How are you planning on storing this game?

By KrisWall, in Runewars Miniatures Game

Storage is an ever present concern for these sorts of games. My goal is to be able to keep everything in one case, and then if the game grows too large, to add another case. I don't want this to ever become like my Warhammer 40k collection, where stuff is everywhere. I want it to be like X-Wing, where everything is in one giant tacklebox.

Here are some options I'm considering.

  1. Foam storage. Companies like Feldherr and Battlefoam make foam trays for various games. They have lots of generic options that would easily work for Runewars. The also tend to have custom options for games like X-Wing and Armada. Anyone think they'll be doing a custom option for Runewars? If so, this might be a good option. Below are just examples of what I'm talking about. Battlefoam is $$$, but nicer. Feldherr is probably the direction I'd go.
    1. Feldherr Option... https://www.feldherr.net/feldherr-hard-case-108-infantry-and-large-tanks/a-43700/
    2. Battlefoam Option... http://us.battlefoam.com/720-p-a-c-k-720-molle-standard-load-out-black/
  2. Giant Tackle Box. This is what I use for X-Wing. I love that everything is in one place, but I fear that the models will never fit in the little trays. This is good for X-Wing/Armada since the ships tend to be somewhat "flat". Otherwise, it's cheap and easily stored between gaming session.

  3. Other options... no ideas, but I'm sure our community is creative.

Again... the goal is to have EVERYTHING fit in one case that's easy to store and transport between games.

I'm going to miniature everything and use gem trays and such,

http://belchedfromthedepths.blogspot.com/2013/05/the-quest-for-perfect-miniatures.html

That's the guide I started with, but i'll post some of the stuff I do once I get my figs cuz i'm magnetizing the trays also

Not a bad idea. Expensive? Seems like a lot of work to modify for miniatures purposes.

i was going to magnetize the troops into the trays, then store completed trays into battlefoam trays (probably using the cardboard box for now)

unless i think of something better.

Having recently liquidated my stock of several other component heavy games, I have two big unfolding tackle boxes with Runewars written all over them.

Actually... they don't have it written all over them. BRB, writing Runewars all over my tackle boxes.

IKEA box that I use for other mini games. 3 1/2 sections, probably perfect to stack trays. I'll get one for trays and mini's, one for components and 2d terrain. 3 packs cost about $12

Tons of plano boxes (ie, plastic trays that have compartments that can be made bigger or smaller)

After I paint and varnish the pieces, they can sustain a fair bit of jostling around without scratching

Big flat tote with metal on bottom. Put magnets under movement trays and magnet models to trays. Easy clean up and take out.

Worst thing about foam is having to pull individual models out.

Five or 6 bucks a tray 11 cents a magnet and a tray holds roughly 70 minis

Because I don't like foam anymore, too inefficient...

I went the magnet route once, it was just too much a pain to deal with, I can't do it anymore.

i was going to magnetize the minis to the tray and foam (and remove) a tray at a time ready to go.

All of my games are in Feldherr foam. I can use the foam to store and sort models on the shelf and then use the Feldherr bags when I take the miniatures to the store or game space.

Maybe Feldherr will produce some Runewars foam inserts. I think I have an extra Citadel Miniatures figure case (take that GW!) that should be able to handle all the regular soldiers but I'll have to use something else for the hero and larger figures.

Will be waiting til Battlefoam makes some Rune Wars foam and then get that. Used them for Warmachien and Infinity and have not found a foam I like better.

Battle foam is always to me a superior choice, but also the more expensive.

Fedherr is the next natural choice after that. Good foam and several options here.

Also there are some other generic foams precut into small blocks to adapt anything. Storage with trays to me looks the best choice.

Anyway I'll use not anymore foams. I'll go to magnetize units and trays. Put in a shelve and use that https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/armycase/a-case-miniature-wargaming-carrying-display-case to move when needed.

Before magnetizing my minis I cut my own foam...it wasn't as pretty or clean looking at battle foam but the trays were good and they held more minis...and were a whole lot cheaper...

They make card pages specific to the upgrade card size that I use for X-Wing and IA in a little binder, works out great for transport and you can keep things nice and organized and easy to peruse and pick your upgrades.

My LGS has them at 30 cents a sheet, but this just an example of what they look like:

https://www.amazon.com/Upgrade-Display-Imperial-Assault-American/dp/B01CR8I2HU

I also use a Plano Deep storage 3700 for some IA stuff and the cards fit upright in there perfectly, but the card page is better imo. I use a 3700 standard to hold my IA models, painted, never had a problem with chipping.. but the trays add another element of storage. Having to take out models one at a time and plug them into the tray does add some work.

I may be a bit boring, but my house is usually the place people come to game, so the upper racks of my display case will hold all this. I'll probably be buying multiple, maybe even all 4 if the game is solid, armies since I'm usually the host.

Runewars will have to play nice with the Kingdom Death minis already in there. I'm not sure if that's a good idea.... if the 2 come to life at night I wouldn't put money against the kingdom death monsters...

How about this A-Case+ , thinking of backing it, comes with magnets too.

This looks like a cool case but I will say after magnetizing a bunch of my minis and talking to @Sorastro about the size of the pegs from the trays you will need to get much smaller magnets for runewars if you want the magnets to sit flush without have to drill holes in the bases. I'm planning on using 1/16" magnets and some green stuff to get them flush with the bottom of the base...The magnets in the KS would be perfect for traditional bases but they aren't going to work for Runewars without some drilling of the bases...

Search for K&M magnets in the states. amazing selection and great prices.

i was looking into Litko

they seem to have customized magnet solutions for miniature games. havent tried them yet but the prices seem really good.

As will I.

When they release official RW trays like they did for X-Wing, it will be nice to have space for templates, cards, etc. all in one area.

Plus I already own cardboard stacker boxes for my foam, and a bag to transport. All my minis, excluding some 15mm systems, are being transitioned to Battlefoam.
