Oathsworn Cavalry Expansion Pack Preview

:LORE ALERT:

I love this! So Oathsworn Cavalry is basically a catch-all term for the cavalry units sworn into service in various areas of the Land of Steel (Terrinoth). I find this exciting because BattleLore had Riverwatch Riders and Citadel Lancers as the two Daqan cavalry units. This article makes it clear that those units are sworn to two of the free cities: Riverwatch and The Citadel. (Actually, I'm not 100% sure The Citadel is considered a free city. If not, it must be one of the baronies.)

Okay, now to finish reading the article.

IIRC, The Citadel is a place where the Council of Lords meets and is located within one of the Free Cities, which in turn are the capital cities of the baronies.

I like those defensive abilities. Flank guards are very interesting as it cancels one of the benefits of attacking you on the flank, precisely. It will be interesting with huge formations of spearmen or archers or any unit that you bet your enemy will try to surround to get rid of it.

Shield wall will also advantage bigger formations while Heraldic Surcoats will be a super buff for your unique or key units. It will be useful against Waiqar's and Ardus ability.

Just a thing : when they say " can be used with any army "n does it mean that I can use them in a waiqar army ?

thats the only thing that worries me I wish they released a waiqar preview showing the same 5 cards with a different card focused...

Yes, Cause they are neutral upgrades as you can see in the lower left corner as well as the grey background. However I'm assuming atm that these upgrades will be available to the waiqars players from other sources. Like the core set for example, it already contains shield wall,.... ect

yeah I'm hoping they didn't back pedal on the promise(ish) that they made saying that you were not going to have to buy outside of your faction

same here, if this is true I think a ton of people myself included will just outride cancel their preorder, luckly I have a month extra apperently cause I'm EU

So far it appears they'll make good on it, but I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't have to 'buy around' your faction to get the cards or even wait a while. For example, Flank Guard is a card that you might want on reanimate archers to make them more survivable. It'll be in the Oathsworn pack, but it could be that that, for Waiqar it only show up in the reanimate pack and not the reanimate archer pack. That means you'll have to wait for the reanimate pack to come out to get your hands on the upgrade (which appears to be release after the archers and oathsworn).

I obviously don't know if any of this will happen, but I could see there being short periods of time where a useful upgrade has yet to be released within a certain faction.

I think that will only happen with the first 2 waves since those contain figures from the core set, after that they should release cards for both factions in the same wave.

isn't it a bit redundant ? I mean... If I were them I would give faction upgrades in the expansion boxes instead of neutral upgrades. If they really want to sell neutral cards available for every single faction, why not selling them in a separate expansion pack (like a neutral upgrades deck) instead of polluting every expansion pack with neutral cards and not focusing on what could be upgraded unit per unit ? Ok, let's repeat : I buy a pack of oathsworn cavalry, but I get 5 neutral upgrade cards...cool, they'll maybe be available in a waiqar's unit pack (skeletons, archers, whatever). Why not designing 5 cards focused on the cavalry ? Or just faction focused cards being usable with any daqan unit. but maybe it would give less freedom in personalizing your upgraded units ? Don't know again... This is the same question as why we cannot use our custom avatars on these forums... or not ?

This could be avoided just bonding cards to the faction you buy. Changing the color or the symbol. They have not done this because there are going to be cross faction cards.

Maybe you get those on a future undead cavalry...

I see your point that they could just ALL be faction specific, but then you lose out on the benefits you get when you start buying a second army. For example because there are neutral cards when Uthuk comes out, I won't have to buy 3 copies of the Uthuk expansion that has shieldwall to get shield wall on my Uthuks. I'll already have it from my other factions. So the point, I think, is to have the upgrades available in all factions, but make them usable cross faction to help those who will collect more than 1 army. That doesn't hurt anyone as far as I can tell.

No one has talked about the two stars of this preview: Dispatch Runner and Moment of Inspiration? Moment of Inspiration alone makes the Cavalry or Carrion Lancers the go-to skirmish units. Both get 4 dice on an attack and have enough mobility to be quite a pain for the opponent. For only 20 or 25 points, it's hard to beat right now. Well, if they are caught by archers, it might be a different potential story.

From the looks of it, cards will only untap (or ready for non-MTG people) when a unit either rallies or uses an inspiration token.

Yeah 4th dice at iniative 3 and an extra armor. Could be a lethal turn with few loses.

Also a int3 dispatch runner into a spearblock that has rally and armor. Allows you'd spears to attack at 3 and still get armor to tank a return attack. And the rally gets rid of the stun.

Could conceivably rally with cav at 3 to get an inspiration so you might be able to do this every turn.

Did anyone else notice the release date listed as Q2?

Based on nothing at all, I was expecting them with the core game release. Now that the Core release is pushed back to April, I suppose that's Q2 now too, so maybe it's still possible they get released alongside the core game? Anyone have any better details on this?

They were originally marked as Q2 them coming out with the core was an unfounded assumption.

Yeah, they just announced those expansions a month or so ago. FFG always takes at least 4 months to release products after announcing them.

My guess is that the expansions will start coming out sometime in late June or sometime in July.

Dispatch Runner comes with the Reanimates Expansion too.

That pretty much confirms generic upgrades will be available to both sides by only buying their army's expansions.

They have been saying Q2 all along for the expacks, and late April is the release for EU not US. We should hopefully have it shipping at the end of March.

What I want to know is when will they be setting up preorders for expacks? Take my money! Probably not until core is close to release at least.

I'm going to hold out hope that the Expansions will all still launch at the same time and although everything isn't already marked "at the printer" all the models are at least or (I feel more reasonable) have already been produced and are just waiting for testing and printing of the upgrade cards. Maybe we will see these still in May or June? Though since the core was suppose to release in Q1 I suppose these hitting stores early Q3 would not be surprising.
