Pattern Analyser and Debris

By sharrrp, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Okay, so this seems pretty obvious to me but want to make sure I'm not missing something I couldn't find any old topics on this point. Pattern analyser moves the check stress to after the perform action. When you fly through debris you receive a stress after the check stress step. So if I fly through debris with PA equipped I get to do an action before the debris stress hits right?

Just thought of this this morning mulling over list ideas in my head and it seems pretty clear in RAW but wanted to double check since I hadn't seen any one talk about this before.

Yes, that is correct

Actually I'm pretty sure you don’t get your action, PA has zero interaction with the stress you get from the debris. PA only cares about stress that you would receive from the colour of your manoeuvre.

As you yourself pointed out the stress you get from your manoeuvre and the stress you get from the debris are different.

So just like every other time you fly through a debris you get the stress token from the debris after finishing your move but before your action step.

Hmmm...I don't see why you wouldn't get your action. The debris stress is explicitly applied after the Check Stress step. Since PA moves your Execute Action step before Check Stress, the trigger for the debris Stress happens after you've executed an action.

My opening sentence might have been misconstrued as snarky, didn't mean it to be.

Indeed you are correct, I had always known to was a separate event but the fact that the stress is specifically placed after the check Pilot stress had eluded me.

Very well, carry on with the tricky combos OP.

If you happen to be stressed and perform a green move which overlaps debris then you can't perform an action. Either you activate PA and haven't cleared the stress yet (as Check Stress hasn't kicked in) or you don't activate PA clearing the stress then gaining another one before you can perform an action.

Edit: nevermind, spaceinvader corrected me below :)

If you read the Pattern Analyzer card it actually says:

When executing a maneuver, you may resolve the "Check Pilot Stress" step after the "Perform Action" step (instead of before that step).

This is not move your action to before check stress. So i don't think things that happen "after check stress" like debris actually change. By my understanding you cannot take your action because you get stressed first. You could clear debris stress if you did a green maneuver, but still no action :(

Corrected

from the wiki:

  1. Reveal Dial: Reveal the ship's dial and take the maneuver template that matches the chosen maneuver.
    • A stressed ship cannot execute red maneuvers. If a stressed ship reveals a red maneuver, the ship moves as if it were a white 2 forward instead.
      • (note: before the errata, this used to involve handing your dial to your opponent)
  2. Execute Maneuver: Resolve the following substeps in order:
    • Move Ship: Slide the maneuver template between the front guides (the two small bumps) of the ship's base so that it is flush against the base. Holding the template firmly in place, lift the ship and place it at the opposite end of the template, sliding the rear guides of the base into the opposite end of the template.
      • When a ship executes a maneuver, it is picked up from its starting position and placed in its final position. The full width of the ship's base is ignored except in its starting and final positions.
    • Check Pilot Stress: If the maneuver is red, assign one stress token to the ship; if the maneuver is green, remove one stress token from the ship.
    • Clean Up: Return the maneuver template to the pile of maneuver templates. Place the revealed dial outside the play area next to the ship's Ship card.
  3. Perform Action: The ship may perform one action. A stressed ship cannot perform actions, even free actions, during this step.

You think wrong.

Debris specifically says you get the stress after the check pilot step, and the check pilot step happens after your action if you use PA.

Unless there's an FAQ/erratum changing that, RAW disagrees with you.

Ok, I think I get what your saying @thespaceinvader: after check stress is still after check stress if that moves. The add stress can't stay where it was if check pilot stress moves.

Precisely so.
