Vassal Freshman Spring 2017 Tournament

By Green Knight, in Star Wars: Armada

Is it possible to play without voice? I'd be interested

Forgive me, for I am a noob, but what is a vassal tournament

I would love to play, I tried to DL Vassal on my old laptop but never got it to work, I did get a new Laptop and would like to get it going and get some games in.

Yes. Most do, actually. It's just a tad bit faster with voice, but absolutely not a requirement.

Armada tournament, played online, using the Vassal application.

Sign me up. I'm in Ireland. (Which is GMT ) Normally available after 21:00 each night

Anybody looking to try Vassal for the first time, @comatose wrote up a good article on getting started with it. Biggs also has a good one.

There are also videos out there, but I can never seem to find them when I go looking...

I could never find these mystical vids so I never bothered getting into it. At least these guides will help.

I would even recommend those that sign up for the tournament to declare your skill/familiarity with using vassal and with that information pair up players in the first round as a new to vassal player vs a more experienced with vassal player with the intent that the experienced player would be able to guide and teach the newer player all of the shortcuts and key strokes that make using vassal a breeze.

Used it to play warmachine long long time ago in an intellectual property far away.

On the Facebook group. Plus Green Knight had one on YouTube.

Yea there was supposed to be 3 but I could never find them. I think other people had the same problem.

I would be interested in this! I've used Vassal twice now for games, and I like the concept of it!

This is the link I find everywhere, but it just takes me to the top of the FB group:

I'll look into it.

I regret using Facebook. I should have gone straight you YouTube. But then I deleted the original videos...and the software I used for the remake made the songs atrocious.

Sigh.

I would join, but I'd need A LO T of assistance not on Vassal, but on the game itself, since I got no miniatures and no one to play basically ;-; also my mic is broken so it would be even slower

I think that is the whole idea behind this :) when both parties are slow playing and learning as they go, you don't have one player moving lightning fast and the other dragging so no one gets upset.

I think at this point I know vassal well enough I don't qualify for the tournament, but I don't know it as well as those already spoken up to help tutor, so I will just say this is an awesome idea and hope that vassal catches on with some people, because I am always looking for games!

Can I be signed up as "uncertain" then? Not sure about time availability

I'd say that you're definitely not a vassal noob, but using @Ardaedhel criteria you're good to participate. If you want to.

I'd be interested. . . though while I know of Vassal, I have never used it yet, nor installed it (but that's only 'cause I don't know to use it, an annoying never-ending loop of nothingness), I also would be most likely unable to play except for Saturdays (though that may change), and don't have a mike either, so would prefer to avoid speech. . .

Also, does Swiss rounds mean if you lose one round you're out?

So. . . put me down as 'uncertain' for now, and perhaps if it turns out that the above issues can be bypassed or dealt with, I'll give it a go. . .

Swiss rounds are excellent. They are the best. Top notch. Everybody gets to play all rounds. With opponents on their own level. Its awesome.

On a more serious note: Swiss means that there first round is randomly paired. On the 2nd and 3rd round you get paired with a person that has the same (or close to) the number of points you do. So it doesn't matter if you lose the first round, as you can totally come back from it!

Sound good to me. So assuming my complete lack of knowledge of Vassal, and my availability being limited to Saturdays (almost anytime after 11 AM and before 8 PM, GMT) are of no, or little, hindrance, I'd be happy to participate. Just please do me the favor of explaining how I arrange games, and how I set up the battlefield and fleets (something that I got stuck on a year ago when I last tried it, and which caused me to uninstall the program).

Question: does anyone know of a good program for making screen captures with voice added? I can redo the tutorials and put the on youtube if I can get some decent software.

I used OBS Studio once. . . I'm not sure what you mean with voice added, but if you mean something like having a voice-over added later, after being recorded separately, then that is what I did, and it worked out fairly well. At least the video and sound were in decent quality, and if I could figure out how to use it, it can't be too hard. . .
