Wave 11: E-wing vs Tie Bomber

I just had a thought. With the new wave 11 stuff, you can have 5 scimitar bombers with LWF and Unguided Rockets. This essentially give you 5- PS 2 ships with (essentially) 3-3-6-0 stats and Focus, target lock, barrel roll actions for 100 points.

What I find immediately comparable to these scimitars is the naked Knave Squadron E-wing. You can field 3- PS 1 ships with 3-3-2-3 stats and focus, target lock, barrel roll and evade actions for 81 points.

There ya go, the Imps now have economically friendly E wings ;)

We all know the e-wing is overcosted, but the bomber DOES have several downsides to go along with it. The rockets require a focus to fire, so if you get stressed, bump, hit a rock, barrel roll, whatever you fall back to 2 attack dice. 3 agility, but not against 2-die attacks, where the e-wing will do better (and swarms could possibly come back with the new nerfs), and you can't spend your focus for defense or you again fall back to the 2 die primary. No shields, so you're way more vulnurable to crits even if you have 1 extra health.

Ya I agree with your points. 1 for 1 the E-wing is better. However, the bombers don't need to spend their focus on the attack, they can use it on defense. Unguided rockets just says you have to have one not spend it.

If a new ship came out and was balanced to be on par with generic E-wings, that's what you would call "DOA"

I was more pointing out that (outside of the bombers vs the ps1 ewings), most matches the bombers will be shooting last, so if you spend the focus on defense, you can't use it to attack later. And while you don't have to spend it on attack, if you odn't , you're shooting completely unmodified.


A) The dial of the Ewing is way way better than the dial of the bomber, with moves realy important for a jouster. And is something thay need to be taking account in the price of the ship.

B) AGI 3 and AGI 2 + lightweight frame is not the same. Not all the ship have 3 red dice, AGI 3 is 4 at range 3 or through obstacles (or with stealth device). In any normal game y see several shoot with +1AGI in both bands, in all of them AGI 3 is way better. And is something thay need to be taking account in the price of the ship.

C) Both system and droid slots are very powerfull slots that the E wing can equip, and solely this possibility has a cost above the modification itself. And is something thay need to be taking account in the price of the ship.

D) Unguided rockets are good, but not as good as a normal primary attack of 3 red dice. You don't need a focus, so you don't loose 1 red dice if stressed or blocked, or if you need to spend the focus in defensa; you can modify your attack with more things and have an extra red dice at range 1. And is something thay need to be taking account in the price of the ship.

D) The E wing is overcosted, no discussion at this. A bomber in a similar role doesn't need to be similary costed, the E wing needs a fix instead.

With all this in mind, it seems that the bomber is well costed considering the new missiles and LWF.

At best I think it could be assumed that that an fixed E wing should cost a little more than 20 points and a little less than 27 points. How much? I don't know, I'm not a game designer. Maybe a 1 pnt for each point? No idea.... but is a narrow gap actually.

You'd probably be better off comparing them to 5 Mangler Scyks.

I doubt that the new missiles would be used on the Avenger as much as the TLT would be. However it does give the TIE Punisher +1 attack at ranges 2-3 and doesn't require extra munitions. We might see Punishers use it more. As for K-wings, nope, PWT does perfectly for it.
