Character removed from combat, stays kneeled or does it stand ?

By player1001095, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hi everyone !

Got a question. If an effect removes a character from a challenge there is no memory of that character having participated in that challenge. What does that mean exactly ? My friend and I were debating about whether standing that character or leaving it kneeled.

Any help ?

Thanks !

Mat

It means that he never participated in that challenge. For instance, if you remove the only Deadly character in a challenge you will not have to worry about that keyword during resolution.

If the character is standing when you remove him from the challenge he will be standing. If he is knelt when you remove him from the challenge he will be knelt. Removing a character from a challenge doesn't change its condition.

Well, let's make sure not to treat the standing/kneeling thing as a hard-and-fast rule; it's likely to confuse someone who doesn't read carefully.

The "no memory" thing is simply a way of saying that the removed character is not eligible for any effect that refers to "after this character participated in a challenge." For example, there is the attachment "Veteran Marauder" which lets you jump the attachment to a location and blank it after you win an unopposed challenge in which the attached character participated. Let's say I attack with the attached character and another character. You remove the character with the attachment, but still don't oppose the challenge. I could not use the attachment ability because even tough the character was an attacker for a little while, it was not participating when the challenge resolved.

As for standing a character that is removed from the challenge, you just have to remember that "removal" and "standing" are completely different things. Doing one does not necessarily make the other happen. If you remove a character, it does not automatically stand - and if you stand a character, it is not automatically removed. That's what the previous answer was getting at That said, there are a bunch of effects that specifically says it stands and removes a character, so don't get confused and think that "removal doesn't stand the character" means the standing part of a "stand and remove" effect would not work. It's just that in order for both to happen, the effect has to say so.

Oh, and just because someone always seems to ask, taking away an icon of a character that is already participating in a challenge neither stands the character nor removes it from the challenge.
