Elite Pilot Talent: Wingman

By Green Doo, in X-Wing

I'm interested if people have had any success with this one. I've plans to put this in my go-to list but I've literally never seen it in play and wonder why.

Thematically I like it alot and if stress control begin to make its way back, it can be worth of 2pts, yes?

Most of the issue of Wingman is that it takes up a very valuable EPT slot with something that is only ever sometimes useful.

Triggering at the start of the combat phase is less than ideal. If you're stressing from a red move, you've already lost your action by then, Wingman can only prevent you needing to green next turn. If stress comes from enemy ships, that usually happens during the combat phase (tactician, R3-A2, etc.) after Wingman's trigger; it can help against stress-stacking but otherwise doesn't help against losing an action because it doesn't kick in until after the perform action step in the next round.

Oh, and also: it's Range 1 only. Range 1 support abilities are seldom successful because it's so restricting.

Timing window is actually a really good point, leaving wingman use option pretty limited. Thinking about it, 2pts seems steep price to pay.

The one place I know it works is with EPTs that cause stress like PTL. Doesn't work well with Opprotunist due to timing. Otherwise everything above is true.

Wingman was one those early waves EPTs that were good when released but Weapons Race hurted this quite badly. I like this card in Epic to aid ships with bad dials.

Well, I need to try and see how Wingman works with ptl ace and if it is worth of its points.

My reasoning why I want to make it work is that too often ptl downgrade some amazing dials and force aces just go with green moves.

Are you thinking of a specific faction or build? The are usually better ways to shed stress, or keep the action economy largely intact. R2 and Unhinged Astromechs, Kanan, Attani Mindlink, Epsilon Leader, Pattern Analyser, Primed Thrusters...

Aside from PTL, one good factor of the timing window is Asajj. If you don't have initiative, Asajj will stress a target, then Wingman will remove the stress. Pretty limited application, there, though.

The real problem is that you can not equip 2 EPTs. A 2 pts good upgrade but it fills the slot. In 300 pts games this is good. In 100/6... Better options

I'm trying Fenn Rau with ptl and Teroch as his wingman. And yes I know, I know, there are better epts for Teroch such as Veteran Instincs but he is primarly there to help Fenn to stay aggressive.

Third pilot of the list is Zuckuss who have pretty red dial too :)

Manaroo w/Wingman+Inspiring Recruit.

Pair her with a Zuckuss carrier. After faqs, Wingman has improved

I used it in a TIE Rage swarm with Youngster, Epsilon Leader and 4 Black Squadron TIEs. Youngster takes Rage, Black Squadron TIEs all take Wingman. You've got to fly it really tightly, but if you chain your Wingmen right and keep Epsilon in formation, you can end up with only one ship with a single stress at the start of combat.

If you have a ship with Advanced Sensors or Pattern Analyzer(?), Wingman could help free their disl after they've already had an action.

People have tried A-wings with double EPT (title, PTL and Wingman)

The range 1 limit is its biggest issue. It's very useful, just a little too short range to be easily workable.

Just an update here. I played two games with Ptl Fenn Rau & Wingman Teroch. Both had autothrusters and title.

I'm actually positively suprised how they worked together. Fenn did really well with two actions and full dial and Teroch was able to hang in there with full dial and reposition moves.
