Question before Pre-ordering the game

By Snugglebug, in Runewars Miniatures Game

Does anyone know if you can play just 1 faction?

My problem is that they are going to the same thing as with X-wing. You want to play 1 faction, but to have the best setups you have to buy a a ship form the other faction only to use 1 card. Anyone asked this at a showing of this game?

Cheers,

They were quite specific from the start that RuneWars would not be following the X-Wing upgrade route.

You will not have to buy expansions for factions you are not playing to get upgrades for the factions you are.

Okay, that sounds very reassuring (hopefully I spelled that right). Do you maybe have an article on that, or they said it to you when you got a demo?

Now to rally up some friends who want to play it to :P

I plan on splitting my core set (trading away a faction) when we get them. I believe the person wants the humans and I will take the undead, but I will verify when the time comes. My heart isn't set either way, I just know I want to only focus on a single faction from day 1 :)

You are correct.

Thanks a lot ??

This video relieves some pressure on me to not have to buy units for an army u won't field, I still might purchase 2 core sets for demo games and in case no one I know commits to buying this game

So from the sound of it, you won't have to collect a faction you don't play, but you will have to collect everything released for the army you do play in order to have a complete set of rules?

not rules a complete set of upgrade cards. of course you only need to buy the sets that have the upgrade cards you want. or the miniatures you want. i still think its a horrible distribution model but it probably works

Right, thanks. I consider the upgrade cards rules since they're just rules options applied to a model. I agree it's not great, though it is better than X-Wing at least. Still, that distribution model and the miniature quality makes this a pass for me unfortunately.

i dont have a single complaint about the miniature quality. and i know the rules will be top notch. so im in. i have been looking for a miniature game to fill the gap left when i quit GW years ago but nothing grabbed me until this.

I'm sure the rules will be good, I just don't want to buy units I don't need for access to rules, and for the price I was hoping it wouldn't be the soft board game quality miniatures. Shame though, because otherwise the game looks fun.

There are only 1 character and 3 units plus a Unit upgrade box. I have held a golem and they are hard plastic of good quality. 1 of each expansion box costs you 4x 18$ on several retailers websites and 75$ for the game which you split with a friend. Less than 100$ for every card in the game for atleast 8 months sounds like a steal to me.

i think "soft board game quality miniatures" might be an exaggeration. it is softer than traditional miniature plastic, but its not soft like most board game plastic. it holds the detail well and its not going to randomly lose shape on a hot day (dont leave it in the car though) come to think of it i dont think GW miniatures would fare well in a hot car either. maybe see the miniatures in person before you decide

So far the unboxing videos show a lot of bent pieces, they look like Descent miniatures. Which are good, but not really what I was hoping for. And your example is still buying models I may not want in order to get access to rules to use with models I do want, which is a no go.

If they are anything like IA figures (which is very likely) then the hot water/ice water trick will be fixable for any bent pieces. I can straighten any bent base or lightsaber with this method and have it remain straight afterward. I'm not worried about the bent pieces in this set.

The Minis are of a higher quality and harder plastic than the Descent pieces. General, spearmen, cavalry and a Golem Which unit do you not want? There are only 4. Please tell me which Large scale 40 plus miniature on average, Fantasy battle Game that cost about 120$ or less would you suggest then?

Uhh, I'm not making any suggestions as to what games people should play. I'm saying that I won't be buying into a game that requires you to buy models to get rules. As they expand the lineup that will mean wave after wave of models to maintain full access to upgrades, whether you want the model or not, so it's not a model that's desirable for me to support. That's my personal preference, I'm sorry if that's offensive for some reason.

It's not offensive, but it is firmly rooted in what seems to be raw preference unsupported by reason.

The alternatives sell you special rules in $80 hardback books that get phased out every year or so, so it seems like you're picking an odd sticking point to sour you on an entire game.

I love that they can easily update a weak unit just by making a few cards. Balance can be fixed at any time. Plus even my cheapest fantasy/kings of war armies cost 400$ plus.

I understand you perfectly. Been forced in a miniature game to get all the models for a faction and in some cases several copies just to get access to some cards is not a good situation, because more you pay, more access to some upgrades, maybe better combos you can get. And this is not fair, I want to be better than you because of my strategy, not because of my wallet.

In my FLGS where I'm going to rule the games I will allow all the players to play with proxies. I don't like that distribution model.

Be careful with this, when the game release more and more cards and more and more units, balancing is getting harder to get, X-Wing is an example, some cards don't work like it should be on old miniatures and now the developers has had to FAQ the rules and cards to fix the problem.
