Jendon's Ability

By Teh HOBO, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

So is Jendon's ability a cost or a condition .

Cost: Jendon must 'spend' his attack against a ship or squadron to use his ability. Thus is he not attacking the ship/squad and can be countered?

Condition: To use his ability Jendon cannot then attack and cannot use his ability if he has attacked, whether or not he can is irrelevant.

Instead isn't a keyword for anything so its meaning is unclear. How does the stack work for using his ability? Declare attack->Don't->chose another squad->another squad attacks? Check that you can make an attack(not a step in anything or the rules btw)->Don't->chose another squad->another squad attacks? Can he use his ability if he moves during the squadron phase?

Now the only reason I bring this up is (different system I know) feedback array from X-Wing uses the same language but is a condition not a cost. Does anything in armada use this term "instead of attacking" and has it been ruled to be a condition or a cost?

Given the Explanation, Condition.

In Armada, you declare an attack before you even measure range to see if you can attack.

Ergo, you must be able to "make an attack", even with no-one in range, because you don't actually Check until you're already attacking.

WHich happens in one of two occasions each turn:

- When activated by a Ship in the Ship Phase, in which case, you can do so either Before or After Moving...

- When activating on your own in the Squadron Phase, in which case, it is in lieu of moving at all.

Because Relevant Rules:

Squadron Activation

Squadrons are activated during the Squadron Phase. Squadrons can also be activated during the Ship Phase when a ship resolves a O command.

• When a squadron is activated during the Squadron Phase, it can move or attack, but not both.

• When a squadron is activated by a O command, it can move and attack in any order.

• After a squadron activates, toggle its activation slider to track that it has activated.

• A squadron cannot activate if the color and icon of its activation slider do not match the initiative token.

Ergo, the only "Determinative" to being able to attack, is being Activated.... Not being in range can result in that attack being cancelled as you cannot gather dice appropriate for range... But you still get "An attack" by virtue of being activated subject to the above.

So, and if you'll forgive the rules lawyering as this is going around our group an I need to explain it to them, Jendon can use his ability even if he doesn't have a valid target for his "attack opportunity" as long as he has an opportunity to attack. So in the example of moving during the squadron phase, he cannot use his ability as he has no "attack opportunity" to give up? But if he is activated by a squadron command, he can then use hias ability even if there are no squads/ships at range 1 as he has an "opportunity"? Am I reading him right?

Absolutely no Worries.

You are Correct.

In the simplest terms, you give up your "Opportunity" to attack.

It has to work that way, because you don't know if you have a Valid attack until after you declare it anyway . :)

And if you're declaring an attack, - you're selecting a target and measuring range, and then, its too late to not attack, as you're attacking! :D

This is perfect, clear and concise, just what I needed. If anyone still views it as a cost after I tell them this(and I've tried to explain it every other way) then there's no helping them without a FAQ.
