Newcomer, some questions

By VAYASAN, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi all. I am brand new to FFG games having only just discovered Imperial Assault a month ago, I am furiously painting the IA figures and I absolutely love the look of the game (amazed ive never heard of these games before...ive been a wargamer).

During my travels on the IA forum I have also come to learn about Descent..which also looks amazing, so I have a few questions if possible-

1- Would it be madness to try cover Imperial Assault AND Descent as a newcomer?

2- Which is the easier game for VERY casual wife (who isnt forced into playing at all!!!).

3- If I do decide to plunge for Descent also...should I look at getting that App and playing co op with the aforementioned Wife rather than as the overlord and trying to destory her mercilessly?

Thanks for any input.

I think the Coop mode of Descent will definitely have a much higher chance to be fun for both of you if you both want to just play casually.

It's also a great way to learn the rules/get into the game and once you want to become more competitive, you can go to the "original" mode (Overlord vs Heroes).

One thing to consider is that FFG announced an app for IA in 2017.

I also once considered getting IA in addition to Descent, but decided against it, since both games are too similar. You can usually only play one of them, while the other gathers dust (unless you are super lucky to have multiple regular gaming groups, in which case I´'d have gone for it).

I feel like Descent is far more flushed out, fun for casual gaming night, and an easier game to 'hit the table' with the Wife.

I have IA as well, and really I only ever play it as a Skirmish game (which is its one really strong feature that is not available in Descent) with my son once in awhile. The wife and I play Descent 1-2 times a week, as a co-op game, and also have a full campaign going on weekends with friends every Friday night.

I'd say go for Descent partly because of Runewars Miniatures, which might give the option of using better figures if you so wish and want to build/paint them/ maybe customise the look and feel of the game a bit, could be some exciting options- also Road To Legend is awesome and has made Descent take off somewhat so hopefully we'll get some new Descent content soon.
