New Expansions In The Future?

By Mattr0polis, in Battlestar Galactica

So, does anyone else know if we'll see more expansions? There seems like a lot that could still be added to this game, but now with the show off the air interest in BSG seems to have died down a bit.

Still, there is a lot of awesome stuff from the show I'd love to see in this game: more characters, more cylon leaders, more cylon leader agendas, the cylon rebel baseship, the attack on the cylon colony, earth location card, etc.

Hopefully this awesome game lives on for a while yet. It seems popular enough that it might. And who knows maybe this 'Caprica' show will help keep interest alive.

By the way, is anyone else planning to watch Caprica which premieres this Friday? I don't see how it could be as interesting as BSG, but I'm willing to give it a chance I guess. Has anyone watched the Caprica DVD yet either? I might have to finally watch that before Friday.

Thanks for the reminder I'll have to set up my dvr to record it (and, unlike V, I might actually get around to watching this one).

I think there will be at least one more expansion for this game, even if it is just a "small" one, like the Arkham expansions. There are several more characters I think the game needs (it just won't be complete without Anders), and themes it can follow the Final Five and Daybreak are just two of them.

This game is still a successful seller, and we play it weekly still at our store (which I think in turn makes it a successful seller). If the game is good, it will outlast the property's tv run. Pegasus was still a big hit, even though BSG was off the air for 6 months. I think a new expansion will be just as successful, and we might see one next year at Gen Con.

It's quite good. It's also very different than BSG, tonally. I have a feeling that many fans of BSG won't watch many episodes of it, and it won't attract an audience who would like it.

I guess/hope that there will be two more "regular size" expansions, and if you think about it it makes perfect sense. [spoilerS AHEAD!!] The basic game covers season 1 of BSG up until the discovery of Kobol and the beginning of season 2. The Pegasus expansion covers season 2 - especially of course the arrival of the Pegasus - up until the discovery of New Caprica and the exodus from the planet which happened at the beginning of season 3. The next expansion could cover the events of season 3 - with a focus on the Final Five who will also name the expansion - and the last expansion (called "Daybreak") could cover season 4, the discovery of "frakked earth" and finally the battle for the Cylon Colony. A new additional game board for the renegade basestar from the Cylon civil war would also be a possibility.

Also there are a lot of characters that change significantly during the course of the series - Lee for example resigns and becomes a lawyer, Baltar becomes a cult leader - and that should be taken into account by releasing new versions of character cards.

And there are enough other motifs and concepts from the series to fill at least two more big boxes...

Looking at Daybreak, would that expansion really add to what BSG is know a psychological, bluffing game? Or would it change the dynamic into moe of a combat orientated scenario.

That's one of the reasons we are not big fans of New Caprica. It changes the game's dynamic, and in ways that (we find) totally help the humans. Although I see potential in the BSG game and "line," for lack of a better term, I almost wonder if a Daybreak game wouldn't just be a different playstyle fr the game, muck like the "A Storm of Swords" expansion is for the "A Game of Thrones" boardgame. Provided it was a good game, I would buy it. But I have to wonder if the paranoia that the game currently creates among the players would carry over into a game where pretty much everyone knows who the cylons are from the start.

I picture any possible Daybreak expansion/attack on the Cylon Colony as probably another objective card, where the early & mid game is normal with the hidden cylons & intrigue + sleeper phase & then at like 7 it goes to the attack on the Colony. Similar to how New Caprica objective is set up, so that you don't lose any of the stuff that makes the game fun.

And as far as making the game more combat oriented, it'd only be for this objective (& slightly for New Caprica), so it doesn't really change too much, and even then only for the end game. We can always still play the normal Kobol objective, & it'd be neat to have other objectives that shake up the normal ways of playing like that to keep the game interesting.

I think what we might see is the possibility of *every* player having an agenda card, so that it becomes less of a team game.

I'd like to see a few new Cylon Agendas so the leaders are a little less predictible (there were some neat ideas for shared and exclusive victories in one variant), and other ways to expand on the current gameplay.

Truth told, a lot of things from the series just really don't lend themselves to the style of gameplay that makes battlestar so much fun. The Battle of the Colony is a good example of this: there was no intrigue, no suspicion, just the two sides lining up and brawling it out.

I don't think there'll be more expansions. The tone of the series changes so rapidly in the course of the third season (i.e. the exodus from NC) that the current game mechanics do not cover it. So to make more expansions, you would have to very much change the overall game if you don't want to end up simply adding new characters and cards, which would be somewhat meager I find. .

I've thought about this for a bit. New expansions would be hard to add onto the current game. In order to expand the game it would involve making it longer at some point. So there would have to be more ways to get resources back. Otherwise it will just run people out so much faster and not be playable. I would like to see more agenda cards, as suggested. More characters might be another thing to do. A few more super crisis cards or quorum cards maybe. They can't really make the game longer, but could enhance the depth that there is. The easiest thing I can see to cover the last seasons is to simply make a seperate game.

Just curious, why do you believe that it would have to make the game longer? They could just make new objective cards like they did so far with the Kobol and New Caprica ones.

Also, both of your main points "no way to do it without making the game longer" and "only way to do it is make a separate game" are the EXACT same points brought up over and over on these boards right before Pegasus expansion was announced and that expansion turned out AWESOME! ("all this has happened before and all this will happen again") gui%C3%B1o.gif

Plus Pegasus added lots of really cool stuff to the game, and didn't add any extra time. They've had some of the best FFG game designers working on this game so far. I'm sure if there is another expansion it will be just as awesome and innovative without messing with the core game too much.

I think the challenge lies in expanding the game without overloading the complexity. Especailly in 5-7 player games, players get so few turns that there trying to win the game and also meet individual objectives might be much.

New characters are an obvious addition. I'd like to see some additional agendas for cylon leaders, too.

One easy way to add expansions is to modify the Crisis deck much like they did with adding the new caprica crisis decks. You could reintroduce the jump track once Galactica is back allow the sacrificing the pegasus ship to add resources and move on to a new desitnation and add a bit of the cylon civil war element to the cylon players side.

It may add some time to the game but you know what if you are going to buy and play with multiple expansions I bet you wont mind.

Other things that could be done is play around a bit more with pre and post sleeper phase crisis decks. I like the idea of individual agenda cards too.

One thing that Id like to see added to the game would be the ability to change the seating positions of the players in larger games.

I think all the current mechanics can be expanded and played with in new ways. Possibly all players have special pass/fail effect cards dealt at the beginning of the game that can be played only when a skill check is passed/failed for the effect on the card.

There are lots of neat ways to work within the current game structure.

Not to mention a final five mechanic. Maybe they could be dealt out as loyaty cards and are given the option to chose their side with different abilities depending on which side they go for, like looking at players' loyalty cards until they find a cylon or executing a character if they chose to side with the cylons. Alternatively, they have to join the opposite side they were originally on after the sleeper phase or be a separate faction.
