefly Epic Expansion Pack.

(I want to give a shout out to fellow X-wing Community member “Reynolds vs Solo”. While doing my research I found his post here:

... EDIT: Sorry, link is broken ...

I found lots of inspiration from his work and the follow-up suggestions. I even copied a few things almost completely word-for-word such as Malcolm Reynolds crew, the Full Burn and Cry Baby upgrades and his wonderful art for the Firefly maneuver dial).

The ship is the “Little **** Hero” 1:400 scale model. This is really close to the GR-75 scale which is perfect since Serenity is 82M long and the GR-75 is 90M long.

Balance is extremely difficult to achieve. I found myself focusing more on translating Firefly to X-Wing than achieving balance. I haven’t even play tested any of it yet. I’m certain some of this stuff is over or under powered and I’m open to suggestions but, as it will never see play outside of my home, I’m not very worried about it.

Thanks for looking. (This is my first post, I hope it works) - Ok, so it looks like I'm going to have to post one pic at a time. Sorry about that.

Edited for brevity - removed references to non-existent pics.

Oops. I'm going to have to figure out how to post the rest of my pics. Sorry about the tease.

EDIT: Ok, here are some more pics. I'll post the rest when I get home this evening.

Gozanti Cruiser and Tie Fighters pursuing a Firefly (for scale)

Inara's Shuttle with Inara and Wash pilots

Firefly Ship Cards: The base ship is called a Firefly Class Transport. I created 3 titles for Serenity, a 12 th Cavalry Gunboat and the IVS Cerberus but for ease of viewing I created pilot cards with the title changes built in.

I want this sooooo bad! It's amazing!

Love the "Soaring Leaf"! ;)

Wow, this is amazing! And Malcolm's card. **** I'd love to see that in X-wing haha

haha... this is great! And yes, I wish Malcolm's ability was in x-wing. Also, shouldn't one of the damage cards be "Broken Primary Buffer Panel?"

Where is the "Everything's shiny" card? "Once per combat phase you may take 2 stress instead of a face up damage card"

Thanks guys. It was a labor of love.

Did you catch the irony of the Soaring Leaf Maneuver? I thought that the requirement to discard Wash's crew card was appropriate to how the movie Serenity ended.

I saw the Malcolm ability suggested elsewhere and liked it so much I had to use it. Originally I had him granting 2 actions and Zoe allowing you to perform actions twice but I changed it up when I saw this - I think the quote nailed it for me.

Absolutely! This will be done.

That would be a perfect EPT. I did consider EPTs such as "I Aim to Misbehave" and "Big Gorram Heroes" but Epic/Huge ships don't get EPT slots.

Ah, I see. I have yet to acquire an epic ship (whether in a game of chance, sabacc, or legitimate purchase) so I'm not familiar with them.

Looks great! Good job on the upgrades, too.

I made a couple of revisions. I had to reword the magnetic grapples or Serenity could possibly collect multiple ships. I intended for it to only be able to grapple one ship at a time. I also changed one of the damage cards to Hepitude's idea.

And thirdly, even though Huge ships don't have EPT slots, we can still have Firefly inspired EPTs (I like IronOx's idea) but I need ideas for the others. (see EPT discussion in following posts)

Grammer, reposted glitchy image link.

Big **** Heroes could be a shared EPT (like Mindlink). Based on the name alone, I think I Aim to Misbehave would work as some kind of condition card.

Very creative, I love it!

Star Citizen's comment above triggers a thought: your EPT's there could all of them perhaps be Huge Ship Only Conditions. Linked perhaps to specific Crew combinations? Wash and Kaylee could perhaps make

Everything Shiny (expert piloting ability and expert engineering). Et cetera, et cetera.

Now that's a thought. Intriguing.

I was still thinking along more conventional lines ...

The cinematic theme behind "Big Gorram Heroes" was Mal and Zoe arriving just in the nick of time to save the day so I was brainstorming "Draw-Their-Fire" and Bigg's abilities like:

When another friendly ship at range 1 of your ship is defending, if the attacker is inside your firing arc the defender may add 1 die to their defense roll. (Or change a blank to a focus? Or reroll blanks?)

OR At the start of the combat phase you may reduce your agility by up to 2 (min. zero). If you do, you may select another friendly ship at range 1 of your ship and increase its agility by up to 2 until the end of the round.

For "I Aim to Misbehave" the cinematic theme was along the lines of -Don’t back down, bring the fight to the enemy- so I was brainstorming ideas like Fearlessness or Agent Kallus or something.

But your idea could lead to some very creative conditions usable on Serenity. Hmmm ... thinking ... thinking ............

Miss-typed something.

Oooh, I really like your "Big Gorram Heroes." That is perfect as an EPT for a Firefly's escort ships; I say keep it thus.

I feel like "I Aim to Misbehave" could do something Scummy and janky, maybe extending or blending some of the Huge Ship actions? I seem to have it in my head that Mal preferred trickery to gunplay, if he could manage it.

Here are some ideas for the Firefly inspired EPTs. I'm finding this to be kinda difficult. I like Everything's Shiny, Big Gorram Hero is pretty good I think but I Aim to Misbehave I'm not so sure about. I was trying to come up with something that would fit with not backing down and bringing the fight to the enemy. It's similar to Agent Kallus. Not being able to spend focus tokens while fighting a pilot with this EPT is like being intimidated by their intensity. Or something.

Corrected spelling.

Looks good.

Btw, Shiny is spelled without the "e."

I have a question about the maneuver dial for the Firefly Transport. I included a zero stop maneuver but I couldn't decide if I should grant the ship energy or not. I chose zero energy since it seems that most of the time a zero stop is a red maneuver. But I'm torn. I also considered giving it 2 energy (one off from a 1 forward). What do you all think?

So you're basicaly able to bolt a 2cm Flak 38 into your Starship? XD

Lol, yeah. Apparently they did exactly that in the movie Serenity after Book dies on Haven. That's where I got the idea.

(Sorry, I tried to post a picture from the movie but failed. If you google image search "Firefly Serenity cannon" you'll find a pic of Mal and Jayne mounting it on top of Serenity)

Here is the scene from the movie.

Here are the stats and pictures of the Cry Baby. According to the Firefly wiki, the cry baby was made from a Blue Sun coffee can. I wanted it to be small but I didn't want to make a custom sized token that would be hard to reproduce or substituted so I used the satellite token. I gave it an agility of 3 since it's so small it would be hard to hit but I only gave it a hull value of 1 since, if it is hit, it would be instantly vaporized.

I'm still thinking about the EPTs. I have come up with three variations for Big Gorram Hero. The one on the left was my first idea but it would be useless for a huge ship escort. The one on the right would definitely be helpful for huge and low agility ships but I'm not sure if I like the feel of it. I'm leaning toward the middle one. It's helpful to anyone and has the feel of heroes charging in. What do you all think?

(And I'm still not thrilled with "I Aim to Misbehave". Any thoughts there?)
