Operations Specialist; The new Palpatine for Rebels?

By Cloaker, in X-Wing

At least in terms of the effect as worded.....

PALP

"Once per round, before A friendly ship rolls dice, you may name a die result. After rolling, YOU must change 1 of YOUR dice results to the named result. That die result cannot be modified again."

By this wording---Palpatine can only change the dice result for his own ship right? Because if YOU and YOUR mean now A or ANY in this definition then

Operations Specialist

"After A friendly ship at Range 1-2 performs an attack that does not hit, YOU may assign 1 focus token to A friendly ship at Range 1-3 of the attacker."

Miranda has a focus token with Jan Ors crew. VCX Kanan has Operations Specialist on board and is within range 1-2. Miranda misses. Assigns focus token back to Kanan, who turns it into another focus or an evade.

Kanan just got scarier?

I think that has been pointed out as a mistake on Palps.

Sure hope so. Because it completely changes the dynamic of "you" and "your"

You're a friendly ship within range of yourself, and as OS doesn't specify another ship, this combo worked already before anyway. Another ship misses, you can assign any ship r1-3 of the attack a focus token. Then, Jan Ors can convert it to an evade.

Okay.... so trying to wrap my brain around this one then--- Mr. Kaato

"At the start of the Combat phase, you may remove 1 focus or evade token from another friendly ship at Range 1-2 and assign it to yourself."

Yourself now could be... who? Because the precedent in the FAQ is "After rolling, YOU must change 1 of YOUR dice results to the named result." And if that YOUR is now open to interpret another ship, then that focus or evade taken from light scyk generic could go to... a third ship, Manaroo? Who can now transfer it to Fenn Rau? in a four ship list with the lot of them?

Not trying to be difficult here, I promise! Just pointing out how this creates some quandaries.

RRG, pg 2:

'CARD INTERPRETATIONS
Many Ship card abilities use the word “you” to refer
to the corresponding ship. Upgrade and Damage
cards that use the word “you” refer to the ship to
which the card is assigned.'

Palpatine as currently written with today's errata can only modify the dice of the ship that he's riding in. The wording on Palpatine doesn't refine what "you" means in the game of X-Wing.

Right....ok. well that's just plain confusing.

But that Kanan build seems good!

What you described sounds like how Miranda with Jan Ors and Kanan with Operations Specialist would work together. If the ships are at range 1-2 of each other and one of them misses either of them (or a third ship within range 1-3 of the ship that missed) receives a focus token. Once per round Jan Ors can let any friendly ship within range 1-3 of the ship she's in receive an evade token when they would have received a focus token.

Cards that target "a friendly ship" will allow you to target yourself. Cards that target "another friendly ship" will not allow you to target yourself.
