Possible New Player

By the eigensheep, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Hi all,

I have some store credit built up at my FLGS, and I'm looking to possibly dive into IA. I'm really only interested in fielding a droid army, however (IG-88, Jawas, etc.). I'm also only particularly interested in the Skirmish game mode.

From what I can gather, the Core Set is a required purchase for the map tiles, and it would offer little to the playability of my desired list. I was hoping someone might be able to tell me exactly what I would need from the Core or what I conceivably use from it besides map tiles/tokens/dice (any cards or minis)?

I'd either be looking to buy just the necessities, maybe from ebay, or see if there is any resell value in the rebel/imperial minis from the Core.

I have zero experience with the game and there is a lot of information, so any help would be appreciated.

You can sell a lot of stuff from the core set, including stormtroopers, officers, guardsmen, and probe droids in particular.

I'm not sure what the market is for the uniques in the core set (Vader, Luke, and the rebel heroes).

I'll leave the question about what you actually need to others who play skirmish.

Rule book, tokens, dice, command cards, skirmish maps, map tiles, probe droids, deployment cards, attachment cards, doors. I'm probably missing a few things.

What would I possibly need from a second core set. Is it worth it to have duplicates of the cards/tiles/etc?

A second set of dice is nice, but you can buy that separately.

A second set is only really for the extra deployments, figures and command cards.

all buyable seperstely online if you look in the right places...

Not really, no. Unless you really need/want spares and backup components in case you misplace anything, everything but maybe a dozen specific Imperial deployment cards is 100% redundant. Even so, out of that dozen deployment cards, I struggle to think of what you'd need or even want to double up on as far as 'serious' skirmish play goes.

Maybe elite Stormtroopers, but even that's debatable after the recent rule and meta shakeup, and besides, you can also get them in the Stormtrooper Villain Pack. Or get a promo card of those, which is fairly abundant and cheap online.

That being said, I recommend you still get a (single) Core Set regardless of the faction/list you plan to play. Having all the core game components in one purchase rather than piecing it together online is worth it, plus, you owe it to yourself to give the campaign mode a spin at least once.

I've purchased 3 core sets and selected and kept the parts I wanted and sold off the rest. I purchased mine online though to save money (online sales, etc.) and was able to sell the extra components to make up the cost of the original purchase. There are items you would want to keep that you may not have thought about yet. The core set is fantastic. If you are looking to play an all droid army, you may have to wait a month to get the jawas, IG fix, BT-1 and trip0 as well as chopper. From the core set though, you'll want to keep the probe droids, they will fit into a droid army well and the elite probe droid is still an excellent addition to any army. If you really have no inclination to play the campaign, you may want to sell some of the stormtroopers. I'd still keep at least a set (you can buy additional elite cards from previous tournament kits for $3)

I think that if you play skirmish a bit, you'll find that you will want to play Imperial and Rebels and Mercs. All of the factions are unique to themselves and a blast to play.

Also for a droid army you are going to want all 3 of the new expansions coming out in the upcoming "droid" wave (possibly 2 jawas).

Jawas: let you field droids from other factions as part of a mercenary force, also comes with the "fix" card that appears to make IG-88 playable

Imperial Droid expansion: the astromech at least looks like a beast

Hera and Chopper: chopper looks like a fun little piece that could be surprisingly effective.

You are also going to want C3P0. And you will probably want Return to Hoth for assassin droids (but maybe try to find them online). Oh, and the IG-88 pack.

Ugnaughts could be a fun addition, too, with their Junk droids.

Curious what makes a new player so interested in a droid list? It's a fun list, to be sure (and about to get a whole lot better) but I find it surprising to be the main attraction for someone. Sounds interesting!

I think there should be a strong secondary market for the character figures in the Core Set. I would think a spare Vader and/or Luke could be fun to customize - like an all white redemption Vader.

No idea when the fascination started, but I always pick death robots when given a chance. I'm also in a weird place with SW. I love the universe and different types of characters (jedi, soldiers, smugglers, bounty hunters, creatures, etc.) but I don't really care for the majority of the big names.
