If B-wing/E2 got a shield upgrade would it be worth the cost?

By Marinealver, in X-Wing

In Epic I fly 4 B-wings armed with manglers and heavy lasers and FCS, in standards lately I fly Keyan, my biggest problem is the agility, against ships that can put up 3 or more dice mean the good ole' B-wing is out within a turn or two at least my ARC's survive that little bit longer.

A title or such to gain that evade without having to spend 4 points on E2 and C3PO would make them appear more.

B wing, Tie Punisher and G1A Starfighter are all in a bad place at the moment. All 3 have suffered from the increased shot power the game has developed. Funnily enough all 3 have a system slot.

System Upgrade. ? points (small base, 1 agility ship only)

When defending you may roll 1 extra defense die. You gain another system slot.

Now, for all the practice and knowing your ships, how many people run 3 Knave Squadrons?

~A friend of mine runs 3x Blackmoons with a surprising amount of success...

This is a really good observation. I do think your suggested Systems card is very boring, though (no offense). How about:

Overcharged Shielding, Systems, 1 point(?), Small ship only - If you have at least one shield, before suffering damage you may cancel all the attacker's attack dice and suffer one [hit] and one [crit] damage. You are considered to have been hit by the attack. You may equip another Systems card.

I like the effect, but I haven't considered any Systems combos that might break it. The "You are considered hit" part is probably not really necessary. There are times when it could make a difference, but they're pretty corner-case-ish.

Reinforced deflectors could help. If only they didn't make it large ship only. I guess they were afraid of phantoms but I don't know how.

I think it was more a view of the VCX-100's bulk helping to mitigate the damage. But Reinforced Deflectors are pretty terrible, not because of their use:cost ratio, but because the opportunity cost of losing the Systems slot for Reinforced Deflectors is particularly high.

(I personally take issue with the fact that Reinforced Deflectors are of more use against massive weapons than against TIE fighters, but that's just me.)

When mucking around with the System slot your idea has to pass the Corran Horn test.

FWIW: the H6 has 2 more health than the B-Wing. It is 2 points more than the B-Wing on a PS Adjusted cost basis. That shrinks to one point when you throw the E2 mod onto the B-Wing.

Granted, we don't know the dial of the H6 yet. But the pure numbers indicate that the B-Wing could stand to get a shield- or two!- as part of the mod.

Might I suggest hull instead of shields? With the amount of tricks that can bypass shields, the hull might afford better surviveability.

Yeah, I guess that is right. Corran with regen is bad enough, now give it that it reduces damage that passes 3 by 1 would make it worse. Corran Horn is like the Biggs of E-wing, his ability is the only reason that model is brought to the table.

I thought about that too. Maybe one of each?

Maybe.

I think the B wing will make a comeback via the MkII Title.

Apparently, the MkII saw use just prior to the New Order emerging fully and flew along side the T70, the updated A wing and eventually was modded into the transport ship you see Leia arrive in.

However, it also had two major upgrades listed:
R-9X Heavy Laser Cannon
Precision Laser Targeting Sub-System

So I suppose the MkII title could offer a discount on Cannon mounts and they also release a PLT System Upgrade which allows you to change up to two focus results when attacking to hits.

MkII would be cool, as with upgrades to the A-wing, although unless they give the B-wing a title card or the likes we're bound to see new models of the B (and A) unless they are the same as their predecessors in which we can utilise the existing models which is better for those of us that have invested in multiple ships (I have 4 B's and 3 A's).

If they do something similar to a TIE D could it be using the <torpedo> slot instead. How about this.

After performing an attack hits you may make immediately make an attack with a <torpedo> weapon. Add in Fire Control Systems and GC and you got yourself a Alpha Striker fighter.

I actually did win that regional but thanks for the compliment jeff :D.

Possibly. It would be interesting to see if the increased damage output over the lower cost cannons will make up for the limited nature of the shots.

Oh, how would you know?
