Road to legend - custom heroes

By backupsidekick, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I am about to start the road to legend playthrough, using custom heroes. I obviously can't pick them in the app so we will be using dummy heroes.

Does the app do anything like overlord cards that target heroes? I'm concerned that heroes abilities or their attributes being different may throw the game off if our character sheets aren't the same as the heroes we select as obviously they will be different. If there isn't anything that targets specific heroes based on their abilities or attributes then I see no conflict but would like to know ahead of time if it's worth it to make sure at least the attributes are the same/similar to our custom heroes.

As far as I know, the app does not target specific heroes. Sometimes specific classes are picked for travel events, but I have not seen heroes. I did some runs with conversion kit heroes picking dummy heroes in the app and never encountered any conflict. You should be fine.

The App does indeed sometimes pick heroes by name. There are certain travel and peril events, as well as some flavor text, that contains the names of chosen heroes. In this case you should take note, which of your custom heroes refers to which your chosen dummies.

That's true. However as far as know tha app does not refer to Hero abilities, Heroic feats or other details that could lead to problems if you simply replace the custom hero name with the dummy hero name. Just make sure to remember who is who.

I can't prove this, and it is only supposition based on experience playing, but I do think that when the app targets specific heroes, it is possibly done based on one or more of their attributes (Willpower, Strength, Knowledge, Awareness). If this is true, it is possible that one of your custom heroes may be targeted based upon the attributes of the dummy hero you select. Given this, and if I was doing this, I would try to pick a dummy hero that most closes matches my custom hero.

I can't rule it out but I think this is unlikely from what I have seen inside the app. I don't think this data is even available to the app.

Whenever a selection is done like this the text is shown and the user must perform the selection. Others are most likely random.

While I'm not 100% sure that each and every instance of hero selection is random, some of these events definitively are. I think Bruce is the expert in this regard, but I do not believe that the app does use skill values to determine which hero to choose. Choosing a random number from a pool of 1 to 4 is much easier than having all the values stored and choosing the hero based on an algorythm ;)

Here is a snippet from the Quest "Prisoner of Icespire" in the game files, which pretty much concludes that there are at least some random hero picks:

Quote

Q_TPOI_ RANDOM _1 A skeletal hand springs up from a ledge, grasping at the ankle of {0}! \n\nIf {0} is in a space with at least 1 black boarder along its edge, {0} tests [MGT].
UI_NO_TEST No Test
// ARG 0 = Hero name

Q_TPOI_ RANDOM _2 Streams of bitter wind spirals over the path, enveloping {0} in an icy gale. \n\n{0} tests [WIL]. If you fail, you are Immobilized.
// ARG 0 = Hero name

edit: I just realized this snippet is unintentionally amusing. I swear I picked it at random ;)

Ok, for those that helped out, I greatly appreciate it. As an update, we were able to find, not only attributes that match most of our characters nearly identically, but also of the same class (mage to mage, etc.). The custom heroes got thrashed pretty hard in the first quest of Kindred Fire, we won, but not before our "tank" (not really) died twice and our healer died once. The apothecary's potions were not helping with the mass majority of them only healing 1 damage each (terrible rolls).

I've already been told that some of these characters are probably OP, but they surely didn't feel like it as we were playing. War's feat is nerfed in RTL, Strife's feat with Blast is useless with a runemaster class, and it's nerfed in RTL, Fury's feat gets left behind with quests that keep moving away from the target space, and with no surge it is useless, Death never used his feat, never was a proper time to use. If you would like to run through the game with the Darksiders heroes, attached is my take on their characters. The Reaper Minis will be coming in sometime this week and I'll update with those minis painted.

Dude, you can't imagine how I love darksiders, mainly the second game. I feel depressed cause there is no sign of a darksiders III, and to tell the truth, I'd bet that there will be not.

I would have felt weird liking your comment about there not being a Darksiders 3, but I appreciate a fellow fan. I'm still holding out hope that there will be a 3rd, and most of the team that worked on Darksiders works for the new company that bought the rights to the game so there still hope. Been a huge fan since before the first one was released. Going through the HD remakes made me really want to play the horsemen in another game, this one fit pretty well.

I wouldn't give up on a Darksiders 3. THQ Nordic is actively using the ip, so it's not forgotten. I like the custom heroes to, nice work.
