Joking aside. The thing about the fan of cards spoiler made me suspect a reboot. Even though I've been pretty sure the whole time it wouldn't be!

Why is that? The cards could have been characters from Onyx and that would have spoiled the story just as much...

Yep I considered that. But the only cool character left alive I reckon you'd want to be the marquee character would have been Kanpeki, and seeing as there doesn't seem to be Spider from launch I ruled him out.

Didn't think they'd be leading with Naleesh, Dairuko or Shikei.

Anybody recognized the artist of the box art?

First, pretty pretty artwork. :D

Second, symbolism on the cover? Left-Hand (Crane), Under-Hand (Scorpion) and Right-Hand (Lion) of the Emperor.

And Sideshow Phoenix :D

If it is Fu Leng I hope they keep his 80s Hair Metal look.

having had some time to ponder it, April 19 is pretty early to start hyping this thing. its 4 months before gencon, and thats just the pre-release of the game, not even wide availability. and they said it wasn't even just a sneak peak for fans thing, but a full on blitz. they must really wanna hype the crud out of this thing if they feel like they need 4 plus months of solid coverage.

I am hoping this means that player involvement is a big deal.

They mentioned that player involvement will happen, but differently from aeg and no details at all. But whatever it is, it needs hype and players.

I am hoping this means that they are going to hype the **** out of the game to get people on board from day 1 and really start strong with new players.

My knee-jerk reaction

FFG has gotten better at getting articles before release. I look back at the Netrunner release, which was announced in May, with very few articles before Gencon. With not a lot of real indepth articles about the game. They have been releasing fairly regular articles on Runewars since the beginning of the year. So, I would imagine you need to look at Runewars to know what to expect to see in the buildup to Gencon.

they were gonna show a fan of cards but they didn't want the speculation between now and the 19th. they know us well.

At first I wondered why they didn't just show a fan with a bunch of generic no-name personality cards, but now I realize this probably means all of the personalities will be characters used in the past. If I were a betting man, I'd guess Clan Wars (though other eras are certainly not out of the question yet.)

Or they just don't want to have any speculation about gameplay?

Looks like at least 2 boxes for me and probably another 2 so I can pass out decks for people. You know, lure them in with a sexy Scorpion seductress. There better be one in the starter!

ANY iconic L5R character artwork would IMMEDIATELY place the storyline.

Bayushi Shoju? Pre Clan Coup. Toturi the Black, Bayushi Kachiko, Hida Kisada, Mirumoto Hitomi, Isawa Tadaka? Clan War. Daigotsu Kanpeki? Onyx Era.

Based on the art they are showing us and what they said? They spent SERIOUS money on the visual design of this game, and they even call out "character design" in the presentation. That means they have an understanding of the Iconic Character visuals that help define the L5R experience. Unlike AGoT, where characters are based on literary descriptions, L5R Iconic Characters are closer to Star Wars movie characters. They have always been a visual representation, and are highly recognizable.

Well, unless art has taken a new direction, I think the one in the middle is not a Scorpion, but a Phoenix. Because that's more of a heavy dose of make-up than a mask. ;)

Still I could be wrong.

Oiran style hair pins have generally been limited to the Scorpion, and the interpretation of what counts as a mask has been flimsier than face paint before ...

(though there is the Embers Of War art to say otherwise)

The more I look at it, the more I think it is a Phoenix. She is holding those strips of paper that are used for benedictions and curses and such (ofuda). I realize it could be a Scorpion Shuggie, but not on the front of the box are they going to do that. I am confident in saying Crane Courtier, Phoenix Shugenja, Lion Bushi.

Two boxes per play set could mean:

1) 4 card playset -> less card variety in the box and dinasty packs.

2) 2 card playset -> not this please. If I wanted to play HearthStone I'd stick to HearthStone

The two-card playset is what they used for their last two card games, and worries me a lot. It could be fun eventually, but I like decks to be more focused. Or maybe we are not going to use that many cards.

Edit: Or it could be that just 3 clans are included in the core set.

Though I will admit, it sure looks like a Phoenix Shugenja on the side of the box with all that orange...

It looks a Soshi to me. Weren't they specialist in ward magic? I might be misrembering, tho.

Between Star Wars and Arkham Horror, they published Conquest and AGoT 2nd edition, both with a 3-copy limit. Also, Star Wars and Arkham Horror have significantly smaller deck sizes (30 for Arkham Horror and effectively 10 for Star Wars) than the 3-copy limit games.

Star Wars LCG doesn't have a 2-card playset limit, it works with the pod system, which is different. I was talking about Destiny.

typos

Yogo were the specialists on ward magic.

Some scorpions wore basically nothing but beads and called it a mask, or just make-up, as they just wanted it to be a reference and not an actual mask.

Well considering this and the picture on the side of the box looking like a phoenix, this could very well be a Scorpion in the middle of the box art. :)
