Vassal Freshman Spring 2017 Tournament

By Green Knight, in Star Wars: Armada

Hmm... judging by the number of replies to this thread, I'd said there is a lot of untapped vassal potential!!!

Perhaps vassal has an (undeserved) reputation for high learning curve?

I promise the current version is quite user-friendly - but you have to take the leap and actually try a game. And it IS going to slow at first. But you're going to get much faster very quickly.

Also, not everyone on vassal is über-experienced. Some are, sure, but there is a lot to be learned from having your ass handed to you by the World Camp (for example). So don't be afraid to pick up games with "strangers". Could be you learn a trick or two, learn to appreciate a new build, get a new angle on an objective or whatnot.

My first ever vassal game was against 3 flotillas 4 x mc30s piloted by ardaedhel. got my ass handed but! I can say i learned a lot , had fun and remember it in a positive light. Nothing to be afraid of guys.

Morat, Q and Tokra. You may be good on a tabletop, vassal is a different beast. On there you suck.

How much of Armada is about eyeing in? Yeah exactly

Well, this is the reason i sign up for the Freshman and didnt mess up with your streak in Vassal :P .

I tried the Armada tabletop simulator, but it was a little bit to much "hand work"
For a PC version i would love the boni from PC. And this mean not to have place everything by hand like you have to on a real table. And especially with a 3d engine that makes it hard to place everything.

I used the Battletech MegaMek for some time. And this one was quite nice. A good conversion from the board game to the PC.
If vassal is on the same level, it would be good.

And GK, you can sign me up for it. I only hope i find the time for it :)

Vassal armada is an EXACT replica for the tabletop game.

There only real difference (apart from no longer being a tabletop game - duh) is that vassal is PAINFULLY accurate. Measurements are exact down to 1/60th of an inch, which tends to make players pine for much longer about where to move or not. In a sense this favors smaller ships and fleets with high agility, since your Eyeball mk 1 suddenly got a lot more accurate guesstimating arcs and ranges. To a lesser extent it also favors squadron play for the same reasons.

My question was more how much you have to do for this replica.

The tabletop simulator is as well a perfect replica for the tabletop on the real table. Sadly to much. Becauce you have to place the maneuver tool by hand next to the ship and move the ship "by hand".
Doing this on the table is ok, but doing this on the PC is a pain. And a bit inaccurate.
You have to do way to much manually, so it takes way longer on the simulator.

But at least you can throw away the table :) .

Ah. On vassal pretty much everything has a degree of automation.

For moving a ship you press a key to deploy the maneuver tool next to the ship, push and click some more to get the yaw you want, hit another key to notch the tool, then keys to move along the tool.

No eyeballing or such involved.

I'm still up in the air. Just bought a new laptop to run Mass Effect: Andromeda so I may lose a good chunk of my life to that, so I didn't bother getting Vassal yet since it's coming tomorrow.

mass effect rules!

If anyone wants to run a practice game in vassal today (or the next, or next, or next) I am available pretty much all day each day this week. Just send me a pm and let me know when you are around!

Bad news for Y'all. My internet and tv are broken, though dont fear technician is coming out to fix it on the 24th....

Buggerations

Played a couple of hours of vassal last week, takes a bit of time to set up, but it's great. Just need to to work on saving a fleet and exporting it into a game to save on set up time...

Updated the first post with a remake of tutorial 1 - how to get it running.

Tutorial 2 already tells you how to set up and save your fleet.

Tutorial 3 (coming) shows the most important in-game commands and how to utilize them to actually play a game.

I think you are missing @anothermorat from the list of potentials. :)

Count me in!
