A Song of Ice and Fire tabletop miniatures game

By DrCthulhu, in Runewars Miniatures Game

I don't know how many of you saw this, but apparently at Gama CMON revealed that they will be bringing ASoIaF Tabletop Miniatures game to kickstarter Q3 this year, targeting a march 2018 release. The base set is Starks vs Lannister and then expansion will come out monthly after that. Geek & Sundry has a brief preview here

Anyways, I imagine this will grab a lot of people's attention as it is based on a super popular IP. I'm still planning on sticking with Runewars, but I'm wondering how many people who have considered RW will now jump to ASOIAF instead...

Looks like a skirmish game to me, so I won't be collecting it, much as I love Martin's universe and will readily read everything he writes. So I'll be sticking with 9th Age and Runewars myself

Not skirmish at all. Completely rank and file. Still not interested, the concepts shown at GAMA were less than impressive and I think this is a much more interesting system

Kickstarter will be Q3 this year. So it's at least a year or more out from that date.

round base rank and file? are they on trays as well? Anything on the mechanics? All I saw was one poster about it.

Oh right, good catch. I edited the top post to provide more accurate information.

The preview says it scales from skirmish all the way up to massive armies, just depends on what you want to run.

Yes, they have trays very similar to the Runewars ones. It uses an alternating activation system and you can embed heroes in with the regular units for upgrades.

They are using a new material that prevents swords and spears from bending. Nice.

I feel so mehtastic about this game, the models don't really seem the be up to the detail level CMON typically focuses on, the mini for the mountain seems to have a fist on top of his helm. I feel like the armies will all just be different colored humans using more or less the same tactics...

I completely agree. ASOIAF is really pretty low-magic and I want a bit more fantasy in my fantasy minis battles.

not only low magic but if you put any of the magic elements in the game, they will have to be nerfed so hear from the source material for balancing or they will be STUPIDLY overpowered.

I guess I found the NOT part of CMON.

lol can we still vote on their site?

Retail release is for march 2018. So a year away. It's gotten my attention for sure. I love the novels.

I struggle to think of a fantasy universe I am *less* interested in a miniature game for than ASOIAF.

Oh, look, two blocks of vaguely pseudo European armored bros with different heraldry hitting eachother... again...

I have an opposite approach but similar conclusion. ASOFAI is about politics not battle, I highly doubt this game will capture the true essence of the series so I'm iffy at best on getting this game.

Don't get me wrong, I like the setting, and think it is great for all sorts of games that revolve around individual characters and political drama/intrigue.

Just not a miniature wargame.

Exactly

Actually, ASoIaF lends itself very well to a board-game that would represent in a smart and concise way the intrigues, political manoeuvring and army movements in Westeros ... wait, haven't FFG done exactly that already? One of my favourite board-games

To me, CMON is just a mere industrial cash machine. I loved Zombicide because it was the first game from them that I knew about, but I stopped after the core set because I saw the business model was too expansive for me. Plus, I don't find their rules being of a real interest TO ME (I insist, I know we are among intelligent persons but stressing on the fact that I'm expressing my own PoV is never too much), I find them light enough to be fun but not complex enough to be a real challenge (again, only played Zombicide core set). On the contrary, FFG does write quite complex and interesting rules that can give huge scales games in term of gameplay. See Descent II for example, it's a huge system and despite its flaws, it gives a lot of replay ability.

As per the theme, ASOIAF, I'm not a huge fan of it. to be honest, the novels didn't catch me so much and the TV show was...well too much for me starting from season 3. This kind of violence for violence ans sex for sex is not of my kind. I asked myself the same question with another piece of art (I don't deny ASOIAF is a piece of art, I just say I don't like it that much) : Berserk from Kentaro Miura which I love.

Some years ago I nearly sold my complete Berserk manga collection because its graphic violence was unbearable to me. But thanks to god, I didn't. Just hid it in by basement and just began to re-read it recently. (Don't play the video game, they just did great with the Golden Age thanks to the movies that helped them to scenarize pretty well but after the Eclipse...the game becomes insulting to a true fan of Berserk...). Berserk is violent, trash, I mean, who's the artist who create hundreds soldiers on a picture to kill them all on the next one ? It's **** insane... But in term of skeletons, there are some good fights against them and not speaking about the charismatic Dead knight with the rose.

ASOIAF and Berserk take the crude violence as a selling point or a key part of their purpose but to me, Game of Thrones has gone too far for me and I'm totally out of it. That said, I owe Game of Thrones the board game from FFG and love playing it. Don't misunderstand, the political plot is genius, but again...sex and violence... a bit is ok, but every five minutes...

Big fan of the novels, but a war game would be fairly mundane.

One recreating the battles between the First Men, the Children of the Forest, and the Others might have been interesting.

Then you could have your knights and blocks of humans, but also giant ice spiders, zombies, Giants, and so on.

Well Humans vs Humans doens't ave to be bad, they can still make diverse factions. Infinty was also humans vs humans in the beginning. I say if the released that while season 2 or 3 was running it would have been better, it still might do not to bad and i would hope so.
About the miniatures the showed, some don't look that good others are quite nice.
Will I back it, I don't know we will see, if I don't back it I will probably get the starter on release and in the meantime I will play with my Runewars starter.

I think they combat the Human vs. Human aspect of it by being able to play your favorite characters. I could see this being pretty fun, depending on timeline. I want to play the Lord of the Morning!

I can see this being a pretty big hit or miss depending on the person.

With that universe and setting behind it I can see this becoming a huge success. And with the demise of WFB there are probably a lot of people out there looking for a game to replace it.

Yeah, I'm hoping Runewars becomes that game :)
