Neoprene Mat (need advice)

By Hijodecain, in Runewars Miniatures Game

Hi all, after looking for neoprene mats I've find those as suitable for Runewars, I know those are bigger 6'x4' and not 6'x3', but anyway:

From UrbanMatz:

(those ones comes with a carry bag for free, if I understand the offer)

From DeepCutStudio:

Which one is your prefer of this list to play with Waiqar army?

I need also a icy-snowy mat of 3'x3' and those two places have good choices for this mat, do you know more places to check before to buy any of them?

Cheers,

David.

Actually I just realized their mats only ship to the US and Canada...The terrain pieces are what ship everywhere else...nevermind...There are plenty of companies making 6x3 mats though and if they are cheaper than 6x4 and you aren't playing WH40k or AoS go with those...I'll do some digging.

I didn't research enough

Check out F.A.T. mats online, they are by far the best quality I have used. Expensive, but worth it.

I have seen others in action, however, and there are indeed a lot of good companies out there now. But I'm pretty sure you can get a F.A.T. sent to your home country affordably enough.

Why not get a 6' x 4 ' ? that will fully cover most tables, and give you a good surface to place your tokens, unused dice and the like. It's only 6" extra on each side, and you can measure up for a proper game. Plus you may want to try on a 4' wide surface -- sometimes the larger games may be more suited for it. Not sure yet.

Regardless, my main point is that if you consider 6 x 4' options, you will have a much better selection in design.

Yup, I need EU as shipping option. Thanks your help! I've not find so many 6'x3' neoprene mats (all stars).

Does UrbanMatz ship to your country? I like the 6' x 4' badlands design. It has a bit of green in it, that would be helpful because forest terrain pieces won't look totally odd (like green in a desert). Different enough, however, so you won't get mixed up when fatigue hits the eyes.

The grass designs from the tabelwar above are stellar too, and there are several to choose from. I don't know what's up with their pictures, but the F.A.T. Mats look MUCH better in person.

I'm going to ask the guy that runs the kickstarter if he can add EU shipping, seems like that would be a good idea...But maybe it is just ridiculous pricing...

If you table fits a 6x4 you would lose any space with a 6x3 you would just have a properly measured play area and then an area off the mat for all you cards and dice. My point was that if you are thinking about getting a 6x4 but are only playing runewars it makes sense to look for a 6x3 mat instead. I would be surprised if the extra foot of play area would work for this game instead of negatively effecting play as the deployment and some scenarios are based around areas of a 6x3 board.

Is this game meant to be played on a 6x3 board?

Yes it is

I'm gonna look so awesome when my armies are running across space from Bespin to Starkiller base.

oh seriously...?

choose from a dozen awesome 4' x 6' designs and measure up 6" to deploy.

FAT Mats is a California knockoff of GameMatEU. They used to by in bulk, ship them into the states then resell them. Now they make their own in hous, just like FFG. Quality has gone down at FAT mats, IMO. GameMatEU, Mats by Marz and DeepCut are were my money has gone

Expact a mat from FFG before the end of the year as well.

Mats by Marz are very nice ... good reminder to the crowd here.

This might be a time where I actually buy an FFG mat.

Deep cuts mats are very good quality and the company is legit. I ordered a 3x6 custom mud fields mat and started basing my terrain around the colors in it and have not been disappointed in the least.

Thanks a lot because all your comments. You give me a lot of information.

But which one do you prefer of my list?

In gaming mats, I've always preferred neoprene if you can afford it and transport it in a carrying tube. Its heavier, but more durable and prevents the minis from falling over less if the table is bumped or you are playing in a high-rise with vibration. I would suggest the grasslands style as it is more neutral and will match with a lot of the core set terrain pieces and custom terrain pieces with flocking. Neoprene is also nice because you can easily put supports under it to make hills and slopes for other wargames. Keep in mind the play field for the Core is 3x3, and games will expand to 3x6, while most of the mats you listed are 4x6. You may need to think about either cutting down your mats or adding markers to show where the edge of the playing field is.

I am still thinking to make this my next terrain project, I think it will work great with the trays if the grass is short enough (and if not, still a new D&D mat):

Neoprene is a definite superior product. Mats from Mars have good textures, but the vinyl banner material is horrible. Wrinkles, creates, etc.
