LCG News and Previews

By cielago, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

EDIT: here's everything we know so far. Original post preserved below.

This post is intended to be a consolidated location for everything _confirmed_ about the upcoming lcg. rumors should be posted to new threads per usual, but if you've got new, sourced information, post it here and i'll update this post.

for the moment, since there's not much, i'm not going to bother trying to organize things. i'm just going to post what we know with sources.

Confirmed, with sources
* Advertising blitz, WITH PREVIEWS, starts April 19th (gama)
* the game is clan vs clan (as opposed to clans vs SLH as was speculated by some) 1
* dragon, crane and unicorn are playable decks in the game 1 , 2
* BOX ART! not final, but close. (gama)
* 2 core sets will be required for competitive play (gama)
* Nate French is the lead designer, along with Brad Andres and Erik Dahlman (gama)
* players will still be able to impact the storyline via tournaments (gama)
* there will be 8 koteis the first year (gama)
* RE: an rpg "We bought the title for more than just a card game." (gama)
* expansions will be called "Dynasty Packs", and it will follow FFGs now standard lcg release cycle (gama)
* designers are "just devilishly handsome" per designer Brad Andres

Misc

* Another piece of art from GAMA , courtesy of Kolat Informant:

(everything above noted with gama came from Steve Horvath's presentation at GAMA 2017, found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N15FvHGub6w)

High Confidence Inferences
* crab, lion, phoenix, scorpion will also be playable in the game - based on the appearance of their mons on this promo poster combined the appearances of phoenix, lion, crane and scorpion on the box art, with Steve Horvath's tweets about playing Dragon vs Crane

ORIGINAL POST

At GAMA we appear to be getting the first drips of concrete information about the game. rather than splashed in other threads, figured it was probably time for a thread to put all such information in. to the best of my knowledge, here's everything we know from GAMA so far:

per Steve Horvath, via someone on the l5r facebook group, Asmodee's second keynote of the day will be focused on FFG and thats at 5 PM PST today which will probably have a bit more info, and then there is a presentation at 10AM PST tomorrow where they will be showing off new games, including L5R. https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1743847/bggs-livestream-game-demo-schedule-gama-trade-show

Thank you ! I'm really hungry for news but reading through all the topics is quite time consuming.

Did they just say we'll need two core sets?

Correct.

2 core sets to be competitive, so it's either 2 cards to make a set or 4 cards to make a set.

Also they are still doing Koteis but they will "work differently" and there will only be 8 worldwide the first year.

I feel dense. 2 box starter means what exactly? 2 boxes with a different set of cards per box? Or do they just mean that you need two boxes of the same starter for "competitive" play?

same box. to get playsets of everything. pretty standard for ffg lcgs.

The box set will have the same cards in it. They usually just only include a portion of the total amount you can have (like if the limit is 4 of the same card, they might include only 2 or even 1 copy per core set to force you to buy multiples of the core set to have the maximum copies of everything).

So if you need 2 core sets to play it means you'll need 2 core sets to have the maximum amount of each card in the set available to play.

Makes sense now. Guess I'll be buying two playsets then!

biggest initial print print run of any lcg they've ever done

"it is something we have really big, ambitious plans for"

"We're gonna announce how the lore is gonna work on April 19th"

they were gonna show a fan of cards but they didn't want the speculation between now and the 19th. they know us well.

I'm just jazzed about what looks like an Isawa shugenja on the side of the box...

expansions will be called dynasty packs, and then he said something about individual clan packs i couldn't hear too well.

They specifically said they didn't because they realized one of the cards would show a character that was a "big spoiler" for where they were taking the story.

Bet you it was Toku.

It would have to be someone big that instantly places the era, so probably someone like Fu Leng or one of the other Kami, or Toturi or something.

Joking aside. The thing about the fan of cards spoiler made me suspect a reboot. Even though I've been pretty sure the whole time it wouldn't be!

sounds like we will only have to wait 36 days to find out
