Choices & Risks over Automatic Rewards vs. BlasterGhost (feat. NPE)

By Kumagoro, in X-Wing

And by the way, to everybody who keeps answering DO THIS, DO THAT to counter the BlasterGhost, that is NOT THE POINT, and I'm perfectly able to win those matchups, thank you very much (at what point did I say I have problems winning? And by the way, you can win games and still find the experience painful.)

The point is what FFG just did. Why didn't they just publish a DO THIS, DO THAT article about x7, Palp, Manaroo and Zuckuss? I'm pretty sure there were plenty of ways to beat those lists. In fact, I'm pretty sure they've been beaten a fair number of times at every level. But they didn't nerf those cards because they couldn't be beaten. They clearly stated the reasons, they're about a specific game philosophy they're pursuing. A number of those same reasons concern the BlasterGhost as well (and probably a few other things, but I'm talking about the BlasterGhost because I find it the most egregious example.)

It works at range 1 on an expensive 0 agility ship. I generally tricks you once and then never again if you learned your lesson.

Boy oh boy do I understand where you're coming from.

Don't run BlasterGhost, and if your friendly opponent shows up with it, politely ask them to fly something less NPE to your sensibilities. If you in fact run across it in a tournament, bear with it.

Unlike PalpAces, where you pretty much had to fly against it to learn how to beat it, because you were certainly going to run into it at a tournament.

Because the things they changed were warping the meta. How much of a NPE they were really wasn't the issue, the effect they had on the meta was.

The Ghostblaster doesn't warp the meta in the same way so they're not going to change it just because some people don't like it.

I see complaints about Negative Play Experience, but did you ever face this combo?

As a matter of fact, I did. I think I was flying Ketsu and 4 X Z-95s at the time. The Ghost did not last very long and I think I lost a Z-95 or two in the exchange. Well worth it for me.

If you fly 3 arc dodgers then granted, that can be a though match, but if the Ghost Owner ends up facing anything even remotely swarm related or with lots of hit points then they are the ones facing an uphill battle.

Keep in mind that yes, you can build a squadron with upgrades to target a very specific archtype (such as arc dogers), but in a tournament setting, that might mean one easy win, but 2 or 3 very hard (if not impossible) matches.

When the ghost has engine upgrade it moves faster than any other ship in the game.

The Shadowcaster (with engine) would like a word with you. As would the outrider with engine upgrade

Let's bring it to new extremes: Ketsu, PTL, engine upgrade, burnout slam. With a 5 straight, slam and boost, that's a good... 17 range of movement in one go!

FWIW I think ABAC and ABTLT aren't interesting combos and probably shouldn't exist; AC should probably be primary weapon only.

Fortunately it's only the Ghost that can do it, and FCS is probably better.

I played the auto damage turret ghost to a top 8 finish in the 2016 Atlanta regionals almost a year ago. Yes it catches ppl off guard, but its also super easy to see coming once you read the cards and take a minute to process everything. In those 8 games, 6 swiss and 2 cut, There where probably 4 where i was wishing i could shoot past range 1 with the turret, the other 4 where auto death to aces games vs ppl that didnt understand what was happening.

"git Gud" is a sh*tty response but a warranted one. There are massive blind spots on either side of the ghost that your little ace can hide, or the other 65ish points of your list can hide as well, ghosts and shuttle come in at around 70 points or more.

With a 4 dice primary FCS is definitly better. AC is a nice (as in good, not nice to play against) combo, but it just doesn't work with the ships profile well.

Haven't played against a Autoblaster version but:

Kanan: Rec Spec + Engine + TLT + Sabine + Cluster Bombs + Title

Ashoka: VI + Captured TIE + Title + Rey + Black Market Slicer Tools

Zeb: Nothing but title.

Yeah, there isn't really a blind spot. If you make it into range one, Ashoka boosts Kanan out. If you joust him, you get four dice primary and then a TLT. Next turn you get cluster bombed.

Fenn, Old Teroch and Manaroo went down in under 15 minutes. Teroch was TLT to death and Fenn took a four dice primary then a cluster. Manaroo got the TLT treatment.

Doesn't matter how many focus tokens you got, when the TLT is a constant 3 hits, you take damage.

When I see Ghost/Phantom + AccC + ABT, my immediate thought is, "Wow, I'm glad he nerfed his most powerful weapons."

Well, now we can add another AC + ABT combo to the list. Welcoming the Scurrg bombeerrrrrrrr!!!!

Well, the unique scurrg bomber, the Havoc, anyway.
