When do you give up on a list?

By Rolotamasi, in X-Wing

I drop a list when I feel it performs too randomly. Having fun is the most important part, but I am not looking for random in competetive play.

A good example was last November, when Regional season started, I was practicing with Norra/Wes/Biggs. I had good results, like I beat Dengaroo and triple Defenders in practice games, but in those games I also found out that the list really hinged on Biggs surviving long enough. If Biggs died too soon due to bad dice, Wes would evaporate soon after, and while Norra is a good engame ship. she is too static to take out an entire list on her own. So the results are too random, even though the list is so much fun to play. Because I realised this, I played a different list at the regional.

I tried a Jan Ors Horton Slam Nera Dantels Proton Torpedo list.

It did some good being able to take down a Fat Han and a Whisper in Wave 5. But later lists it just got blocked, picked off, and even destroyed before I can get half the torpedoes launched.

Now after EM has released I didn't go back and revisit it. TLT just proved to be too good of an option for horton to try and take torpedoes over that.

If it's a just for fun build usually 1 night (2-5 games). If it's a build I think will actually do well I'll play it until it doesn't feel like it performs as desired against decent opponents. That can be 6 months or 1 night, just depends.

Until it stops being fun.

If I got annihilated every game playing a list, but enjoyed playing it every time, I would keep playing, and keep tinkering to get it right.
