if it wasn't for the magicky swirl that does look to me like a scorpion on the front. Either that or a spider clan member in disguise (throws a bone spiderwards)

correction it definitely is a scorpion, the main picture is enlarged and lightened in the background and you can see the scorpion Mon clearly
... Now I feel like a dork for trying to squint and puzzle out the blurry, tiny mon in front.

Good catch!

Well... Kempy is the one who uploaded it to Youtube. I just shared his link! lol
Couple of points:
Given their Destiny Disaster (TM), hyping it up the wazoo 6 months before wide release gives them some time to estimate demand better, if stores start taking preorders, so they can either boost the initial production numbers or order a second wave of Cores, which can take around 6 months start-to-finish. So expect April 19 to be more than a card splash.
Secondly, LOTR is a 3-copy limit deck, but some cards were 2-of's in the Core. It's possible L5R will be the same limit, but you'll need 2 Cores for those 2-of's and just have a 4th copy of some cards floating around. Or, and this is highly unlikely given FFG's track record, there's a 2 different Core Sets which together complement each other and complete the playset, but each playable individually if you're only interested in certain factions.

FFG has moved away from this model of Core Sets (mixed 1x, 2x and 3x). Since Star Wars, the model is most cards are 1x and a few get more copies (that's for the cards you build with - coop game scenario cards come in playsets).

If I were a betting man, I'd guess Clan Wars (though other eras are certainly not out of the question yet.)
Or they just don't want to have any speculation about gameplay?
i don't think it means all personalities are spoilers, but if you're picking cards to hype your game, you pick the cool ones. horvath was pretty clear that they just decided at the last minute that wasn't how they wanted to go for this time, so they pulled that out and decided to wait for April 19th. i don't think this leans it one way or the other with regards to lore. theres spoilery personalities whatever era one thinks its likely to go into.
I suppose the old dinosaur that I am just hopes that all personalities would be spoilers, but I'm a sucker for nostalgia.
But you're right, now that I watched the video it sounds like they made the decision to not show the cards shortly before the announcement. Guess I'm just going to have to wait until April 19th.

Unless it was a time skip, in which case almost all the personalities would be new. So the fact that they're worried about spoiler personalities argues strongly against one.

Or you could see a much older version of a known character...
But I like the theory about a reboot. I personally think it'd be better for the story component of the game. They could tell the story again, but without the BS.
though this could be nothing I do wonder about the choice of front clans. To me crane, lion and Scorpion are the three cruxes of the clan wars (imo) whereas if they were thinking more wall then you would expect to see oni and crab etc etc. It was probably just a cool pic though. .
or I suppose the left, right and under hand favours

or any spider clan card, or an imperial card with an iweko. lots of ways to reference a timeskip.

I would associate them as the three most "central" clans to the L5R narrative, and they are the primary clans of the Scorpion Clan Coup storyline.
The lead up to the Scorpion Clan Coup involved Shoju manipulating that Crane and Lion into a large scale war, so they would both be pre-occupied when he attacked the capital.

Well.... ok then. Empty box it is then... ![]()
They said very clearly yesterday. April 19th is when information will start. Count yourselves lucky at least that much is known. Normally don't even know that.

Giving us plenty of time for rampant, irresponsible speculation! Woo-hoo!
