Who doesn't like a good conspiracy theory

By atkrull, in X-Wing

I am an avid x wing player as well as a game and comic book store owner. I have been more than a little concerned about the amount of x wing miniatures that have been out of stock lately. Upon looking at the "upcoming" page, noticed a large amount of ships that are "awaiting reprints", including the original core set. This doesn't make a lot of sense to me because with the merging of FFG and Asmodee, I would have thought that with the combined assets of these two companies (now one), they could keep our beloved game in stock without a large amount of downtime.

Enter the conspiracy: Is FFG holding back the reprinting of x wing miniatures because of a possible X Wing 2.0? With the new FAQ rewriting many of the "power" cards, and the lack of restock on many of the ships, could it be possible that they are intentionally holding back production until a new X Wing 2.0 rules and core set are completed? This would explain a huge lull in availability of some of the older ships because maybe their cards are going to get changed to fit the new system?

If so will we see a dramatic decline in the game because of the unavailability of acquiring older ships? It has been months since I have been able to get a k wing in my store. I just tried to restock my x wing shelves and noticed that half the ships I want or need are labeled "Restock Expected Soon" and according to the "Upcoming" page many of these ships are still awaiting "reprint" status.

It's just a conspiracy theory and nothing more, just thought this would be a nice topic change from the constant new FAQ chatter :)

FFG combines obstinate refusal to print more than they think they need with awful skill at predicting how much they need. In other words, they're terrible at supply. You should have seen them before the Asmodee buyout. You got people buying out shops' entire stock of Falcons to put them on eBay because they were that scarce.

And they easily sold for 50 bucks or more.

I came into the game around then and it was a long falconless time before I saw one in a store again

My local store pre-orders about five times the amount of FFG product that they need knowing they will get allocated down to what they wanted. As others have stated FFG is terrible at predicting how much of something will sell so they never produce enough stock. This is the reason I stopped buying Destiny. With no guarantee you will get what you want from a box you may never get it because FFG didn't produce enough.

If 2.0 was coming I don't see any reason why they would have overhauled the FAQ.

If they go to 2.0, I'll just drop out of store events and stick to playing 1.0.

That said, I think the point already made about the new FAQ points to more future waves. Perhaps they're just doing them a little slower now, having learned that we the players can find new and inventive ways to break things they create and are waiting to see what we do with wave 10 before they let out too much of wave 11 (lest they be forced to FAQ it before it even hits stores)

As others have stated, simple supply and demand issue. FFG isn't good a predicting or even observing demand and then changing supply to fit. Hopefully then will improve in the future.

Also there will be no 2.0, as others have also stated they wouldn't have spent all the time modifying cards and rules etc. only to change the format entirely. That would also be extremely risky as many players may drop out because of a unwillingness to adapt to a new version of the game especially after having a game play experience that generally has been the same (overall) for the last 5 years.

Continuing the conspiracy:

No news of wave XI, which is very rare given we have had wave X for a month now.

(Watch, I just jinxed the announcement to appear the day after this post. Maybe I wanted it to happen. Conspiraception!)

I've heard that Star Wars: Rebellion is also unavailable yet not even listed as awaiting reprint. Perhaps this conspiracy runs deeper and wider than we all imagined!

I say we panic.(!!!)

I know! I've been eagerly waiting to hear something about the next wave. The C-ROC held me over for a bit but with the cold realization that it probably wont be available for purchase until May... I need something else from FFG!!!

Maybe their losing their star wars licence soon.

I very seriously doubt that.

X-wing

Armada

Imperial Assault

Destiny

Star Wars: LCG

Role Play

Disney is making tons of money from all the licensed FFG products and are planning to make a movie every year. This lines up well with the development and tournament cycles of these various games. Both companies stand to gain a lot from one another and throwing all that away would be terrible business.

Oh I'm going to get attacked for even saying this but....... No way will we see X-Wing 2.0 before we see Star Trek Attack Wing 2.0, Attack Wing has more ships, factions, upgrades and broken combos then X-Wing will probably ever have. So panic if Attack Wing ever gets fixed.

Another thing to consider is FFG'S ability to reserve blocks of production time for both prints and reprints. I'm pretty sure that the molders and printers have more than just FFG's X-Wing in their production schedules. THIS maybe is the thing that's limiting how much of our great game can get reprinted in one cycle.

While I enjoy a good conspiracy like everyone else, I fear that this is a more mundane problem like production capacity and scheduling.

X Wing 2.0 is a game of Rebellion but you play a sub game of x wing whenever you have a space battle and a sub game of Imperial Assault whenever you have a ground battle confirmed?

2.0 is already in effect?

Wiz Kids released the rules in PDF format, taking into consideration ALL the new interactions, latest FAQ, Errata etc etc and are now, re-releasing older ships with alternative/better paint jobs and some even have revised points costs.

So what I am trying to say is . . . Perhaps today is a good day to die?

That's been rumored ever since Disney acquired the franchise, especially given how Hasbro does all of Disney's toy lines and Hasbro owns Wizards of the Coast. But as was said, FFG has done right by the license, both creatively and financially. I can't see Disney making a change just for the sake of making a change, and I certainly can't see FFG suddenly deciding they don't like money.

If anything, I have to believe Asmodee is implementing some new manufacturing/distributing policies and things are slowing down as they roll them out across their divisions.

Well then now I am paranoid....

If anything, you should see what's been happening with Star Wars: Destiny. Even the pre release kits are going to be uber limited.

I’m not familiar with games getting new versions. I see people talk about a 2.0 X-Wing but I don’t understand what exactly that means. New Rules? New ships? Will my old ships still be valid or would I have to buy all new stuff?
