Zelda: Breath of the Wild

i'd find it hard to walk that long without going "Ooo a shrine!" // "Ooo mob camp!" // "Ooo an obvious korok spot!" lol

incidentally theres 900 korok seeds you can collect. Im not even trying to get them all but i seem to get them without even really looking at a pretty fast rate anyway. Once you spot one kind of way they hide you tend to spot a lot of them. Random oddly out of place rock? Better pick it up....

The fanboys of this game DDoSd the website of Jim Sterling because he gave it a positive, not an outright praising review. I hate people sometimes. Please enjoy the game and punch people who indulge in such behaviour.

Problem with reviewing an open world game is its heavily opinionated if its any good.

For instance i usually hate them. I cant stand Skyrim/Oblivion/Borderlands because while yes its a wide, beautiful world its also filled with either vast empty voids or the same exact dang thing i just did 10 times in a row. BotW has repeat shrine mechanics but never repeat shrines in their entirety (puzzle-wise anyway, there are repeat battle ones which im fine with because i like fighting those things)

Those others i mentioned also always felt like i was in the same area but a different spot on the map. There was nothing to break the zones/biomes apart other than names, or at least it didnt feel like it. BotW has several several distinct areas that genuinely feel like a different world.

This game just happened to be awesome to me, but i have friends that still arent phased by it purely because of its vast open world design. I imagine that reviewer is the same way. And DDoS'ing for any reason is ridiculous, i really hope someone finds a reliable way to block that crap.

While he isn't keen on the open world craze, he said he enjoyed the game. He didn't think the weapon durability system added anything of value and was more of a nuissance, but overall the review was positive. But because it said 7/10 (what should reasonably be considered a good score) instead of 9/10 fanboys went mad. Thats what gets me, a review that is positive gets under so much fire, just because it isn't positive enough. (link: page is still pretty slow and under increased security, but I would say it is worth a read http://www.thejimquisition.com/the-legend-of-zelda-breath-of-the-wild-review/ don't think there are major spoilers in there if you have gone through maybe 10 hours of the game, avoid if you want to avoid any spoilers at all cost)

I think that this is a good game is without questions. I have heard of a great deal of people enjoying so much that it sold them completely on the Switch, which really is what Nintendo needed so it wouldn't go the way of the WiiU. If I ever feel the desire to get a Switch (a great product in my opinion) I want to play this game for sure. But good doesn't mean perfect and I value reviews that talk about issues, so I can personally see how much they bother me.

Clearly, no one remembers the great 8.8 controversy of Twilight Princess. You also have to remember just how twisted the game industry has bent the review scales. 7 to many is bad.

And the map is indeed massive. 16 times the size of Twilight Princess.

Isn't less than 9 seen as bad for most of the AAA publishers?

Having no Switch i haven't played Breath of the Wild yet but i have a Wii U and so the question is how abd are the framerate drops on the Wii U?

Not that bad. Though you do have to download a decently sized file before you can play. Sort of like for Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Visually the game looks basically the same on the Wii U as it does on the Switch. You will notice framerate dips when there is just a lot to render on the screen, but it isn't that bad at all. You only notice it a few times.

It is annoying. Its a little overdone in my opinion. I don't mind the mechanic, but some weapons don't even last an entire fight with some tougher enemies. I do like that it does make you think about what weapons you use. You don't just charge in with your best weapon/shield/bow all the time and not think about it. You save those for truly hard fights. To each their own. Its silly people get so worked up over differing opinions. There are people that actually don't like Star Wars. They are mad, but I don't lose sleep over it.

i cant think of a single video game that does weapon durability right.

Weapons when used and cared for properly can last generations. There are hundreds upon hundreds if not more of ancient Samurai swords that were passed down the bloodline. While medieval Europe didnt take as much pride in their sword as Japan they still had weapons last a surprisingly long time if cared for right. It was more common for it to shatter because of a novice or simply set aside because it was worn too much to hold a proper edge than actually breaking. Something tells me Link is no novice lol.

By that logic, no game should have a durability factor. But the few games that do that also get flak from time to time for some reason. Unless you made a game using some high tech VR stuff where proper sword technique was vital, i dont think you could ever make a game where the weapon CAN break, but odds are it wont if you dont f it up. For instance, parrying with a sword is generally not a good idea but if you must you need to use the flat side, if you use the edge you can destroy your sword right there with one battle.

Yes weapon/armour durability is just anyoing, it's just a chore. I remember in Diablo whenever i went back to town i visited the smith cliked repair all (without even really looking how damaged my stuff is) and moved on and when i got a warning in combat i just used another weapon or a town portal, so there was no oh i have to be careful with my weapon now nad choose me fights/use stealt, no just change it or get it repaired and that is just anyoing.

Weapon durability was just fine in Fire Emblem.

Does it make sense to upgrade armor early on, or just wait until you get better sets?

Armor in this game is collectable stuff. There isnt any sets that are strictly better versions of another, they all have their own reason for existing.

I havnt found enough fairies to upgrade more than twice. Upgrading twice is usually cheap so i just do it, but i hear upgrading completely is a fortune.

And from the video I've seen, in ways more than just material...

It looks like there is 4 fairy fountains in total, but they get exponentially more expensive to unlock each time. The first is only 100 rupees I believe, then 500, then 1,000, and for the last one its 10,000

The more you have unlocked the more it upgrades each time or something like that.

Ancient Cores are really hard to come by. Anybody got any ideas?

Cores are primarily found in chests, both regular and the large ones. But the regular ones CAN drop off the guardians, but before you get an ancient shield have fun farming them lol. I wanna say every 2-3 i kill i get a regular core from, and ive never seen a large core outside of a chest.

Or at least i am pretty sure they drop off the guardians....

You really don't need an ancient shield to bounce back the laser beam. I think it can be done with any shield and it doesn't damage it. Now, if you screw up and don't parry in time you and your shield will be blasted.

Any tricks in fighting the flying guardians? Its hard to bounce their lasers back since locking on to them is difficult. Should I just ancient arrow their butts?

Thats the thing, if you screw up the perfect block ONCE your shield is dead. I think the Hylian Shield is the only non-Ancient one that can tank it and not get ruined immediately. And you gotta do it 3 times to take out a mobile guardian, either flying or walking. Ancient shield can reflect it back without a perfect block, though it takes durability if you do that.

Flying ones i'd highly recommend just arrowing the eyeball. It oneshots them, i always seem to have issues reflecting because either A) for some reason the reflect misses or B) Z TARGET WILL YOU FOCUS ON THE FLYING **** ABOVE ME ALREADY!!??

i tend to avoid the flying ones if i can, since the arrows arent cheap.

I found a way to cheese the "do this puzzle without your stuff" island.

If you have Revali's blessing, you can reach the island with enough altitude that you can drop and throw a weapon to the ground before you land and lose your stuff... and the weapon you threw is still on the ground after your stuff is gone. Pretty sure you lose it when you beat the puzzle, so dont use anything you cant replace.

Yaknow my friend told me about that island and how insane it was because of the equipment thing. He said it took him several tries to beat it.

...i did it first try...

Apparently he never thought about sending the boulders down onto the giant's face LOL

I wandered onto the island very early in the game while I only had an extra heart or two. I quickly fled since I just felt it was too difficult for my skill level at the time. I need to go back and do it. I did watch a play through and it is possible to glide down onto the Hinox's chest and grab the shrine ball and run like hell. I do think it helps to do it when its raining so your are a bit more stealthy.

Man do I hate rain. Always raining when I need to reach something.

I am working on my second playthrough. "handicaps" include:

No fast travel

HUD off

"stay on the rails" such as they are.

Stealth gear only.

so far I've gone to twin peaks, Shieka village, Hataru, Mt Lanaryu, back to shieka, headed toward the visible shrines north of town, got directed to meet prince zora, and and currently fighting my way up to zora's domain.

No fast travel would be rough.

I've seen speed runs of the game in around the 40 minute mark, but most of them use Amiibos.
