Saska Teft Is Gadget, Right?

By jscott991, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

As I was painting Saska Teft's mini, it all suddenly fell into place.

Goggles on her head. Wearing overalls. Long, reddish hair. Crazy inventions blowing up in her face.

She's based on Gadget from the Rescue Rangers!

Sorry just a random thought.

Its not exactly uncommon... Eg, Edward from Cowboy Bebop

True, Gadget herself is a trope.

But even after a day to think about it, the resemblance is pretty uncanny. :)

Probably about as much as Biv being Bishop from the X-Men. Or Davith being Space Nightwing.

I mean, you don't even have to leave the Star Wars universe to find these tropes repeating themselves. You don't even need to leave a single movie. Look at Rogue One, for instance.

Jyn Odan, ruffian turned rebel- Jyn Erso (same name even, surely coincidental)

Cassian Andor, rebel sniper- Mak

Baze Malbus, heavy weapons- Biv Bodhrik

Chirrut Imwe, spiritual warrior- Diala Paasil

K2SO, reprogrammed droid- M-HD

Saw Guerara, old commander- Gideon Argus

Orson Krennic, Imperial technologies officer- take your pick between Weiss and Sorin

Obviously, this isn't due to Rogue One basing its characters off of a relatively small tabletop game, nor is it Imperial Assault basing its heroes off of a movie that wouldn't come out for another few years. It's simply the fact that Imperial Assault features relatively blank slates as heroes with just enough characteristics to be interesting- with these characteristics being the building blocks of a lot of major tropes, many of which already have occurred in the series. For instance, I described Cassian and Mak as a "rebel sniper", and that's true enough and is almost all the information we have on Mak. For Cassian, though, I could have also used "rebel agent", "rebel officer", "pilot"... I very specifically projected Mak and Cassian's characters onto each other to create a parallel that I wanted.

Not to say that this isn't a cool find, I love finding parallels like this, and this is a really unique take on it! And who knows, it's entirely possible that someone at FFG is a huge fan of that cartoon and created an homage to that character in the form of Saska. That'd be pretty cool.

In my headcanon, Saska always seemed to have much more in common with Kaylee from Firefly. Like subtrendy said, she's a character trope.

Man, now I feel ashamed for never making that connection. Conclusion: I need to rewatch Firefly again.

I need to watch it in general. I've heard great things (obviously) but for some reason have never committed to just sitting down and watching it. Maybe this Saska connection could help motivate me. :P

Just watch out for the Terrifying Space Monkeys.

Yep, calling him that from now on. I knew he was reminding me of someone but I couldn't place it until I read this.

I don't know... if I recall, in the briefing for her side mission she says something a little un-Kaylee-like, not to mention I can't picture Kaylee roasting Starship Troopers with a Disruptor Rifle. Gadget on the other hand I could absolutely see that... :D

I did find what little characterization we got of Saska in her mission to contrast with what I pictured her to be like- which is actually really cool, I like being wrong in times like that.

Yeah, but my group and I usually like to play those kinds of contradictions for laughs. You'd think looking at Jyn that she and Han Solo would get along like peas in a pod. Yet when we played Fly Solo and Sorry About the Mess, the player treated him with complete contempt, actively refusing to give Han a Bacta Infusion that he really needed just because she decided that Jyn hated Han. They lost the mission, but it was so funny that I gave her the XP for good roleplaying.

That's pretty funny!

Though, to be fair, if she's any bit the scoundrel Han was, that'd be pretty much right on the money
