yeah, Horvath's keynote kind stole the thunder here. i wonder if that was always the plan
Yea I'm unsurprised. What else could they have said today that wasn't already slated for April 19?
This is fine because of what we got yesterday.

True enough but that was gonna happen either way.
I get the sense that they wanted to show more but didn't get enough stuff ready on time for this event.

I don't get that sense at all. I got the sense that FFG didn't wanna spoil anything until April 19th. So they just showed the box and said a few things that doesn't give too much away before that date.

The reference I caught to it was when someone asked about clan-oriented products, he just said he couldn't comment until 4/19, which could mean anything or nothing.
I missed him calling them dynasty packs though, so it might have been brought up again elsewhere, when he felt could comment.

The lead up to the Scorpion Clan Coup involved Shoju manipulating that Crane and Lion into a large scale war, so they would both be pre-occupied when he attacked the capital.
It would also fit the core box sets the stage, first cycle launches story style they've used in other LCGs.

1) 4 card playset -> less card variety in the box and dinasty packs.
2) 2 card playset -> not this please. If I wanted to play HearthStone I'd stick to HearthStone
The two-card playset is what they used for their last two card games, and worries me a lot. It could be fun eventually, but I like decks to be more focused. Or maybe we are not going to use that many cards.
Edit: Or it could be that just 3 clans are included in the core set.
Steve Horvath's exact words were "2 cores will be required for competitive play" not that you will get a full play set. so at this point it could be two, three, or four card limit. also i think there are more than three clans in core as on steve's twitter he confirmed crane, dragon, and unicorn. https://twitter.com/SteveGHorvath/status/840398044751380480

Not to be nitpicky, but if he confirmed three clans, why would you automatically assume there are more than three?

good point there
! but in comparison to the other lines of lcgs under ffg, id hope there would be more than 3 clans in core
Hey-O,
Come on, people.
1. Powerless Pheonix on the box
2. Stuck-Up Crane on the box
3. Hiding-Behind-Masks Scorpion on the box
4. Living-Large Lion on the box
5. Riding-Scared Unicorn in Horvath's tweet
6. Drug-Taking Dragon in Horvath's tweet.
And you know the Boss Crabs are coming to the party.
Edited by terryfullerAlso,
I'm grateful for BGG and their exposure to the hobby, but that L5R presser today fell flatter than a pancake. The FFG representative used only adjectives to describe the game and didn't offer a single noun. I understand big-time press release in April, but he could have spoken with some certainty. And when the BGG moderator made an observation or asked a big-picture question, the FFG representative nervously laughed until the moderator moved on. I know fourteen-year-old, journalism students who could provide more clarity than that.

Unless the time skip whacks all all of the extant characters, we'd have nothing to go on. Random Scorpion Ninja from Imperial would have little to tell them from random Scorpion Ninja from Onyx.
That said...
That said, the fact they nixed a pic because it'd spoil what they're doing, in and of itself is a spoiler of what they're doing. For all intents and purposes, Onyx as we know it isn't coming, since they wouldn't care about spoiling if it was the Onyx we'd already had foreshadowed.

Would someone please confirm that they also heard Horvath say something like, "little fiddly bits," in the game box, which I take to mean that players will place resources on the table and damage markers on personalities. I would feel very satisfied if I lost a fight with a big-time personality but saw it limp back to my opponent's side of the table, hobbled by a stack of damage counters, sure to die in its next combat.

And what do you have to go by for this reasoning? It could have very well been an Onyx peep spoiled and then we would know the setting was starting in Onyx. Why wouldn't they care?
Just now, Sparks Duh said:And what do you have to go by for this reasoning? It could have very well been an Onyx peep spoiled and then we would know the setting was starting in Onyx. Why wouldn't they care?
Because Onyx is the default. Onyx is what is, or closest to be, expected. Why make a big deal about spoilers if it's picking up right where AEG left off?

As rare as it is, I sometimes agree with Sparks
