Just wondering what the functional change to Crack Shot means. When exactly do you have to decide to use it, after the defender has rolled his/her dice? Or before they rolled defense dice, or before the attack and defense dice have been rolled. Thanks.

You decide to use it after the defence dice have been rolled and modified, at the start of the Compare results step.
I.e. you can wait until the time it's most advantageous to use it, and use it then.
It's a clarification. It has not changed at all.

No, it was actually errated to state that it works at the start of Compare Results. Just not recently.
Isn't that how it's always been played? That's the only way I've ever seen it played.
Essentially, you can now only play it during the compare results step, whereas it used to be the only sensible time to play it.

"When attacking a ship inside your firing arc, at the start of the ‘Compare results’ step, you may discard this card to cancel 1 of the defender’s [evade] results.”
The bolded text was added.
Also, this is the first time I've noticed that Crack Shot only works in arc. I don't think I've equipped it on a turret before.

Crack Shot showed up first in Wave 7, released August 25th, 2015.
FAQ 3.2 (Sept. 4th, 2015) ruled that it had normal timing for a defense-modifying effect.
FAQ 3.2.1 (Sept. 17th, 2015) changed it to the Compare Results step.
