Armada in Mixed Reality with HoloLens

Dang man, that's pretty cool.

Which one's Will? ;)

Huh? Could you possibly elaborate? Or is it an inside joke?

So so cool. Man I love the 3 dimensional maneuvering. Ships would need like hexagonal shield faces and firing arcs, but would remove so much of the annoyance of ramming because it would be way easier to avoid it.

I saw squadrons in one of your videos, are those animations similar to the ship firing?

This is the future I could only dream of as a child.

Bravo, sir. Bravo.

I looked at various possibilities for shield faces and firing arcs but went with adding a top and bottom shield/firing arc and then taking all the firing rules and angle calculations into 3 dimensions. Thus if you can trace a line between a central point in the model through one of the six firing arc faces to a shield on another ship (or all squadrons) then it is set as a possible target.

Most the squadron specific combat rules are implemented, range, engagement, etc. but firing animations are the same as for ships. The squadron movement UI is pretty different. though.

The more I see of this the more jealous I become. . . it is absolutely fantastic!

"Fire at Will".

How could I miss that???? That'd be something I'd say!!

I didn't know this kind of tech was out there! For the first time since I became an adult I'm looking forward to getting older, because when I'm older this type of stuff will be at your FLGS

I'm already envisioning this, but with a zoom option so everything can be to an accurate not sliding scale. And an SSD.

Well done!

3d movement will be broken lol :P

Well that being said it is too bad that Armada didn't come with height dials, but then again it is understandable.

But yeah about time hololense comes with something good.

depends on what values were set for the top and bottom facings. the battlefield(battlespace?) has evolved from 3*6 to a 3*6*3 though, so yes there are now exponential new ways of approach that ships can travel. @genereddick do you add more obstacles and stations to make full use of the extra space?

Wow! Most impressive.

At a 1:1 scale of physical model to virtual model the ships were a bit too small to work with. If you get too close, under a meter with HoloLens, it gets hard to focus your eyes. I tried various scales but I ended at a 2x scale which is what you see. However, this leads to a 6' x 6' x 12' play space, which is pushing what most rooms can easily contain. Squadrons are easy to lose, especially when they fly through your ceiling.

For obstacles I played around with both stationary and (slowly) moving obstacles but nothing fully implemented at this point.

This looks awesome! Wish I had a HoloLens... :(

Does this work with multiple players yet?

It's configured for multiple players, but I wasn't able to get it working with HoloLens and a computer running an emulator. At least not yet. If I manage to borrow another HoloLens and get it working I'll post a video of that. For now I just play both sides.

Ahahaha I lost it at "when they fly through your ceiling."

Until HoloLens comes up with a better version to go small scale, the current game sounds like something to play outside at night then!(would be quite funny for passers-by to spot a couple of people fiddling in the dark)

Who wants to organise a "Fiddling in dark nerd night"?? I'm all down

Couldn't see the game. Too distracted by beautiful downtown corner apartment.

If armada is taken to the 3D battle level, we can start to see more things like shooting at shield deflectors, bombing runs on bridges, and disabling engines in the future, this is just a dream coming true, keep up the good work!!!

WHAT SORT OF WITCHCRAFTERY IS THIS?!?!?!?!?!?!!!! Your world confuses and frightens me! Next thing you know, you'll be able to talk to people on wireless phones smaller than a deck of cards!!!

Seriously though, that's pretty **** cool.
