I enjoy the "mon," though I should say that it isn't a mon. It is clearly not meant to just be a symbol of a clan/house/family/group but is meant to be an art piece carved from some emerald stone. This would be why it is presented as bearing little contrast between figure and background. Both are comprised out of the same precious stone. It is a Dragon clan medallion or cameo that doesn't represent a simplified figure of a totem or symbol but an elaborate art piece based on the pattern of the classic mon. It can be read as very meta in that way and is similar to the Dragon clan simply having many repeating dragon motifs to their canonical decor.

I'd bet this is what appears in the faction card (stronghold equivalent) for the Dragon. Design-wise, it's very much like this:

And, for comparison purposes, this is how the simplified versions shows in a card denoting its alignment.

And the Dragon Clan has always wear green. Thanks Captain ! :)

I didn't say it didn't make sense. Although I would personally have preferred a more japanese version of the dragon. I just stated the fact the dragon looked a lot (if not totally) more chinese than japanese, which is a slight or a big (iconographic) change, depending on the eyes of the beholder.

That dragon has 3 toes - therefore it is more Japanese than Chinese. Had it 4 toes it would be kinda Korean and 5 would be Chinesish.

L5R Story Team Lead Katrina Ostrander

this is a very exciting piece of information. the mere existence of a story team lead, and her presence at this early AMA, should be taken as a very good sign that FFG understands the l5r is different from other games and that its story is as important as design

Is that new artwork!!!??? OMG :o

Well now I'm all riled up! This reminds me of being a little kid and urging time to move quicker so that Christmas would come. Hurry up and get here tomorrow!

Looks like it's same artis who painted this girl from banner. Faces or both girls look similar (even if under different angle).

That artwork is amazing oO

I'm so excited to see some Crane Beauty ! *-*

Well, if that's a young Hida O-Ushi, what does that say about the time frame of the story?

If the artwork is close to that quality throughout then I will be very happy ? 19th already and also looking forward to more l5r forum avatars at some point

Well, Steve said on twitter that this is not O-Ushi. So there goes my hopes for an early reveal from Steve. :P

It really does look very O-Ushi. I mean she's got that warhammer right there.

Maybe Hida Nichie?

Wow, these images...

I have to say, it might just be coincidence or me reading too much into it, but there is a definite Chinese aesthetic that's running in the Dragon "mon" and now this image. And I LOVE IT! Rokugan, lexically, has always been more Japanese than Chinese, but John Wick borrowed from a bunch of East Asian countries for L5R and it's nice to see that remaining and coming out in a strong aesthetic balance. The sculpted armor and scaled skirt are much more in the vein of Chinese warfare than Japan the same with the somewhat ostentatious carved Dragon which is more indicative of Chinese decorative arts than Japan.

/nerdy art rant

Lots to digest but I am excited with what has been revealed so far. Woot

If Phoenix plays even remotely like its stated on the product page I will be ecstatic!

At first I was iffy with the tokens, bidding, and whatnot, but honestly, two subsystems that are fairly well integrated into the honor/dishonor victory condition I think is fine and not overly complicated. Initial reaction = positive.

Excited to see all of this! Obviously a lot of changes that will take some time to get used to, but I was really encouraged by pretty much everything I saw... with one exception. I really don't like the idea of the Fate Tokens on characters killing off someone after X turns. I suppose I'm open to being proved wrong about that, but my first reaction is really, really negative to that system.

I'm stoked that they're keeping provinces, the two deck system, and honor/dishonor victories. A little bummed to see enlightenment go, but not distraught.

Just my first reactions right now - but I for one am very excited! :D:D

There's an interesting little bit which gives me some interesting ideas about Characters leaving play.

Glory subtracts from your dishonoured characters' stats, and makes you lose or gain honour when they leave play. Honour Rockets need to have their people around for as short a time as possible, making them easier to win conflicts against.
