Their Fire Has Gone Out of the Universe (Alpha Strike)

By TheHumanHydra, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Time for another random list from me. I won't be able to build this for a long time, so don't feel obligated to give a lot of advice, unless you want to! This is just for fun.

Their Fire Has Gone Out of the Universe (Alpha Strike)

Darth Vader (29)

9 / 2 / 3 / 3 / 2

TIE/x1 (0)

Juke (2)

Advanced Targeting Computer (1)

Cluster Missiles (4)

Engine Upgrade (4)

(40)

The Inquisitor (25)

8 / 2 / 3 / 2 / 2

TIE/v1 (1)

Juke (2)

Cluster Missiles (4)

Autothrusters (2)

(34)

And

Captain Jonus (22)

6+2 / 2 / 2 / 6 / 0

Veteran Instincts (1)

Lightweight Frame (2)

(25)

Or

“Omega Leader” (21)

8 / 2 / 3 / 3 / 1

Swarm Leader (3)

(24)

(98 or 99)

This draws on ideas found elsewhere. The three ships approach in formation. Vader and the Inquisitor target lock and evade, then fire Cluster Missiles with Juke up. Jonus grants rerolls on all four rolls, or Omega Leader follows up with a Swarm Leader attack the defender can't modify against. Then Vader and the Inquisitor do Vader and Inquisitorial things; Jonus derps around and dies, while OL can try to repeat the Swarm Leader attack. Which do you think is better? How often do you think this strategy will succeed?
(Opponent's response: 'If you alpha strike me down, I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine. ...')

I think I stole this list a few months ago from someone here on the forums and have used it with some success casually.

Imperial PAIN (100)

"Pure Sabacc" (27) - TIE Striker

Swarm Leader (3), Adaptive Ailerons (0), Lightweight Frame (2)

Darth Vader (39) - TIE Advanced

Adaptability (0), Homing Missiles (5), TIE/x1 (0), Engine Upgrade (4), Advanced Targeting Computer (5)

The Inquisitor (34) - TIE Adv. Prototype Push The Limit (3), Proton Rockets (3), TIE/v1 (1), Autothrusters (2)

I took almost this exact list to the Yavin open. It had done well in practice games, but on the day I flew pretty poorly and dropped at 1-4.

My issues were actually using Swarm Leader. I rarely felt safe enough to take evades from Vader and Inquisitor. Would you mind me asking how you fly the list?

I do love it, most fun I've had when you hit something like a K Wing with everything Pure Sabacc has got!!

That's good to hear. Looks like that one is less synergy (Cluster Missiles - Juke - Swarm Leader) and more goodstuff. Pure Sabacc could sub in for OL in my list as well, but at the cost of Lightweight Frame. Which do you think is better, +2 dice, or +1 agility, opponent can't modify?

Wow, interesting! Did you post it anywhere here?

I'm guessing your question was directed at JSwindy - I'm interested to hear, too!

I didn't post it here. Got the idea from a list with two Juke X7 and Swarm Leader Sabacc, but I didn't want to fly defenders so I looked at other ships which can easily take a free evade. I think the key to this list is splitting your two evade providers, and using the evade for Swarm Leader from the ship least likely to take fire. I got a bit greedy at Yavin, and in two games stripped tokens from Inquisitor when he was vulnerable, only for him to get 1 shotted!

It is fun to fly if you take the approach that Swarm Leader is a bonus. The other advantage is that Pure Sabacc becomes simply too great a threat to leave so many opponents will over-commit to take him down which, leaves them vulnerable to being flanked.

The issue with a Swarm Leader Omega Leader is that you have no way to modify your four dice. You don't have Juke to knock their evades, you can't reliably get a focus every turn, and youlll never be spending your Target Lock. I'd go with Jonus, and just accept that he'll be exploding soon.

I would fly them all three separate and let my opponent commit to who he wanted to shoot at first. I would also try and set the 2 aces in places where maybe only one of his ships could shoot at them but not all of them and let him decide to shoot into Inq or Vader with evades or try and focus down sabac early to avoid his swarmleader shot. It is a list that has weaknesses and needs flown near perfectly, but is fun and fast. You pull off a vader HM, a Inq Procket and one good 4-5 dice shot from sabacc and you will feel good about yourself for a good hour or two, even if you lose. It's definitely a casual list though, not a meta breaker by any means.

I really like this idea but I would adjust Jonus slightly to the following:

25 Captain Jonus (22), Tie Shuttle (0), Adaptability (0), Fleet Officer (3)

Now Vader and Inky can get a free Focus token for their alpha strike and Jonus can continue to feed them Focus as long as he lives.

Thanks for all the input! The flying advice is particularly interesting. Also interesting that Jonus may be better; I somehow expected people to say OL (but I guess he's not in a very optimal form)! And I really should not have ignored Pure Sabacc in my brainstorming ...
